I got a new computer and redownloaded everything, games and rtps, but now I have a problem. With some games, everything's fine. With some games, the player (rgss/2/3/3a/whatever) stops responding at certain points in the game. With some games, the player opens but immediately stops responding. 'Tis confusing and irritating. Any ideas on what may be wrong?

One of the first things you should do when you get a new computer is update all of your drivers. They're outdated before the computer even makes it off the shelf. And don't rely on the computer manufacturer's (or Window's) updates to get the latest and greatest - actually check out the sites of the audio/video card manufacturers, and look for the latest drivers.

It's not actually a "new" computer, first of all, it's a couple years old, and most of the drivers are fine. I did run a check and found 23 outdated drivers. I'll update those and see if that helps.

lol!

So a new computer is out of date when it comes off the shelf, and this one is OLDER than a new computer. Doesn't that say it's probably even MORE out of date?

and most of the drivers are fine. I did run a check and found 23 outdated drivers.
I think that's called an oxymoron. If 23 are outdated, then "most of the drivers" are NOT fine

;)

Sorry for the misunderstanding. When I said "new" I meant "new to me". And it really isn't that old. Just old enough that 2011 driver updates weren't on it. And everything else is perfectly updated. It has been used before.

I checked the drivers with a website that may or may not be trustworthy and IT FOUND 23 outdated drivers. There were more than 130 drivers found by the website total. I manually checked and updated all the main drivers, which was MUCH less than 23 drivers. Only 3 or 4. Then I restarted my computer.

And I am still having the same problem.

Sorry - I'm out of ideas. The only time I've had programs that fail to open, it's been because something was missing (and it said what it was), or because of bad drivers.

mmm ... okay, ONE more idea. You say the RTPs are there, but maybe it's not finding them? What if you install the RTPs again, and then reinstall the games (though I imagine most of them are just download and extract). Maybe it's not finding resources?

Apart from that, I really am out of ideas.

Tried and nope.

I have to use the task manager to close the games, so I'm not completely sure WHY the player isn't responding, I just know that it isn't.

If it helps at all, I just played one game perfectly (rgss2a) and then opened another with the same player (rgss2a) which stopped responding immediately. It's always the same games that stop responding at the same points, but it gives no error message pop-ups, and won't start even if I let it sit for a few hours...

And you've tried reinstalling them? Have you downloaded again from the original site, or did you have them saved on a backup somewhere?

I really don't know what might be causing this. That it's the same games each time, and I assume the issue happens at the same point in the game each time, it SOUNDS like a resource issue.

I redownloaded from the original site.

I'm not saying it's not unable to find a resource, just that if it isn't, I'm not getting any message saying so. I can't say for sure if it's a resource issue or not. All the games worked fine on my old computer; same versions, same sites, etc.

Do you actually have the source for any of them? Or are they all encrypted?

If you had the source and could edit them, you could pop Mithran's crash debugger in there and see if it gives you any more info when the crashes occur. That'd let you know if it was a resource/game thing or a system thing.

I checked all the files that come in the downloads, and I have everything I should. I even transferred a folder from my old computer with a flash drive and tried that game again. Didn't work. It would appear that my computer doesn't like certain events or scripts or something.

I just read the entire topic, and it occured to me that you never said which windows version is installed on that computer, and what you choose as the compatibility setting for RM.

Please make sure that the compatibility is set to XP (unless you're running WinXP) and test again.

If you're running WinXP, did you install the latest service pack for it?

Windows XP SP3 on the old one, and Windows 7 on this one. I tried compatibility mode, but it doesn't help.

Which compatibility mode on Win7? the automatic settings of the compatibility assistant are usually wrong in my opinion, you're always better setting compatibility manually.

If we are to help someone, we need informations - because we don't sit at that computer, we can't see what really happens on it.

The info that the new computer uses a different windows version should have been told in the first post, because we would have started with a whole set of different options and question if we knew that.

I rather doubt that you tested every compatibility setting, because there are not only the 12 main compatibility modes, but several options for each.

Try XP (SP3) with "run as admin" first.

If that doesn't help, then please start giving more details on the problem, like

- bug happens in playtest or in regular game

- Game "name", downloaded from "link", stops randomly after X Minutes of Play or never starts

- Do you use the Steam or regular Version of Ace?

- screenshots of the error message(s)

Sorry I failed to mention the different Windows version. It didn't cross my mind.

Exactly what I tried first. I also tried using the different settings.

If that doesn't help, then please start giving more details on the problem, like

- Game "name", downloaded from "link", stops randomly after X Minutes of Play or never starts

- Do you use the Steam or regular Version of Ace?

- screenshots of the error message(s)
- regular game

- Ex. "In Search of Immortality" from the "Release Something Weekend" Forum; the "Blue Coral Games" logo shows, then fades out and the game stops working.

- I only have rtps, and it's not only Ace games, so I doubt that's relevant

- There are no error messages. However, if it helps, the task manager says the game is running, but hitting "end task" brings up a not responding message.

*sigh* I've just experienced this myself with some of our own older games, after going to a new computer. I tried to start up Aveyond last night, and though I could open it in the editor, I couldn't play it from the exe or from test play.

BECAUSE ... I didn't have the right RGSSxxxx.dll file.

See if you can find what dll files are required for each of the games, and make sure you've got them installed. Installing RPG Maker will not necessarily give you all the correct dll file versions that older games used.

THIS would stop the game from running at all. I doubt it would cause the game to run for a while and then shut down.

Shaz, would you recommend this be something people start packaging with their games so that others can ensure they have the correct ones to use when playing the game?

It's not a bad idea. You'd like to think anyone who has the RTP installed would have those files, but there are multiple versions of them (I've got RMXP projects that use RGSS102E.dll, RGSS103E.dll and RGSS104E.dll). The RTP probably only includes the latest and greatest. It's a pain to have to go that extra step though. But this is not the first time I've been caught out with this, and had to go hunting online for dll files.
