MV crashes on startup (Steam/Mac)

Hello!


I'm running OSX 10.9 and have previously had no issues running RMMV (last night included), but starting this morning it's begun crashing on startup. I have no problems with launching other steam apps, and it was still running fine after the last time steam updated, and after MV's own last update. I've tried many of the solutions from threads on the forum that have encountered similar issues in the past (rebooting, clearing steam cache, hard reinstalling of steam and MV, booting from its steam page and the .app directly in my files, and ensuring there isn't another instance already running in the background), but I haven't had any luck. Nothing to my knowledge has changed since yesterday, so I'm having trouble pinpointing the issue. To whoever can help me, thank you very much!

Programs aren't shutting down randomly, there usually is a cause - and if neither steam nor MV was updated, is there something else on the computer that was updated?


Can you for example tell if there was a MacOS update recently that might have changed something (although if that is the case, we should have other users report this as well, there are a good number of Mac users now)?


Or is there anything on the background programs that might have caused this? For example, an antivirus? (there are less virus alerts for Mac than for Windows, but enough that such programs should be considered for a Mac as well.

I also have MV for mac purchased through steam. I do experience the same issue and it can crash a couple times in a row, but I just restart steam and it works fine. It happens regularly but it's never been terminal.

Thanks so much for your quick response! There were no updates since yesterday; I have auto-updates turned off on everything (my OS, on steam, browser, etc), and it's been some time since I've done any of them, too. 


I also don't believe there were any background programs that could've, sadly; I'd thought along the same line when I tried the restart, and attempted booting it with no other programs open, but the same occurred. The only things that were running in the background were Dropbox and MagicPrefs (which is just a tool that adds more function to my mouse), both of which have run parallel to MV in the past; I also don't use an antivirus.

Anyways a crash like this can happen for a few reasons, did you install anything new, update a program, driver, or update the OS itself?


I'm not familiar with macintosh but I do know that it can be seriously picky and if you change something or remove something it was using previously, unlike windows it won't try to replace it with a similar driver or file and just throw a fit.(aka: program not launching)

Has nothing to do with the original problem, but is your project stored in the dropbox folder or somewhere else?


Just fishing and guessing as for possible causes, and the different way how MV handles the files increases the chance of project file damage if working directly on a cloudspace folder (no matter which cloud service you use, it's a technical restriction)

It isn't; I've tried also opening the program via several different projects of varying size/location, to see if it was just my that crashing it in trying to load. MV usually opens for me with a blank project by default anyway, but I haven't been ruling anything out, ahaha!

MV should load with the previous project unless you have the game file stored on an external HD and stuff like that. Or you removed the original game file altogether. I'm really starting to think something got moved and you probably did not even know you did it. I'm guilty of doing just this....  :stare:

It's done that since my original install, so I'm not sure! I did a hard reinstall today, preferences and all, so even if that was related, I don't know if it would be now <:o

Problem with Noobk's idea is that this happens on a mac - the programs there are self-contained archives, you can't move part of them out without sing several overrides. And if the OP did that he would have remembered that.


No idea at the moment, you'll have to wait until someone else with more knowledge about Macs comes along.

I'm no programmer but it keeps on pointing back to a "libobjc.A.dylib" and more than once to boot! Plus, its the very first file that it states after the exception error. Perhaps this may be the source of your crashing? can't say for sure but its worth looking into.

As for the libobjc.A.dylib, I ran a quick google search on it, and some skimming offers that it means it might be a crash caused by by the program's system library, or a bug in the framework? Unfortunately I don't know much outside of basic programming, so I wasn't sure what anything explained beyond those basic points meant. It's also possible I could be reading too far into it, or from the wrong sources. That was great spotting though, deathsia!

I had this issue on a PC for a couple weeks, but it was awhile ago...  It finally just started working on its own...  Maybe check the steam forums for this...

Is there a reason you are still using the old Mavericks? There has since been El Capitan and now the latest OS X is Sierra. These are free Mac OS X updates in the app store. My guess is that your Steam crash is related to Apple's lack of support for their abandoned operating systems. This is my assumption based on nothing, but ever since my PPC Panther had its last update in 2008, I've noticed a lack of support for the older operating systems.

I have a mid-2009 iMac that's already struggles on Mavericks, and reviews of newer versions are overwhelmingly bad for those in the same scenario, unfortunately! I've been wanting to upgrade, but I'm too spooked at the potential risk because I need this computer for work.


Despite RMMV's listing of compatability for 10.10 and above, I haven't had any previous issues, either.

My iMac is 2009 too. It's struggled since Snow Leopard went away, but I think things are generally better than Mavericks ever was. I could just be used to changes though.

I'll probably consider it as a last resort, if this keeps up much longer; I have other software that might benefit from it, too, if my machine holds out. I've kept trying to dig for solutions meantime, but haven't made any progress; I'll hold out at least until the next time Steam updates, see if that has any kind of relation. Trying not to rule anything out!

Had the same problem some weeks ago but i was able to fix it by switching down to version 1.3.0 instead of 1.3.3 (you can select it like you would select a beta on steam)

@McSundae There had been two times (for example when the koeran version was added if I remember correctly) when there was a bug in the Mac version due to an update, but in both cases it was fixed within days - you could have gone back to the newest version long ago.

I got MV to launch! I can't know for sure specifically what did it, though--due to extra circumstances that popped up, I gave in and upgraded my OS to 10.12, and then immediately when I launched Steam, it updated, so I have no way of knowing which thing did the trick; but I'm going to take a leap and say it was most likely the OS upgrade. Either way, I've got a solution! Hopefully because of all the methods I'd tried, I can help others with similar issues now, too.

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
Can someone recommend some fun story-heavy RPGs to me? Coming up with good gameplay is a nightmare! I was thinking of making some gameplay platforming-based, but that doesn't work well in RPG form*. I also was thinking of removing battles, but that would be too much like OneShot. I don't even know how to make good puzzles!
one bad plugin combo later and one of my followers is moonwalking off the screen on his own... I didn't even more yet on the new map lol.
