Hey guys - Sorry if youve answered alot of these questions lately with the new release but I wanted to get opinions on if, as a new-comer to the series, I should get MV or Ace...

Ive always played around with the idea of getting an RPG maker title but never pulled the trigger. Im now ready to get started but I want to know which one is right for me. I have seen some people saying that MV is missing older features such as a resourse manager which sounds like it would make things extremelty difficult...

Basically both games seem to be the same price(roughly) and I dont want to get the older one because of more ease of use only to have MV get updates adding these features in the next few months that completely justify getting it over Ace.

What do you guys think?

It's just missing a button - you can still add custom resources, so nothing has changed, except the access in Ace is simply easier than in MV.

Ace is pretty popular, and has around 4 years of support backing it, including community scripts and resources. MV was just released, and doesn't have such a huge library yet. Which one you choose is your choice.

Personally I always go for the latest version :)

MV, hands down. It's a better piece of software, with more potential to make games that reach a large audience, and built on a modern technology. MV is going places previous releases couldn't have dreamed of :)

Definitely MV, especially if you're going to be working on a game for a while. If you just want to play around and learn the software, you might be able to get Ace for cheap in a steam sale, and then buy MV later -- but it'll be a pain to port your game over to it because of the different resolution/scripts.

If price doesn't matter, just get MV now.

Awesome. I appreciate the feedback. I was leaning towards MV, I just wanted to make sure it wasnt missing a lot of features etc. I had heard some bad things but also that stuff was being blown alittle out of proportion.

Ill go with MV :)

If you want to develop for mobile (andriod/iOS) then you need MV, full stop.

If you are certain that all you want to develop for is PC, then you have a choice. Ace has a lot more assets and resources available for it, and a ton of scripts already written by the community over the years to change the way the engine works. If you know (or are willing to learn) Ruby, there's a lot you can do to change the engine.

MV is the new kid on the block. There are still some bugs that need shaking out, but it's a brand new engine core and loads of things will be coming for it. To make it a bit more confusing for you, if you own Ace, you can buy resource packs made for Ace (which include music, tilesets, battlers, etc...) and resize them and use them in MV.

For me, the market for mobile games is so much larger than the market for PC games that there isn't much of a choice. If all I wanted to do was create a game for PC though, I might have stuck with Ace for a while longer, at least until MV 'matures' a bit.

As an Ace and MV user, I'll have to say MV for its new features. But unfortunately, MV requires a higher PC spec than Ace for it to run smoothly. Not to mention it still have some bugs and less community resources compared with Ace. In terms of compatibility (PC only) I'll vote for Ace.

Thanks for all the feedback, guys. Ill definitly have to frequent this forum as I learn, as the community seems very helpful. :)

Two more questions:

1) Is MV as user friendly as advertised? Ive worked with HTML5, CSS, Action Script and alittle Java script but Im very novice at all of them. Im a graphic designer so I am pretty spoiled by WYSIWYG's haha. Is the interface pretty intuitive?

2) Can you edit the game's existing assets? Like art on the character panels, the UI etc? I would love to design my own UI.

Thanks again!

Yes, you don't need any coding skills at all to get started. A little bit of experience in the logic behind programming and events  is useful (and it sounds like you'll be fine even if you only know very very basic actionscript). I made a video where I made a fetchquest in 40 minutes here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQq6p3-8elY

As a long time customer, this is the best launch the RPG Maker team has ever had, and I'm looking forward to what comes with updates.

Having tried the VX ace (light) and MV I would say go for MV it has multi platform support really cool graphics and a much nicer UI but then Ace has lodes of really nice content packs where as MV (being new) only have 2 that were released on release and free if you pre ordered

If you want access to a rich library of resources and an established community go VX. To me MV has a looong waayy to go before it is really useful to a casual user.

He mad, but he cute :kaopride:

Our latest feature is an interview with... me?!

People4_2 (Capelet off and on) added!

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
