This has been going on a while now ever since I shifted to my new laptop.
If I move an asset (tilesets, facesets, music etc) the game freaks out that it cant find it and will refuse to play the test game.

It's looking for this

which has since been moved from the incorrect tileset folder and moved to characters so it can act as a door and given its appropriate name tag
However the game can't find it anymore despite the fact that this item in particular doesn't exist anywhere in the game's map etc yet.
Removing it from the folder gives the same error message as above as well as putting it back into the tilset file it still can't find it.

I've had this issue time and time again and the only way I've found around it is to start from scratch with a new project.
However I can't do that this time as I'm too far along on this one to just start over.

If anyone else has this issue and knows how to fix it please let me know asap. I feel my project is going to be cancelled if I can't fix it, I can't work with something that doesn't allow me to edit its assets :(

Side note: Sorry if this thread is in the wrong place, I wasn't sure where to put it.

If there is an error message of "failed to load", then the game project still contains a reference to that file somewhere. So your assumption
despite the fact that this item in particular doesn't exist anywhere in the game's map
is simply wrong - it still is used somewhere in the project, or the game would have no way to know the filename itself.

And you need to find the place in the engine where it still is used. That is the only way to solve this error message.

One suggestion: use a multifile text editor (for example textpad) to open all json files of the project at the same time and then search for the filename of the error message through all files. This way you'll find the places where it still is referenced, then go into the project to that specific place and look for the reference again there (don't edit the json files themselves, you need to use the editor to remove the missed references or you'll get into other bugs).

After some fussing it turns out the file in question didn't enjoy being renamed.
having named it back to its original name the game no play tests as normal.
However, this item isn't used in the game at all and only exists within its file. Its brand new and never used before which is weird... but hey at least its fixed

Issue resolved.

It's not that you're renaming or moving it. It's that where you used it, you said to use it as a tileset image, and not as a character image, so it's looking for it in the tilesets folder, and you moved it to the characters folder. Even if it's the same name, you've still got to go back to where you used it and tell it that it's now set up as a character image and not a tileset image anymore.

The naming is also important. If you change the name or even change the case of the name (call it MyHero instead of Myhero), it's going to cause a problem (might work on Windows but it won't on any other platform).

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
