[MV] Turning map "display names" off and on.

Hell all! Using MV, I am making a game that involves exploring a huge mansion in darkness for roughly 80% of the game. I am trying to invent ways to keep the minimalistic field of view from feeling frustrating or daunting. One obvious thing that I have thought of would be to have a map of the house itself so that players will at least know which room they are in. However due to the nature of this house in particular I am unable to create a physical map so I thought of having the "map" that you find in-game actually trigger an event to turn on RPG Maker's "Display name" for each room, hall or floor you are on. In theory you will enter the house, whose rooms will have no "display name". Everything will be totally blind in terms of the name of areas. Later after a little forced exploration you find a "Map" which allows the "display names" of each area to appear for the rest of the game. I guess my question would be simply is there is a way to turn this off and on without duplicating the maps (one with display name, one without)?


 Apologies if this was asked in the wrong place. Also for my lengthy wall of words/excessive use of parenthesis.

to enable display name, set switch x to true.


put this in your map notetag:

Page 3 under 1st thing under the map section has a change map display name.  At the beginning of the game turn it off, and when players find this item turn it on.

Wow you guys rock I feel like such a dunce that I didn't know about the option under the third tab. Is there a way to unlock the display names for specific maps while still having others locked? In my specific case it would be floors of a building.


For example you find the map of the first floor which will unlock the display names of all the rooms that are (in theory) on the first floor of the building yet still keeping the remaining floor's maps and rooms locked. I'm sorry if I'm explaining it weird.

No, that would turn display names on for every map, but you could have a condition in your transfer event that if the player doesn't have the 2nd floor map to turn it off going from the 1st floor and from the 2nd floor turning it on again.

Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
