I had closed game out of MV before running the MV update from 1.0.0 to 1.3.1. My own fault for not updating it sooner. After the update, I opened up the game I was working on and found ALL events were erased! 100% of everything I did deleted by the update. I had created a backup, but I forgot to reback up in Drop box before updating. I thought that my game was NOT in the MV folder! Its usually my preference to hide my game outside of MV's known URL scheme just in case of failures but this time apparently, I didn't do that. I have no idea why! Yes, this was a "trial game" (oh thats why. doh!) but I did make enough stuff to it, that its no longer a trial game.

Is there anything I can do? Create a new project and moving anything over doesn't work, as the events themselves are still gone. I tried that already. Thanks!

If there is nothing I can do, then just close this thread. Thanks!

UPDATE - Apparently, the update deleted all events - including those in the backup folder on Dropbox! My original backup events  are even gone. :p  And yes, adding in text to the empty event, saving, and then reopening the game does have the text there.

ALL variables and Switch data are gone.

ALL Items I put in are gone.

ALL data associated (everything excect 1/4 of the images) with my Trial game is gone except a bit of the map.

This is true of even the backup copy that should have had at least the original eventing from first half of my game.

I did not have that much of the game done, but what I did have done, took a lot of work as the events are extremely complex.

Map 2 is gone.

Adding back in all the data, (faking it just to test it out) does work. but I lost all data.

NOTE TO THOSE WHO HAVE NOT UPDATED YET:  I highly recommend taking screen captures of every single event and map so that you have a hard copy to look at when you rewrite your entire game!  (And I do not recommend updating from 1.0.0 to 1.3.1 directly. That might have been why I lost everything.)

this can't have happened by the update, because the update never touches any project - it only updates the newdata folder for future projects.

Especially if this happens not only to your project but also to the backups, it has to be something else on your computer that destroyed that data - most likely a failure on your antivirus or antimalware, have you checked their logs?

Are you saying you created your project in MV's installation folder?

I don't believe the update would only erase your events and database.  It sounds like you're saying the maps are all there still, but the events have been removed from them.  The update would not do this.  If it affected your project at all, it would have erased the whole thing, not just certain elements from certain maps.

WINDOWS Update has been known to mess around with files.  I have had RMXP or VX Ace projects reverted to earlier versions by Windows Update, and I have heard of others having the same issue.  One person recently posted about plugins being removed or something like that.

As part of the update, you are meant to copy SOME files from the MV folder into your project's folder.  If you had copied the wrong files, or too many files, you could have overwritten your project's files with default ones from a new MV project.  But you still could not have left the maps intact and removed all the events from them.

Are you sure you're opening the right project?  Have you had a windows update recently?  If you have, consider a system restore to see if that fixes it.  Otherwise we'll need more information on the exact status of your project in order to tell what's happened.

Are you saying you created your project in MV's installation folder? - Yes, and I have NO idea why! I never ever have done this before. I know better. rofl Who said getting older, you get wiser? ;)  I'm laughing at myself.

1. I know I am opening the right project.

2. I was working on the project. I was having issues with getting MV to recognize a new image - the night before, so I saved project. Did google research, and then found that an update to MV might solve that issue. I closed project  (I had saved it the day before and when I opened it I saw what I had saved.). I did the update, and found I lost data - including half of the new map I had created the two previous days).

3. I will not put it passed Windows to do something like this - destroy data. My virus software hasn't been finding anything bad in my computer. I'm sure that it didn't do anything as the timing that it runs through the system hadn't happened yet.

4. I did not know that some files have to be copied over to the Project folder.

I am redoing the project currently, and redoing all the events. I don't have the space to save my current stuff too so that I can revert back. I should have tried reverting back just before the MV update to see what windows  did, but I forgot about that. (Blame cold, stress, and brain dead.)

ISSUE: I think I know what happened. I think when Windows updated, I forgot to close MV before the update! Or I forgot I have MV up, as normally windows I update before I open up anything.

Thanks!

I think this can be closed, as I think the only solution is to just revert back, or just remake the events, and make them better the 2nd time around. Thanks again for all the information!

I don't think reverting would help, since you said it affected your dropbox... chances are the reason is external...

UPDATE Question:

1. What is the file structure for the folders in MV?UPDATE: I finally found the folders so this question I think is obsolete.

I think I installed MV in my Documents folder, for starters. I am not finding anything labeled as "Enterbrain" except for VX Ace in my C folder area.

2. What folders should be in Documents and which should be in the C folder, if any? Does this matter? I know that normally, it doesn't matter, but perhaps Windows is treating documents folder differently. (I am on Windows 7 as I refused to downgrade to 10.)

3. What files should I be transferring over after an update? (I am looking through the FAQs but missing that info. A link to the answer works too! Thanks!

By default, only projects should go into the document folder - that's where data is automatically copied to on the first time you make a new project.

As for the program folder, search "Kadokawa" and not Enterbrain. The foldername would be NewData without the space, that is most likely why you're missed it - because without NewData, you can't make a new project.

I finally did find that I installed MV in the correct folder - C folder. Thus, my games are in a different folder, in documents. Thus, it was probably a Windows issue that caused the error.

(Does this mean that everything in the NewData folder should be copied over to my new game? FAQs thing didn't mention anything.

Found the info!

If you have an old project that needs updating, Create a new project or go to the NewData folder in your RPG Maker MV root folder. Copy the new js (including libs folder but don't copy plugins.js) and index.html files to your current project!

- Replace BGM files if you got it from 1.3.0.

Thanks! I think now we can close this thread. ROFL 1. Windows probrobably caused issue. 2. I am redoing the events. 3. I found all the files I thought were missing (in original MV). And anything else? I can't think of anything. Thanks! :D
