My name is David Gonterman, and I've just gotten RPG Maker VX Ace through a sale over at Steam. I always wanted to get this program and make my own RPG or two, but costs have kept me away until recently. I'm looking forward to this experience, but there are some questions I'd like to ask first. Especially as I'm just starting out.
Making my own tilesets, maps, and what not are no problem with me. What I feel right now is the problem is whatever scripts to use. I know there are some good ones out there, and I'd like to have one that looks cool and customizable (especially with a side view for combat), but there's one problem I need to address right up front.
I'm more used to the d20 system of RPGs (the Tabletop version, such as D&D and Pathfinder) and I'd like to emulate a simplified version of a d20 system in my RPGs.
For the uninitiated, the d20 system centers on rolling a d20, adding whatever modifiers that are active, and comparing it to a target to see if it matches or exceeds it. That's the kind of engine I'd like to use.
The other part is the attributes for the characters and monsters. By default, you have ATK, DEF, MAT, MDF, AGI, and LCK. I'm more familiar with STR, DEX, CON, INT, WIS, and CHA. I'd like to use these as the modifiers (what you get when you take the original score, subtract 10, and divide by half) and add a proficiency bonus (I'll use half your level) if the action is within a character's list of things he or she knows how to do.
Those two items are what I'm looking for as for initial scripting chores, although I'm sure they're going to be a lot more. Since this program uses Ruby for scripts, I've started to learn the language (pretty easy to learn, may I add) and will appreciate some pointers in the right direction so I can make a decent custom engine for my games.
I look forward to hearing from you all and thank you in advance for your time and consideration.
