Mystery fiction is a loosely-defined term.

1.It is often used as a synonym for detective fiction or crime fiction— in other words a novel or short story in which a detective (either professional or amateur) investigates and solves a crime mystery. Sometimes mystery books are nonfiction. The term "mystery fiction" may sometimes be limited to the subset of detective stories in which the emphasis is on the puzzle/suspense element and its logical solution (cf. whodunit), as a contrast to hardboiled detective stories, which focus on action and gritty realism.

2.Although normally associated with the crime genre, the term "mystery fiction" may in certain situations refer to a completely different genre, where the focus is on supernatural or thriller mystery (the solution doesn't have to be logical, and even no crime is involved). This usage was common in the pulp magazines of the 1930s and 1940s, where titles such as Dime Mystery, Thrilling Mystery and Spicy Mystery offered what at the time were described as "weird menace" stories – supernatural horror in the vein of Grand Guignol. This contrasted with parallel titles of the same names which contained conventional hardboiled crime fiction. The first use of "mystery" in this sense was by Dime Mystery, which started out as an ordinary crime fiction magazine but switched to "weird menace" during the latter part of 1933.[1]

Thank you for the thorough explanation Reynard! It's good to know that my idea wasn't overruled. Hopefully it will prompt others to ask more questions and expand on what exactly a "Mystery" can be composed of.

I'm indifferent about the deadline, the ammount of time we were given seems long enough but...I'll leave it up to the other chaps to decide :3

Just something guys, if the deadline is too short or something, I can add a week extension by demand.
YES! I have to go to an introduction week at my university next week, so no game makesies then :o ! Another week would probably be a lifesaver!

An extension would be niiiice.

Would justify me making custom battlers for the protagonists. (I'm sorry, I just love designing characters! It wouldn't be right to not use 'em for something like this, and besides, their designs are already a part of their characters, so...I can't use placeholder RTP characters like they have right now!)

This contest sounds cool, I love mystery-related games. Definitely, I will join this contest (and seriously finish it). A deadline extension will be nice, too.

Mystery? Those are hard to do. : (

I've been on a lot of contests and I think extensions need to be done carefully, they sap motivation and drag out interest, a small one can help those that got saddled with real life issues, but when it gets longer it ruins the scope and plans people built initially.

I also remember losing one because the contest holder extended the scope of the contest until one entry they really wanted to see done was finished. Surprisingly they won hands down and most other entries never heard any feedback.

I could see a few days or even a week max, but I'd hate to see an almost 2-week extension to an initially 3-week contest.

School just started for a lot of us, and some of us had a lot of stuff on our plate. This 2 week extension is a god-send.

I thought the extension was mostly to compensate the coming of school events. I had alot of people telling me they probably won't have time to join because of major project thesis or school finally started. Things like that. Granted this is the last extension I'm doing <:3c

It is a 2 week extension at most. (it was 9 before)

Oh, thank God, now I can take my time instead of pushing all my Portfolio Design projects to the side.

I would have just made the deadline, so now I'll be able to take my time and release it somewhere between the 13th or whatnot.

September is like "Relatives bug Zeramae" month too, so I won't have to say no to hanging out with the family...although sometimes I do want to xD

In any case now I don't have to worry about just hitting the deadline ^_^

We manage making 6hr games in two weeks, even with a family of four (two kids taking music lessons and soccer) and full-time jobs. I guess it really depends on which hobbies you concentrate on when you're out of work/school. Either way I personally feel unmotivated when extensions get really stretched. I can understand people under special circumstances getting extensions, like a family member having cancer (which we have as well) or something, but I don't think school or work are valid excuses. Just a personal thought.
