"Mystic Quest Line"

Hi Guys,


So I am creating a rather large Fantasy RPG.


There is a main quest line, and optional quests, what I need your help with is if you would find this appealing in terms of a quest line.


So in my game there are a specific set of 'people' called Mystics, they helped create and advanced all types of magic, some of these people are good, some are bad. - these are not my main plot, more an explanation to how magic is advanced in the world, as well as giving the world itself more backstory.


Basically when exploring the vast lands, you may come across a map that have a crystal pulsating a specific spell across the entire map, turning the crystal on/off will change the map.


So turning a crystal off may turn a once dead forest / no water etc. into a map full of life - water flowing etc.


Others you may turn a crystal on, and it will suddenly shift the water ways in a specific map to make a cave accessible etc.


What would you guys think of quests like these?


Should they BE quests, or should it just be when you figure it out, you can change the map (or should I not really bother with the idea?)

It reminds me some quests in Golden Sun. 


I think it should be a part of a quest, like "find a way to obtain access to the cave" with some ints to make the player think he should look for some crystals.

What I may do, is make the quest given when you enter the map rather than someone actually asking you to do it as well, so when you enter the map you get the quest to "revive the land" or whatever.

I think it should just be a way to change the map, it doesn´t need to be announced as a quest. My reason for this is to make the whole thing more organic (pardon the pun).

Actually, I agree with Canini. I would love a mechanic where your actions change the world around you (Honestly, the most I have in that is my proposed timeline for future games in the series accounting for either major outcome of this game XD)

I will have to think on this one, I am just trying to imagine playing the game and seeing what I'd prefer.


I think that, overall walking into a map, and being rewarded to explore and use these crystals etc to  change the maps layouts and such.


I feel like @Canini is right that if you got a quest it would almost spoil it.


The first encounter of one a brief tutorial will come up explaining what they are - well when I say tutorial a party member will explain it to you.


I am working on a large map at the moment and will see how this plays out!! :)
