Ok, I'm completely new when it comes to Ruby Script, and I'm pretty much starting from the bottom!

I'm trying to get my head around how to insert a Name Box above the text box when an NPC talks. I have looked at this: http://yanflychannel.wordpress.com/rmvxa/core-scripts/ace-message-system/ and it's all fine and dandy, but...when it comes to me copying and pasting the script into my materials section, I just can't, for the life of me, make it work!

Here is what I've done:

And I keep getting this message whenever I try and playtest the game:

Script " line 4:SyntaxError occured.

unexpected ':', expecting $end

Default:   Effect:

There is probably something glaring me in the face and saying "I'm wrong!" but as I said...I've had no prior experience with Ruby. Python yes, this, no.

It looks like you didn't copy the actual script, only the directions/configuration. :)

Click on the Download Link on Yanfly's page. It will come up as an .rb file that you can open with Notepad. Copy the entire contents of the file and paste them inside the box on the right.

Default and Effect should be comments, otherwise they are interpreted as code, which doesn't do exist, so you're getting a error. Put a # in front of the line and see if that helps.

What you copied are merely instructions. What you need is the script itself. And in the message box you but something like \nb[Namehere] or something like that. You can open .rb files with Notepad.

Oh dear, *facepalm* that was certainly not my proudest moment  :stare:

I really do apologise!

Ok, I've pasted the code into the materials section (woohoo!) and now where do I stick the \n[namehere] code in order to allow a name box to show above the text for the NPC?

I know you're saying the Message Box, where would I find that and does the code need certain indentations etc?

(I've tried putting that code into what I assumed was the message box - the same place you place NPC speech? - I just get [Name] show up in the text box when the NPC speaks)

Going to read extensive Ruby tutorials after this pickle  >_>

\n[namehere]
First, that is the wrong code. If you check Yanfly's instruction, the code has to be \n<namestring>

The message box is the field for the text that should be visible on the screen - you make the event, use the command "show text" and then put the textcode into the message box that appear, probably directly before you enter the text that should appear on screen.

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
