Need a spriting tool with opacity and better grids than Gimp.

I'm trying to tell GIMP what size to make the grid so that I can edit the blank child and make the sprite for my main character in the same style as the other sprites in the RPG Maker DS set. Gimp won't let me set a grid that isn't square, but at the same time graphicsgale doesn't do opaque layers that I need for simple shading. If someone could suggest a freeware program that would do both I would appreciate it. >.<

Paint.NET has transparency/opacity, layers and grids (via an add-on, which lets you specify a different width and height for cells).

Why would you want to use a grid that ISN'T square?

The grids used for the DS resources are 24x32, more of a rectangle. Gimp only lets you make a grid with the same height and width. Thanks a lot Shaz I'll check out Paint.NET. Where can I find that Grid add on? :)

Archeia I mean that Graphics Gale does it's opaique layers limiting what squares you can draw on instead of how GIMP blends the color you draw in the above layer with the color of the bottom layer, so say I made a green ball sprite, when I wanted to shade it I could make a layer above it with 25 to 50 percent opecity and pain black where I wanted shading so that the end result would be a darker shade of the same green. Graphics Gale doesn't do that as far as I can tell.

You can set different heights/widths in GIMP. You just have to uncheck a little box below where you type in the specifications (dont have it open right now in front of me, but its there, I do it all the time).

I'm not sure how you can use a 24x32 grid in an engine that uses a 32x32 grid. Unless you're talking about resources other than tilesets?

This is the plugin I use with Paint.net that gives you independent width/height for your grid.

It can to the Opacity% but if you meant adjustment layers like Multiply, etc. That doesn't work yes. You don't really need those for pixel art (which is what GG is focused on).

I use gimp all the time to make sprites. The grid boxes are guides only anyways. You do not have to stay completely in each square. I only use it to make sure my characters stay in line with the other poses.

I'm talking about the character sprites that came with DS, they are 24x32 Shaz.

Anyway I'm sorry if I'm confused it's been a long time since I've done any graphic work like this.

so hopefully tomorrow i get to go home from the hospital i've been here for 5 days already and it's driving me mad. I miss my family like crazy but at least I get to use my own toiletries and my own clothes. My mom is coming to visit soon i can't wait to see her cause i miss her the most. :kaojoy:
Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
