So I'm currently trying to make it so I have four item categories in my game.

"Evidence", "Profile", "Gifts" and "Notes"

I managed to edit the Normal Item slot and Key Item to be the first two listed above, but I'm having trouble changing it so armor and weapons change into gifts and notes. I created a common event so when you select Evidence or Profile it pulls an image, but when I try to do that with armor and weapons the option to select it is blanked out so it won't work of course. All I want is somebody to refer me to a plugin in or tell me how to create two addition item categories that work exactly like key items or items. I don't have any coding experience whatsoever so please tell in simplest terms of how to do this.

Is this for VX or VX Ace?

only MV has plugins - VX and VXA have scripts.
So you have a lot of things mixed up because you posted this in VX.
Please state what maker you're using, preferably set it on your profile (where it currently says "other".

Weapons and armors are not items, so don't have item categories and can't be set as key items.

Do you have battles in your game? Do you use the armor and weapons as armor and weapons? If not, just make them items with the appropriate categories.

There are no battles, it’s a horror game esc. project. I did try to make the armour and weapon slots act as the normal item slot, but for some reason I’m not able to select them when I’m play testing. I’m looking for a work around or a way to make new item categories. EDITED: I also need to have all four item categories, so I can’t just merge the four into 2 or something. And I’ll post in the right area next time.

mmm ... I think I misunderstood. Did you change the labels from Armor/Weapons to Gifts/Notes, and set up your items as Armors and Weapons, and you can't select them?

You may need a script, as you can't select armors and weapons from the menu in that way. Try Yanfly's script linked above and see how it goes.

Okay thanks I’ll try it out later and see if it works or not.

@BuzzGaming57 You have been asked to clarify exactly which engine you are using, and ideally also put that info under your avatar. Please post to answer this specific question, because the suggestions you receive are engine-dependent and people are potentially wasting their time if they give info for the wrong engine. If you really are using VX, then some VX Ace solutions won't work.

I'll make sure to post it under the right section next time, it was just a mistake. This is my first post after all. I probably will never post again anyway unless another problem comes up, but thanks for the help.

As it's VX Ace, I shall have to move it from here to the correct forum. More people look at Ace queries than VX ones, so you may get more suggestions once that's done.

How do you add custom items into your inventory using yanfly's script?

If you're wanting custom categories, you could probably use this:
https://www.rpgmakercentral.com/topic/661-vxa-categorize-item-scene/

I'm not sure what script call that is you're using above (looks like it should be a comment or in a notetag), but any time you're using numbers in a script, remove the leading zeroes, e.g.
Code:
$data_items[1]  #NOT  $data_items[001]

I tried both ways but it won't work with either of them. I also can't use other scripts because it won't work with the current one I'm using.

If you're using Yanfly's Item Menu, then you need to use this in the item's notebox:
Code:
<category: string>
where string is the name of the item category that you set up here:
Code:
ITEM_TYPES =[
    # [  :symbol,   "Display"],
      [   :field,     "Field"], # Shows Menu-usable items.
      [  :battle,    "Battle"], # Shows Battle-usable items.
      [:category,   "Special"], # Categorized by <category: string>
      [:category,"Ingredient"], # Categorized by <category: string>
      [:key_item, "Key Item"], # Shows all key items.
      [ :all, "All"], # Shows all usable items.
    ] # Do not remove this.
That's in the set up portion of Yanfly's script.

The notebox is found in the database: open it, select Items, select the item you want and it's the box in the bottom right-hand corner that reads Note.

I believe something like this could work for you, but I haven't tested anything:
Code:
ITEM_TYPES =[
    # [  :symbol,   "Display"],
      [   :category,     "Evidence"], # Categorized by <category: string>
      [:category,   "Profile"], # Categorized by <category: string>
      [:category,"Gifts"], # Categorized by <category: string>
      [:category,  "Notes"], # Categorized by <category: string>
    ] # Do not remove this.
For Evidence, your notetag should be:
Code:
<category: evidence>

Thank you, I finally got it working after 12 hours. The Notebox is what was confusing me, I thought it was something in the script. So the problem was solved.
