Mature Content Warning
Some of my testers told me this game is likely PG-13 from their points of view. But, as people are living in different countries, some places in the world may be more conservative than others.

So, I will just list everything that may be "mature content" here:

NEOLITHIC To the End is a game that has content related to cartoon violence(Because of guns and combat), lots of blood(and tomato juice)

The exact violence/blood level can be checked in the trailers.
In version 20210315, a game option has been added to customize the blood/gore level. (You can even replace blood with flowers or kittens.)

It also has content related to strong language(Rarely. But, it exists. Because some stories are emotional), alcoholic drinks(Because there is a bar), and other general mature content.

Being a modern-day supernatural RPG, the game also has content related to conspiracy theories, radical politics, and atheism.

The game also has content related to LGBT which may not be suitable for players in certain countries. To be more specific, The player can change their character's gender at will during the game progress if they want. And certain characters may fall in love with the main character without check their gender.

There is no adult-only sexual content in the game right now.


SYNOPSIS
A modern-day open-world RPG about a secret society. With the help of your companions, some demons, some cats, and any supernatural entities you can bend to your will, all the different ways to solve problems, you may still fail to save the world. Life is simply unfair.

Welcome to our secret society of [redacted]. We are among the most ancient ones in our line of work. For a long time, we have witnessed the rise and fall of many others.
The situation is grim, the world almost ended in 2008, 2012, 2015, and 2020.
Some people predict it will keep ending this year, next year, and the year after.

But, well, even if that's true, even if the ending is inevitable, it is tragic, we are still alive.
So, cheer up! We shall carry on.

  • Murin Erebus. Better known as "The Keeper of Time". Deceased in 2018.
  • The Nameless Captain. Once a captain of the secret organization's financial department, he played his part to stop the world economy from collapsing in 2008, 2015, and 2020. His name and his team's records have been wiped out by someone or something. He seeks to recover those lost memories.
  • "Charlie". A captain leads an operation to eliminate a demon in an airport. Something went wrong.
  • Alicia.The girl who tries to fix the situation in that airport. But, it only gets worse.
  • Mephisto. The demon they tried to kill. He is NOT a friend of Faust. He does NOT like humans... At least that's what he tells everyone...
  • Meridiana. The succubus who is still in love with a pope.
  • The Bazaar. Both a place to trade magic equipment and an entity that collects love stories.
  • Donald Trump. The 45th president of the United States who changed the world forever...This is the "radical politics" part of the game and the life. (Mentioned only for now.)

The World & Background
The year is 2021, It's in our world. It's happening right now.
We are under the siege of supernatural threats and those money-hungry games made by big companies.
People lose faith and forget the indie spirit of making games. (It's true... at least in mainland China...Almost everyone just wants to make games for money.)
It's time to at least try to bring back some old memories.

I am doing most of the work alone, using the old good RMXP.

A detailed credit file can be found in the game's folder. (It's too long to be posted here.)
Please let me know if I missed anyone.
Everyone on that list can also ask me for a free steam key.

DD#7 5th Week's Recap

Previously in NEOLITHIC weekly recap, I told a story about a brave doctor in this world plagued under COVID-19.

This week's highlight will be another story behind the scene.
It's about the map of "The Ancient Stone Bridge".

The artist who drew the tiles that I used in the game is "金鱼草" who joined Project 1 in 2014 (when 66rpg became a ruin...). But, he disappeared in 2018.
This was the last work he post on Project 1.
He told us, other people think his work is ugly. He found himself totally unable to actually make a game. So, he published his artwork, allowing anyone to use or modify it before he eventually disappeared.

I admit there are some flaws in the tileset such as the bridge stairs.
But, I do not intend to modify it. I will keep the tiles as is while using some of my tricks to work around them. In memory of him, I shall carry his tileset into NEOLITHIC's eternal updates so that he and his work will be remembered.

In the past years, we lost too many people like him.

This is just another memory this game is carrying.
But, each memory likes this shall not be forgotten.
This is NEOLITHIC...

Other major updates in this week:
Lots of furniture, some chairs can be used as weapons.
I also ended up adding "Sanders'Steel Chair" which is now the best non-procedurally generated melee weapon in-game. (I have lots of respect for him. Hopefully, people can still remember him many years later not just for memes.)
Maybe I will even make an achievement when someone uses this chair to hit Donald Trump when he is added into the game. (But, players shall be free to pick their side. The game shall be politically neutral even I may not. )

Apple trees and "Gardening" skills are also functional. But, before we head to the path of Stardew Valley and build a farm, I think we shall do more debug in this new system.

All previously place-holder locations in Liu can be entered. Many of them still lack their story and other content. But, our evolution will eventually cover all of them...

We also survived a major infrastructure incident in France that caused my VPN to be dead for many hours. But, I'm glad the problem is solved and we kept our daily update going.

DD #8 In the Name of Diversity (6th Week Recap)

Previously in NEOLITHIC weekly recap, I told a story about a map and an artist.

This week, let's talk about the diversity of the game.
At the beginning of this week, people may notice that I've spent some time reducing the violence and gore content in the game and made the game closer to an R14 level.
However, just you know, I'm totally against any censorship in games, movies, books, and basically anything. I am in China, you can hardly find any place in the world to censor everything harder than here. And, I really do not like it.

But, why did I still do that?
It's more about diversity. Some people may like seeing all the tomato juices flying around the scene (sometimes just for dark humor), others may not.
The blood is not gone. It's turned into a game option. You may keep all the blood, reduce the size of blood textures, make it invisible, or even replace all those blood textures with kittens or flowers. (Yes, seriously, each time you knock out some unfortunate guy on the street, they may spawn a kitten. That may somehow be scarier.

In addition to that, with the game's art assets overwriting system for modding, you can technically, replace the blood texture with anything you like...

I believe people enjoy games differently. Thus, I made game options like this to make the gaming experience can be customized and enjoyed by people who play games for different purposes. (In addition to the fact this is already a chaotic wild open-world RPG which will have a diversity in the game content itself.)

In addition to the diversity of game options, I also added 2 female characters variations with darker skin color (which we previously lack) to the game. (After, I spend some time improving my modeling/texturing skills and upgrade the 3D modeling pipeline a bit to make that possible.)

"Gardening" skill will now affect how many items you can harvest. (Each level increases 2% on apple trees.)
As the more you harvest, the more exp you will gain. It leads to the loop of Matthew effect.

DD #9 There Are No Facts, Only Interpretations (7th Week Recap)

Previously in the NEOLITHIC weekly recap, I talked about diversity and censorship.
Once again, I shall denounce the censorship.
For today is a sad day for many players in China and German. They are the only people in this world who can not purchase a certain game that is released today on Steam.
Hopefully, one day, all games can be enjoyed by everyone in this world.
I can write millions of words on this topic.

However, let's go back to our game for now.
This week, all planned content for the 3D printing store has been finished for now.
The storytelling may be a bit uncommon there.
You may find information from 4 sources. They all have their stories regarding the backstory of this store. But, are those the facts? Maybe not.

Maybe "there are no facts" at all, "only interpretations". It's the perspectivism of Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche, a wise philosopher.

In a world full of mysteries and secrets, you will find a lot of information. Some may be straightforward. Others may not be so. What is the truth then?
Different people may reach different conclusions.

Sometimes, there will be no canon in this game as I believe those are the moments that the author must die.
After all, what important to you, my players, is, the game is to be played rather than the "passions" of me. Pride has been my sin for a long time. And I can always find it in many of those who tasted the power of "creation" by making games. I intend to overcome it.

Thus, I humbly make this game while it's up to you to tell the story. The story of your version. Your story of the history that is happening right now.

DD #10 The Demo Launch Week
Previously in the NEOLITHIC weekly recap, I talked about some storytelling aspects of the game.

This week, as the demo launched on Mar.31 when Nintendo killed Mario and Degica killed the official support of old RPG Maker engines, I shall talk about this demo release week.

It's lots of fun and madness...

Here are some of them:

1, The False-Positive Strikes Again!
Just 24 hours before the demo release, when I was going over some last minutes of review and debugging. Someone told me some anti-virus software killed some other parts of the game. (Not the main game file, that has been whitelisted by almost everyone.)
Thus, they got some crashes as those files are killed by anti-virus software.
As a result, I have to bomb a lot of anti-virus companies' email boxes to tell them to whitelist all those files as well.
RMXP is an old engine. Thus, I am using a lot of weird "alien technologies" to enhance its capabilities. It's quite normal that anti-virus software does not even know such techniques exist. Thus, they just marked the files as malware. (Ture story, a certain company doesn't even know how to run the file I provided to them, even with source code. I have mails as evidence. )
The communication is still ongoing. But, almost all the big anti-virus companies have already whitelisted the files.
If you encounter any problems that your anti-virus software is killing game files, thus causing crashes. Just let me know. I will handle it.

2, Global Demo License Numbers.
Based on previous wishlist numbers, I can almost predict the top 3 will be China/USA/Russia. But, things are getting very dramatically.
Day One, the US is leading on the number but only slightly ahead of Russia.
China is surprisingly in 3rd place. The situation maintained till the end of the day. (Based on Steam data)
Day Two, China caught up. But the top three are still very close to each other. At the end of the day, China is slightly ahead.
Day Three, here is when something really crazy starts to happen.
After a long day shooting mails to anti-virus companies. I suddenly noticed a dramatic increase in the Russia demo license number. It's like +70 within an hour. As a result, Russia took first place and was 50% ahead of China.
I was overjoyed. Thus, I worked on the Siberia content which previously planned for a month later. And pushed out the "Bear, Vodka, AK-47" update.
However, when I was almost certain Russia will be the winner of Day Three, and went to sleep. Something even more crazy happened when I wake up...
That's a +666(yes, exactly this number) of the new demo number from China.
I don't know what happened. But, the chart tells me China now has the 57% of all demos globally. Russia is in 2nd place which is about 12% while the USA is about 7%.
I opened QQ to check on players in China. I found one player who played the demo straight for 7 hours. (Using a group of kittens wearing AK-47 shooting everybody. It looks quite funny.) I am wordless... I thought the content is like just 3 hours...

An old game like this one and old engines like all those RPG Maker engines whose official supports are dropped may die another day. But, it's certainly not today.

I find this game...confusing...not a good thing or a bad thing necessarily but I'm having difficulty reconciling the FMV cutscenes with 3D models and voiceover (of a sort) with some screenshots showing what looks like a very strange FPS from the planet Venus with RTP assets and other screenshots showing what looks a lot like the RPG Maker XP DBS...what is even happening lol?

How you want to develop your game is entirely up to you, but I think it might be more practical to not worry about facilitating modding until the base game is complete and stable.

Regarding the ellipses
I didn't realize the ellipses issues before. But, as you pointed out, I removed those unnecessary ellipses. And thanks for the link. I shall go over to check the entire English localization of the game as well.

Regarding the mixing 3D models and RTP assets
It is a problem. And very likely the No.1 biggest problem of the game which unfortunately lacks a good solution right now.
The current situation is:
The game requires a lot of art assets and I am not good at 2D arts.
Thus, I am basically mass product 3D character models which can be easily animated.
But, even that is still too slow comparing to the game's functionality and content growth.
Thus, other types of assets (such as RTP) will have to be used to fill the gap.
To hire an artist to handle this job is currently beyond budget.
The combat system is pretending to be just like RMXP's default battle system on the surface until something like a gunfight kicks in (combat can go quite wild with all the weird functions in the game. the "FPS" is just like a mini-game in the combat system. It's based on player feedback, to actually let everybody "shoot" something when guns are equipped, instead of just play some battle animations.) However, as a side effect, a combat system like this generates even more demands in the arts.

Meanwhile, there is also another reason to use certain terrible-looking assets that do not really fit in there.
For example:
The image of the "ghost cat" looks really bad in the game. However, that's the only photo I have for a "company cat" we lost when running a start-up company. Because the landlord hates pets in the building. To make a 3D model or 2D sprite of the cat just feels like missing something. Thus, the original photo is directly used as another part of the memory.

The trails are more about the background stories of each faction. There are at least 3 more to come. But, it does contain actual gameplay footage. All the voice-overs are generated by AI as I don't think people want to hear my Chinglish.


Regarding the title
There are 2 explanations.
The real-life one is, the game was first released in 2004, as a fan-game of StoneAge online.
This is how it looks like in 2004: (A list of streaming videos by a player made in 2019. I don't know how he played the game for 8 hours >.>)
Unfortunately, Stone Age Online died alongside their developers/publishers long ago while my game is still alive and keeps evolving.
This is how it looks like in 2012: (when the game is already renamed to Neolithic)
But, I decided to go on Steam so that players in China can download the game from an uncensored platform which I am also unlikely to outlive. (Previously, the game was hosted in different RPG Maker communities in China, they are all dead in the last 16 years.)
But, a fan game can't really go on Steam with all the art assets that potentially may have copyright issues. Thus, I hit the "reset the world" button again.
And here we are, in a modern-day setting telling another story.
But, I don't think I shall forget the past. After all, it's more like a memento than a commercial game.
As a result, the name "NEOLITHIC" is kept.
My die-hard cultists that followed the game for more than a decade will likely want to murder me if I don't...

The in-game explanation is a more grimdark one related to the story...
What my players from the previous versions of the game already know is the stories in a world that have a more StoneAge look is actually happening in a few hundred years in the future.
So, this time, I may tell the story about how the world gets there.


Regarding the modding
It's already in, functioning quite well in the past years.
The current plan will be more on Steam workshop integration when ready.

Hello, welcome to another week's NEOLITHIC weekly recap.
Previously, I talked about something about the Demo Launch week.

This week, the priority is on addressing feedback and overall quality of life improvements.

As the demo went public, I am able to reach out to more players beyond my closed beta testers. As a result, I received more feedback/suggestions/bug reports from many people.
They are very helpful, very constructive.
Thus, the frequency of the update increased even beyond daily.
There are hotfixes, there are secret updates just for testing, there are branch updates for comparison.

I am working on many different channels to collect those feedback and implementing changes into the game.

Among the bug reports
Thanks to TheGentlemanLoser, we are solving ellipses problems in English.
Thanks to FFBD192E we found out what crashes the game around 9 minutes of the main story to some players and some hotkey issues.

Among the feedback,
We now also have dogs in addition to cats.
We can also go fishing in the pocket dimension as long as there is water.
Cats are buffed.
The keyboard script is rewritten.
Archive function is added so that we can now review previously found documents and finished quests.

We also have a less confusing, 100% game footage trailer

It's my duty to carry this game forward.
However, I am not able to accomplish so much without you.

DD #12 The Monks (10th Week Recap)
Another week has passed.
This week, I am mostly working on adding details to existed areas.
The Bazaar got procedurally generated quests.
The battle animation got some reworks with bug fixes.
The problematic facility of "Problematic Kids Treatment Center" can be entered while everything inside does problematically not feel right.

And then, here comes the monks.
They are wandering around the streets wearing traditional clothes, speaking about the wisdom of Buddhism.
It is a scene that is actually rarely seen nowadays when you are walking in the real-life version of this town.
Just like the ancient stone bridge, they may look like belong to another time and space.
However, what if they are always here?
In a world where all mysteries are real, where magic never really left earth, it is quite possible. Just like the best place to hide someone is putting them in a crowd of people.

They are procedurally generated, like most of the people in the town. You can talk to them, or even attack them just like you can do to others. But, when you attack them, that's when you may find the most unusual part of them.

I want their AI can somehow reflect their peaceful nature.
I give them a guideline of their action. But, I do no strictly control their behavior.
I give them a goal, to defeat the attacker without violence.
The rest, I don't know. I can predict a few tactics they may use to defend themselves. But, I do not know what exactly will happen.
That's the interesting part of free will, even it's artificial.

It may all start with you find a monk on the street.
And then, what happened? I am interested to know that, too.

However, by the nature of this overflow, its behavior is inhuman. Thus, I have added code, trying to detect it and eliminate it from my side. Thus, I think I have made it much smoother.
As I only have an XBOX controller, I'm not sure if other controllers work.
Added functionality support to allow a language having a different display name than its file name.
Added functionality to allow different languages to use different default fonts.
The default font of English has been changed to Verdana. (Previously, it was a Chinese font shared with the Chinese language)
The default font before any language has been selected has also been changed to Verdana.
The goal is to make sure the text does not look too terrible in some systems. (However, my user data is very limited. It's depending on user feedback only.)

Hey, I really like some of the features you have, being able to mod and stuff is amazing to find in an RPG Maker game. I wish I went to MV. I've not played your game just yet, but I will try it out and leave some comments.

An auto-mapping system that mimics the autotile system has been complete to solve the problem that our ancient RMXP lacks the number of autotiles that can be used on the same tileset.

####The Admin Privilege Problem############
The game will try to restart itself and request admin privileges if the system somehow stops the game from writing data. (It happens if the game is installed into a system folder such as "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common")
All the details will still appear in the error message. (I want you to know all the details about why the game requests admin privileges. You may also decide to not grant such privileges if you don't trust me. >.<)
The game will not automatically request admin privileges by default. As I consider that's just a terrible practice done by many others. So, everything is still up to you.
It may not be the best solution as people who are affected by this problem will still see 3 error messages pop up every time the game starts. But, it is a solution. Meanwhile, I do not want to do anything like any shady software(*cough* Tencent *cough*) to sneak in to "help you" to set up the admin privileges. That's just wrong.
I'd still recommend installing the game somewhere that is not in the system folders. (But, unfortunately, that's the default folder of steam to many people.)

Turned the background during the conversation of the airport officer a bit darker while a small detail in the background can still be visible.
Changed a few words in the English localization of the tutorial part of the game to make Zhang Yin less aggressive in one scene.
Changed the Sidewalk tiles in Liu from chessboard to stones.
Added some decoration near Liu's hospital.
Added a defibrillator in a previously "you found nothing useful" location in the safehouse.

Drop money from the menu can now only happen if the mouse or gamepad clicks on the money window. Any confirmation keys from the keyboard will no longer trigger it anymore.

just beat ff7 original for the first time since 2010. having played remake last year, I have a much better appreciation for the original oddly enough. I still like some of the character presentation in remake more, but the original's got a lot going for it.
