I wasn't quite sure where to post this so I figured this would be a good place, since it's about new people.

So yeah, I'm new here, and this looks like a neat site so far. Unfortunately, I barely finished the official tutorials for rpg maker vx ace and now I'm a bit lost. Not just with this website, but in general.

I know rudimentary C++, and I've already found a tutorial series for Ruby, so I'm fine with that, but I don't really know my way around the website, or the larger RPG Maker community. Is there a new user's guide or a thread about "things I wish I had learned when I started using RPG maker" or something?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi!

You must have seen this in Andar's signature:

This is a very good, in depth, tutorial about the specificities of RPG Maker.  Moving through its steps will gain you a lot of time in the long run.

It was written for ace, which is fine in your case, but almost everything you'll learn will be used should you decide to move to MV.

There are also plenty of video tutorials on youtube to teach about scripting, however I only know of those for MV so I can't help you there. Also you should probably get acquainted with eventing before going all out with scripting everything ^^.

I hope you'll enjoy your stay in the community!

Edit: Damn Ninjas!

You've gotten some good leads on tutorials and yes there are topics along the lines of "what I wish I'd known". Touchfuzzy has also done some great blogs that might be help. http://blog.rpgmakerweb.com/category/advice/

Also, in this section, there are a lot of good community discussions over many of his blog articles. http://forums.rpgmakerweb.com/index.php?/forum/109-social-media-announcements/

Most of all, don't be afraid to become a part of the community - chat with people, participate in discussions, ask questions if you can't find the answers that you need and you'll learn a lot in no time. Oh, and one of my biggest pieces of advice for learning the RPG Maker engines, is to spend some time reading questions other people ask, even if you don't think it directly applies to you at the time. I've learned so much from seeing other people answer questions that I thought I already knew the answer to.

Welcome to the group!
Seems your questions have been answered already, a couple tips to keep in mind though are: #1 ALWAYS keep backups(on a flashdrive, online, on an external hdd, etc...) of anything/everything that you would mind losing and #2 keep an extra, kinda pointless, project around to experiment and try out new things you think of in so you don't accidentally mess up the project you actually care about while figuring them out.

Cadh: I second the backup tip...I keep at least 2 separate backup copies of all my projects, code, etc. Believe me, it has saved me a load of heartache a few times. This is ESSENTIAL for anyone who codes and makes apps/games for a living.

Don't forget, aspiring writers: Personality isn't what your characters do, it is WHY they do it.
Hello! I would like to know if there are any pluggings or any way to customize how battles look?
I was thinking that when you start the battle for it to appear the eyes of your characters and opponents sorta like Ace Attorney.
Sadly I don't know how that would be possible so I would be needing help! If you can help me in any way I would really apreciate it!
