April Dev Log

Wow, are we nearly halfway through 2020? Could that be true? Well, it is if you look at the calendar...

So what's been going on with the Isle of Bobbin during April? Well, it's been a story of two halves... Two weeks of massive progress followed by two weeks of literally not much.

As you may already know or have guessed, I have a day job which became busy over the last couple of weeks, enough to mean that even during Ramadan (which we work reduced hours) I've been working late. This has knocked me off schedule for a sprint or so (sprint as in Agile method of working). However, I also produced about a months worth of work during the first two weeks and so I don't think I'm behind at all...

I worked very hard on character dialogue (again!!!) but I think I really got much better at creating much more interesting characters. I also finished the book shop programming and apart from the individual books I now have a working place you can go once a day and pick a random book to read through.

When I say a bookshop I've actually been creating books you can read; now this is only 2 pages, but it's complete with pictures and enough writing to make it worth reading. I also have been trying to recreate an art style of old fashioned books, almost like an etching or print, which was really fun.

So what characters have I been adding? So far, the most interesting is Cullodena the cat who runs the bookshop. Cullodena only refers to herself as us, or we and speaks in a mysterious way, she also spends most of her time outside of work on top of the Cat's Cafe sign where you can shout up to her and ask her questions. It was really fun writing such a character into the game and she also has a love affair with the Punk hedgehog called Boyd!

Now, Boyd is a strange tale, he's actually looking after Adaira the older badger and there is a BIG mystery surrounding their relationship which I won't spoil here.

Oh and there's Glenn and Finella, the married cat couple who live every day like its Appreciation Day (basically Christmas but without the religious part), but really Glenn always refers to the fact that he 'won a lottery' and wants to avoid some people who may, or may not, want some of that money back... His wife, Finella, loves Appreciation Day so much, that she forced him to decorate the house with these celebratory decorations! This is mainly due to the fact that she never leaves the house in case some of Glenn's 'friends' from the mainland find out they are on the island!!

So lot's is going on, on the Isle of Bobbin now!

What's the plan for the next month? Most likely I'll add some of the school scenes in the game. I'm working on the two Hedgehog sisters who are the teachers, I think I want them to be very reluctant and lazy which makes you help them out in teaching the kids; I'm thinking they could be exchange teachers that are on the island to get experience in a smaller school before returning to the mainland with some much-needed experience. Something like that anyway... Let's see! Maybe you could let me know what you think.

Anyway, apart from the development of the game, I've basically done NO SOCIAL MEDIA, to help promote the game at all... Yuck... I'm so bad at it... I wish I could get into it and find the time... but I'm still stuck on getting a Steam page to point people towards... Basically, I suck! But then I guess keeping up with the game development at this early stage is time well spent - there's no point in showing off a game that won't exist or that will be rushed because I've spent all of my time on Twitter or whatever...

So that's it for another month of the Isle of Bobbin!

I hope you're all safe and well and speak again soon!

Much Love
Steven

I love hand-drawn aesthetics, especially with RPG Maker games. Love the work you're putting in, keep it up!

May Dev Log

Hello! Another month and another dev log... Well, last month I mentioned things have slowed down for me in terms of GameDev and this month I've decided to do something that will improve the game a great deal; but at the same time, I've literally opened pandora's box...

So what on earth could that be? I've decided to improve the night-time graphics. Which means I have to re-colour (by hand) everything...

So why would I do this? Take a look at the screenshots and you be the judge on that!

Before

After

So why was it so dark before? I planed my game pretty well, to be honest. Making an OpenWorld game I knew that I needed to plan everything in advance, things like seasons, weather, how the weather would impact when characters would be outside or stay in because it's raining? What they would say if it's raining? If it's a special holiday day what happens? If they like you what happens? EVERYTHING is interlinked and needs some kind of meticulous planning.

I mentioned in an earlier dev log that I'd added weekends and it didn't create too much re-work and I implemented it pretty easily. I added night-time to the game early on, some characters prefer to stay indoors, kids aren't going to the local school at night, shops are shut, all done and dusted and pre-planned to perfection... however, I then foolishly added a filter to make everything look dark... It made walking around at night impossible and pretty pointless.

So for some reason, I knew that the more I developed the game, the deeper I was getting into and decided to just jump in and take this problem on.

The other issue I was facing was that my maps looked nice with all the cute fabric art style but they were very static; I'd tried a few things to make clouds move but couldn't crack it and wanted stars at night but it wasn't working at all. One thing I've learnt (and I'm sure it's the same for coders out there); once you open something up, you may as well fix everything related to the problem whilst you're there and tinkering away. So, I'm please to say not only does the nighttime look a million times better, all of my maps have scrolling clouds, twinkling stars and plants that blow in the wind! It's really brought my maps to life and I'm very pleased.

HOWEVER! It means I've had to re-map, recolour everything... Argh... what a pain... It's totally worth it but my goodness is it a lot of work.

I'm thinking I've put at least two months worth of work on top of my workload but again, what is the point of making this game if it's not going to be what I want it to be?

I get the whole notion of cutting your losses and not biting off more than you can chew; but at the same time, I haven't invested a million dollars into the game and have the pressure of a publisher asking for a completion date... I leave that to the professionals, this game is a passion project and made with love, not for gain.

Let me know what you think! Hopefully, once you finally get to play it you'll not notice the difference anyway lol. But still, it's good to share the great moments of my work and also the not-so-great moments here too.

I hope you're well and having a good time with whatever is your own personal passion, we need to have projects and things to do like this to keep us sane, especially right now...

Love
Steven

Thats why you gotta plan them out first, at least for the basic things like scrolling clouds or animated stars. And if you want to have things such as day and night cycle, better use a proper plugin or plan it out hansomely firshand. Preproduction always plays a big role in any projects or else you will gotta rework a lot of things and its a waste. Anyway, i really like your dedication to the project. You have heart and i can feel it. Keep it up. And btw if you can make the game cuter as i suggested before that'd be even more awesome ;b Looking foward to the cutenessy

Yes, that’s the lesson learned. I had planned it out in terms of the system, no plugin for it... but the graphics were a big over sight for sure. Still, all it well now! I’m still recoloring though so this will set me back! Thanks and hope you’re well :)

This game looks so adorably awesome!! It's not common to see a RPG Maker game that uses hand-drawn graphics.

Damn! I really love the artstyle! The house customization mechanic seems pretty impressive as well.
I'm curious though, how did you even manage to get rpgmaker to look like that? It can't just be pixel sprites can it?

RPG Maker games don't have to be pixel sprites and backgrounds. It can be any artstyle you want. Some of mine mix pixel characters on top of paintery backdrops.

Thanks soooo much. I use Procreate on IPad Pro and hand draw everything, then just adjust the images in gimp and put them in the IMG folder and it’s pretty much the same as the RTP. I use a ton of doodads though, and even the maps are made out of layers of doodads so they change depending on time of day, weather and season etc. thanks again :)

I just want to say that this looks incredible. Really lovely graphics, I get a very warm feeling from the aesthetic and concept you're going for. I'm keeping an eye out for this one.

The curse of retail: you get ideas, you want to make something with those ideas, but because you're always at friggin' work you can't actually do anything with them.

Sonic and All Stars Racing Transformed (geez... what a long name) is my favorite racing game, I've spended lots of hous leveling my characters, learning new techs and polishing my runs. My friends don't want to play with me anymore because I'm too good according to them :kaoeh:
