new/old RM user says hello

Hello,

i actually used the old RM2k during the days of Vampire's Dawn, inspired by playing a lot of great games like Unterwegs in Düsterburg (german), the Switch/Alternate trilogy (also german) and Velsarbor. I never finished a game, though, since i lost interest at one point.

Now, after learning proper programming (Java, C++, Perl) and earning my own money with it, i opted to buy VX Ace from Steam to play around with the Script system. I first tried to create a keyboard/mouse controlled ABS utilizing pixel movement, sprite projectiles and collision detection based on region ids for static objects. That worked actually pretty fine, but i couldn't see myself playing with that system for too long and didn't really want to work with all those vectors and radiants needed to create more complex behaviour, so i scratched it and am now trying to reproduce the FF-X feeling by utilizing YanFly's Scripts and Yami's CATB.

One note though, i'm horrible at drawing. I achieve decent success by taking existing sprites and combining them in GIMP (used over PS not for money reasons, but because i used it for years and feel comfortable with it), though.

Maybe i'll manage to come up with a decent story so i can finally finish something this time. I much prefer steampunk / futuristic / cyberspace themes, though it seems to be quite hard to actually find resources for the latter one.

Aside from Makering, i also play GW2 in a small WvW guild (though i'm not very active currently, waiting for expansion), i like sushi, pasta and cacao...lots of cacao.

I consider Python and Java the best languages today, with C++ being the classic giant of course. 

Welcome aboard. :D   Let's celebrate your entry by making a few jokes that only a bunch of us will get.

PERL? :p  You speak loud Java code, everyone understands what is going on. All right. But PERL? You speak loud PERL and you summon Cthulu! :p :p :p

And it seems soon we will have to wear glasses. You see, we both don't C#! :p

Ok enough with my lame jokes; I wish to learn PERL and C# one day, it's two really respectful languages.

So will you make ABS? I am delighted to see what you will make.

A few suggestions from me:

A] There are already some ABS out there, and you could see what is right with them and what is wrong.

B] It seems that VX Ace uses another language (C++ probably) for the executable, that will run Ruby scripts. Thus you must always make sure to keep the code easy for the machine to run. RGSS3 is already not-so-well-made. Proof is Effectus, a fantastic script that lifts a lot of weight from VX Ace making performance issues significant less. I never saw the code YET, but I have seen How a game was working before and after Effectus. It was unplayable before Effectus and then it became fantastic.

C] Good Documentation

D] Separate configuration of script from the actual script if possible. ;)  

Being a dummy on graphics? Well... me too! :p

Oh, i actually liked Perl, as it allowed me to write lots of stuff in less code that nobody except me was able to understand :D To be fair, today i'm not even able to understand my own stuff anymore...

I'm still learning Ruby, as i kinda delved right into the code, consulting the API whenever i need something. "def ... end" seems kinda clunky to me compared the the usual {} brackets, but that's ok.

For now i shelfed the ABS and settled for the CATB / PCTB based on YanFly/Yami. It's easier to get started and gives me enough possibilities to create a complex game with it without having to calculate the velocity of every bullet (i wanted to make certain bullets recoil from walls, for skillshots and possible switch puzzles...the horror).

Well Ruby is very Python like and less Java like really.

It is Object Oriented of course, it has some strange things that you might love or hate, but it is also a very straightfoward language really. :D

I yet have to learn it, I am at a level that I can understand what I read, but I need some practice and a revision and learn a few more stuff to actually start writing my own snippests. ;)

Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
