So I'm new to RPG Maker as a whole. I have the trial version of RPG Maker MV (Which I'm loving) and I get to buy the actual product tomorrow. ^.^ I'm thinking that I want to buy it through steam however, though I downloaded the trial from the website itself. Anyone know any pros and cons between buying from the website and buying through Steam? I'm more comfortable with going through Steam because it'll go in with all of my past purchases and be saved with that account info so I don't have to worry as much about losing the licensing and such, but I was wondering if there are any significant differences I should be aware of.

Either way I'm really excited, I'm not big on programming, I can get the basics and follow some instructions but a program like this is perfect for someone with little to no programming experience such as myself who really wants to just get the stories/plots I've had out there. I'm currently working on a game right now as a learning process type deal obviously. I think it's going to come out somewhat decent and the story itself will be fun for people, I hope.

One of my biggest concerns though, is trying to do a credits scene at the end of it? I have some scripts I've found and am using, I will need to give credit for using but not sure how best to do that. As well as I have my brother who is going to be helping by writing the music and helping with artwork who I want to credit as well. If anyone has any advice or links to any videos that goes over how to make a good credits scene for the end of a game or some such it would be much appreciated.

^_^

Hi and welcome! :)

What you get on Steam and what you get on the website are the same versions. If you buy from the website, your purchase details will be registered against your account and you'll be able to reactivate if you get a new computer. You will also be able to use your key on steam. It does not work the same the other way though - if you buy on steam you will not be able to use your steam key to activate the website/standalone version.

The contents are the same.

Updates on steam will be automatic, but we have more control over updates on the site - it's possible that updates on the website might be available before they're available on Steam (once we submit them, we're at Steam's mercy as to when they get released).

If you're more comfortable going through Steam, go through Steam.

Please use the other forums for asking for help with how to do stuff in the game (like credits). This forum is for intro chat only :)

HI there :) Welcome to the community! As someone who has both RMW and Steam versions of MV, I think there's little difference other than the Steam version automatically downloads the Wednesday freebies into the dlc folder (usually a day later ie Thursday/Friday). I imagine the patches and fixes will also be automated through Steam. Edit: Ninja'd by Shaz!

For my first game, I did a very simple yet I thought neat credits scene at the end of it, all just using a picture and the event editor. The event editor is a very powerful tool and can achieve lots of things without scripts. Anyway, happy to have you :)

Thank you for the response. And yeah, I just threw that question in there cause I was doing the post. Figured why not, I'll be doing more digging on that subject as time grows closer to the completion of the current project. Thank you for your take on what differences there might be on the versions. It gives me a little to mull over while I have to wait for tomorrow to come.

Welcome to the group!

The Steam version is required to buy any DLC through Steam, and any DLC bought through Steam will be in a separate folder in the game's folder where Steam is installed so getting to it can be a bit difficult unless you add a shortcut to your desktop. Also, any DLC acquired elsewhere will have to be kept outside of the Steam folder or when Steam updates it will get erased. Anything actually in your project's folders though are safe from that.

Don't forget, aspiring writers: Personality isn't what your characters do, it is WHY they do it.
Hello! I would like to know if there are any pluggings or any way to customize how battles look?
I was thinking that when you start the battle for it to appear the eyes of your characters and opponents sorta like Ace Attorney.
Sadly I don't know how that would be possible so I would be needing help! If you can help me in any way I would really apreciate it!
