As a fair few of you guys tried out Chapter 1 of the game, I want to post about the development of Chapter 2!

Nina Aquila returns in Legal Eagle Chapter II: "Broken Wings"!

Synopsis:

Nina Aquila: Legal Eagle is a series of anime-themed graphic adventure games, in which you play the role of a defence attorney. Fledge City is in crisis, and it's up to Nina Aquila and her friends to make sure justice prevails!

This is Chapter 2 of the "NALE" story, following on from the completed Chapter 1, which started life as a proof-of-concept demo to see if it was possible to effectively create a game with a similar feel to the Ace Attorney series in RPG Maker MV.

Whereas the first chapter was mainly a series of connected cut-scenes, with a middle part that formed a day in court, this second chapter is the first "full" case. Features include...
  • A full case, including 6 in-game days of content
  • Exploring locations to speak to witnesses and uncover evidence to use in the trial
  • Navigating a Mode7-style overworld to visit the different areas of Fledge City
  • Playing Dragon Fantasy Arena, a card-game-themed battle system unique to the world of NALE
  • Defending your client in court using the evidence gathered
NALE takes place in a fictional setting where many of the common anime tropes exist within one universe. Each case will focus on different genre, in a manner that mixes homage and parody. Chapter 2 is based upon shounen "collect-and-battle" anime, like Yugioh or Gundam: Build Fighters. Here's the blurb:

Several weeks have passed since the events of Nina Aquila: Legal Eagle, and Nina's life is in turmoil after a costly defeat in court. Her confidence shattered, Nina holes up in her office until a visitor comes to the door - one who believes that only she can help him.

A murder has been committed at the High Flyers Casino. The victim? A celebrity player of a trading card game, "Dragon Fantasy Arena", on the eve of the national tournament!

Who would commit murder over a children's card game? And why?

Surrounded by hot-blooded heroes and dastardly cosplaying villains, Nina will need all her cunning if she's to make the best of a bad draw... Or her client's going to be sent to the graveyard!

Looks very cool.
I really like the ability to run the game from your website too.

Thanks! However, that's only going to apply for the first chapter. I had to aggressively optimise the game to make that work, including actually ripping out a couple of locations! Admittedly, this forced me to reduce Chapter 1 down to purely the most fundamental parts, which makes it snappier - but that won't be possible for Chapters 2 and beyond.

The follow-up chapters have so much more in them - more locations, more music, more NPCs to speak to, places to explore, the city over-world... These are going to have to be download-only.

However, I'm happy with that. I still wanted Chapter 1 to be playable online because, as everyone knows, getting people to try a game for the first time is the hardest part. Hopefully if they enjoy it, they'll be more amenable to downloading the othe chapters.

I just finished the first chapter and it was fun. Quite refreshing, very different from what I'm used to see from RPG Maker games.

The fact that you had to reduce the game to its most fundamental parts is a good thing. The courtroom was plenty enough and I really enjoyed it thanks to these funny characters. There is a good use of the camera work and sound effects. Even though everything was static, those little tricks with the camera and sound made it intense enough.
As you say, the chapter 1 was like a tutorial anyway so you didn't need more than that. But I do think it is perfect like this.

I'm really looking forward to the other chapters of Nina Aquila ! Good luck !

Torn over a decision, so I thought I'd ask what you guys think.

I'm switching the OBJECTION! logic to use a bust image for Nina, but I'm torn over the size to use.

In the example below, the top image shows the pixellated head image I'm replacing, while the middle and bottom images are of two different options. Which do people prefer?

I like the last one better. Seeing more of her body. Nice drawing by the way.

I should add that I commissioned that image from an artist :kaoback: there's no way I could've drawn that!

Or use both. Bottom for minor Objection and Middle for when things REALLY require an Objection.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! In the end I went with the idea of having a smaller image and a larger one, for "major" and "minor" objections.

This week I've been working on the Duel Arena location:

This is going to form part of the setting for Chapter 2 - as the chapter takes place at a Yugioh-esque card-game tournament.

Very cool. Some quality work in the shading on that, and I really like the Elemental Breakdown being right there. (I'm not a big fan of Tutorials.)

Following the above sample, I've managed to "seat" it in the arena location. It needs a few tweaks, but broadly I'm happy with how it looks:

The lighting will be dynamic, in that when you're normally here and walking around, the lighting is quite "flat". This lighting only comes in when the actual duels occur.

I'm sure the latest post/thread in the sidebar used to have 5 posts. Was it always been like this?

Made it to the 10th video doing this! :kaocry:

Made the "My Beating Mystery" board today:
3ENFLSC.png

in Grim Trigger episodes 3 & 4, the main characters play a Clue rip-off board game called "My Beating Mystery" (haha), so of course I had to draw the board for it. Can't decide if I wanna add blood or not
Jeez...
I finally decide, after several ppl asking me to, to create a gamethread about project M... And my internet craps out on me halfway through the process :(
making my first game is like trying to stuff all my experience with old games into one
so its slow and painful when i dont get it right... i bet the next game is gonna be finished earlier!
