So.. I am curious..
Would YOU play an RPG that didn't have any Music at all, but it did however use Sound Effects to create an atmosphere?
I find music in video games obnoxious. Especially in many RPGs since they reuse the same tracks sometimes for Dungeons, Battle, Victory, and so on. Typically when I play a game, I turn the Music off (if it's an option.. if it's not, I play on silence), but sometimes I feel like I could be missing out on some immersion if there were atmospheric Sound Effects.
Think about it like this:
Load up a new RPG, there's Music for the Title Screen.
The Music, and screen, fades away as the game begins.
Sounds of water droplets on the black screen.
As the screen fades in, a subtle windy gust is softly heard.
We see our Hero now knocked out on the ground of a beach cave.
The Music never returns, but each area/scene has different Sound Effects to provide an atmosphere..
The forests could have birds chirping.. rustling of branches.
The Cellar of the Pub could have muffled conversations or laughs, and the sound of feet above.
So.. I am curious..
Is Music necessary for you to enjoy your RPGs? Do you think Sound Effects could be a valid substitute for Music?
Thanks!
