A lot of us are stuck at home, no travel, limited outside entertainment... it's the perfect time to make a game to take our minds off some of the other things going on in the world. This event will have two parts, the No Travel Game Jam, and the No Travel Play Jam! Let's take a closer look at each.

No Travel Game Jam
Deadline: End of April! GMT will be used for cutoff.
Engine: Any RPG Maker or VNM
Restrictions: Entire Game must take place in ONE village/town/city. All locations must be within the bounds of the town. (Dungeons can be things like abandoned factories, mansions, sewers, etc.)

With all of us staying home, it's time to brush up on those town mapping skills. All travel is banned!

Make a game using the restrictions and engines above. The game should be 30 minutes to 1 hour. This isn't hard rule, just try to hit an easy one sitting playtime. This event is Non-competitive! Everyone can and should participate, regardless of skill level. The joy is in finishing a project, you don't have to be the best. Learn and grow as a game dev by just finishing something.

Reward: All Participants who finish a game for the Jam will get a No Travel Dev Badge.
Special: Each Moderator/Admin can give a No Travel Special Badge to a game of their choice. This isn't a "best game" award, but celebrates something about the game they picked that they like. Examples, things like "Quirkiest Character" or "3 Cuils" (these are not necessarily ones that will be used, just examples!)

No Travel Play Jam
Deadline: End of May! GMT will be used for cutoff

Play and write reviews for games from the No Travel Game Jam! Reviews should take up to the first hour of gameplay into account. Tell the dev what you liked, what you didn't, and how you think the game should be improved! Remember, constructive criticism is the name of the game. Make sure that your review is giving actionable advice. Each review should be at least 300 words. Really give them something they can work with to make their game better!

Reward: Anyone who reviews at least 3 games from the jam will get the No Travel Review Badge!

To submit your project, post a link to it in this thread: LINK

That sounds kinda fun. Might just do it.

Hmm... might do a pandemic game that's NOT a zombie apocalypse. Hmm...

I am fascinated. Might be just the thing to kick me out of a writers block, too.

Wow. This seems like a great idea! If I have time (my job is "essential" - go figure), I'll participate. We all should, because sometimes - brightening spirits can help people through a crisis.

I want to either create a backstory game for a character, or I want to create a small romance game with multiple romance options...hmm...

I've been wanting to finish a short game, so this is perfect!
Hopefully it'll be enough motivation to finish something. :kaopride:

Question: I am working on a sequel/full length version of a game I completed. I doubt I will get the entire game done, but can have up to an hour of gameplay in a demo. Will this be allowed or should I do a different idea?

Sure why not.
For clarity, what would be the max number of people allowed to make a game for this challenge? 2, 5, 10?

Also, are flashbacks that do not take place in town allowed?

It's really about creating a finished game, rather than a demo. Finishing games is a skill that people need to hone.

1. A reasonable amount? 4 sounds like a good number. Over that it starts getting weird for handing out badges for one game.

2. I'm going to say yes, as long as the flashbacks are SOLELY cutscene and with no gameplay. It is very borderline though, so it shouldn't be used much. (Basically if it is being used to replace a character describing events that happened, its fine, if you actually get to control the character at all, it isn't).

"Operator, hello?

Yes, I'd like to inform the president that it's time to break open my old copy of RPG Maker. Can you patch me in?

He's endorsing my game? Perfect. See you all in a month with that finished product."

This is the 'quality' of writing you will get to 'enjoy'. Excited to join in!

Sounds cool, look like the other islands will have to wait for now since Entire Game must take place in ONE village/town/city.

If we live stream games from the jam, and give comments while doing so, will this count as a review?

THE GAME AWARDS AHHHHHH!!!!!
I kept saying I suck at writing stories. But I can't believe I wrote one these days. Feels good now that the winged blonde girl I often share has an actual lore and plot going.
Huge breakthrough! I finally fixed the dimensions on the WEBM used in the cinematic that ends the demo and introductory segment in MC:RIS, around the one-minute mark:

(There's some audio desync because the capture is an MP4.)
Kudos to everyone making game jam games, because this month has been hell for my development time. I have made a cutscene, 2 sprites, and 1 tile.

I guess I've made conceptual progress in hammering out combat roles and having fixes to be implemented (though I haven't done that yet)
