In my current game, all of the main characters are undead (Lich and the likes).  Since they're undead, I can't imagine a Healing potion which restores a living character's vitality would work on them.

So, what I'm doing instead is this:

  • All party members start each battle with full HP and MP.  Since I do this, even my random encounters will merrily chomp down almost all of a party member's HP.  Boss battles do have somewhat more HP, but mainly the party needs to use smart tactics (i.e. Mute the Guardian who can use a powerful Healing Song)
  • During battle, all party members can heal (themselves) by pulling life force from the living (HP Drain attacks).  Obviously not ALL opponents are vulnerable to this, so the Dark Priest can add hitpoint regeneration, say 5% or so.  Since the opponents can normally do 25% or more of HP damage per round, this is still a race of attrition against the opponents
  • The Dark Priest can return an undead to their unlife --- BUT when characters are revived, they are weak for 2 rounds (Resurrection Sickness) which strongly discourages relying on this mechanic except as a desperate measure
Does this seem like a good idea?  Or is it too difficult for players?

And are there any other creative healing methods that would make sense for undead?

Or should I just revert to the classic "Heal potions and spells, you'd better manage HP/MP yourself, Inns recover everything" mechanic?

I just figured it would make far more sense to have very atypical healing methods for undead.

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
