Nostalgia: that very personal sense of belonging or holding onto something that makes you think it's awesome because you liked it when you were a kid. This doesn't escape video games either, and specially not RPGs.
Over the last few months I've been replaying some of the RPGs I've liked since I can remember (FFs, Xenogears, Vagrant Story, etc). And I discovered some interesting things about nostalgia, namely that it can disappear after years.
For example, while it was never my cup of tea, FFVI was something I used to respect (except for one dimensional villain clown guy) but I replayed it recently its mobile port and man it's... pretty bad actually. I shook my head and thought "Jesus, people fought/fight online over this game?".
Coincidentially, a game that I thought it was just "ok" back in the day (Chrono Cross) was surprisingly refreshing and has now become one of my favorite Square games.
So, have you played something recently that surprised you because you used to love and now you see it for the things others said about it?
