I installed Windows 10 today, and everything works fine when it comes to Ace except for one thing: when playing a game full screen using Alt+Enter, the screen will flicker intermittently. To show you exactly how it looks, it also appeared on the screen recording I did:

Note: This only happens in RPG Maker VX Ace. Not in any other software (or game). RPG Maker XP runs fine in fullscreen, for example.

Things I've tried with no effect:

  • Completely blank project with no scripts. (The video is of my project, but the visual effect is the same).
  • Turning off Game DVR in the XBOX application settings.
  • Making sure my drivers were up-to-date. (I have an nVidia GPU)
  • I have made sure my GPU is healthy, and ran heat and fan tests on it.
In window mode everything is all fine and dandy.

In case it might be useful for debugging I saved the DxDiag report that lists my hardware specifications: http://pastebin.com/C7UpWhww

I tried myself and no bug expected from my laptop and I have both nividia and intel graphics card drivers in it.

for what I see I thinks it's either a window 10 bugs or a driver incompatibilities with rm :o

(I don't updated my graphics cards with window 10 version )

For me it happens immediately, that is to say as often as you see in the video, constantly. Title screen, map, doesn't matter. I have made sure my GPU isn't dying or anything, too :p

Is disabling the full screen keybind an option? Or is it more for your own sanity that you want a real fix? :p

No, I definitely have to let people play full screen if they want. And a real fix is needed if this is not an outlier problem, but something that can happen to more people depending on the cause :)

Does it do it in a brand new project with no scripts?

Does it happens in other games (not RM)? Maybe something is wrong with GPU or some drivers...

That's really weird, when I would see that on my monitor I would freak out ~ RM fried my GPU once. [REALLY TRUE STORY] - I played many heavier games and I never had any problems ~ played a RM game - GPU fried completely. WUT?

PS

Yes. I listed that among the things I tried without success :)

No it doesn't happen in any other games or software. Not RPG Maker XP, either. Since Ace uses software rendering based on the CPU, I am absolutely certain it's not the GPU. Just to be sure I ran directx diagnostics and a heat stress test on it to check its fan health, and all is good.

Edit: I was wrong about the GPU here, and later had a facepalm moment; even if Ace uses the CPU for rendering, fullscreen with resolution change still forces certain GPU features on, and this is likely where the driver bugs (mentioned further down) pop in, hence why it works in window mode.

So it only happens in Ace...hmm... ~

Okay, since I can't see that on your list - have you tried to completely uninstall and install back the whole program?

Perhaps the program broke during windows update (some files changed or something), who knows? Try to install a fresh one.

I registered to let you know that this problem seems to be tied to the NVIDIA display driver bug.

I am using Windows 8.1 x64 and the latest NVIDIA driver which does not have flickering is 347.52 WHQL.

I have upgraded to Windows 10 (and reverted back to Windows 8.1 after two days) and the same problem exists in Windows 10 driver. Unfortunately, Windows 10 does not have 347.52 version so you can't do anything about it.

I have reported this to NVIDIA using driver feedback form and also posted this in Windows 10 driver thread but so far nothing has changed. Maybe if developers of RPG Maker pestered them they would fix this regression.

Hey man. I've been experiencing the same on my desktop, using Windows 10 Pro. Runs fine on my Windows 10 Home laptop, though.
One thing that I have noticed is that changing my display from 144hz down to 60hz slowed the flickering down dramatically, but not completely.

I just gave up on it and kept windowed mode on. :p

And by "runs fine on my Windows 10 Home laptop" you mean what? Which video card you have in laptop and which one in your desktop?

This is already known to affect NVIDIA only and only drivers after 347.52.

If your laptop has Intel GPU or even Optimus and you use Intel GPU to play RPG Maker games you won't have any problems. Same with AMD.

We already got down to the Nvidia cards being the problem, I thought that much was obvious. (It even says Nvidia bug in the title)

I merely brought up that it could have been down to different versions of windows 10, or even running at anything above 60hz.

And I'm just here to report that for some reason or another that the flicker has gone from my desktop. Unsure if there was any windows updates today, but my graphics driver version is the same.

Well as I said, I have this issue in Windows 8.1 with all NVIDIA drivers past 347.52 so it most definitely cannot be down to different versions of Windows 10.

How can the flicker be gone on it's own? Driver has not been updated for sure. As for Windows updates, you could check the list of updates installed and let us know.

Use fullscreen++ for better fullscreen.

On both my windows 8 and windows 7 desktop and laptop computers rpg maker vx's standard fullscreen is impossible to use.

Ace's fullscreen seriously needs an overhaul. Hope this happens with the new version.

There are problems with fullscreen++, one of them being mouse scripts. It is a workaround viable for many games, but not everyone.

My mouse script (not yet released the update) hooks the window mouse messages, so I dont think that would be an issue with fullscreen++ :D

Edit: on second thoughts, it might, due to how fs++ works (with it not properly resizing, but stretching the window). :/

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
Can someone recommend some fun story-heavy RPGs to me? Coming up with good gameplay is a nightmare! I was thinking of making some gameplay platforming-based, but that doesn't work well in RPG form*. I also was thinking of removing battles, but that would be too much like OneShot. I don't even know how to make good puzzles!
one bad plugin combo later and one of my followers is moonwalking off the screen on his own... I didn't even more yet on the new map lol.
time for a new avatar :)
