Ah ha ha! Not missing an arm, no. It was supposed to be behind her back but her headdress thing was confusing me. I may make her lean slightly forward to make it look a bit more like her arms are behind her.
@HexMozart88 If its supposed to be behind her back, I'd probably draw the outer half of the arm so it was showing and have only part of the arm obscured by the back. She could even have that arm sort of bent behind her back so that she's using her hand to grasp her wrist/forearm on the other arm.
I've been off taking care of RL obligations (still). Probably will be able to return to the game Thursday - Saturday for a while though, if all goes well. Since I'm a few pages behind, I'll just say congrats on your progress!
10.5 Update: Managed to figure out some of my game world's lore in more detail. I always had the timeline figured out of how it got here, but the little details were missing. Not sure if I'll add it into the game for the player to find yet.
@Vox Novus Well, if we go by Neo Exdeath as a model for such monstrosities, it could also be the amalgamation of numerous demon souls... or chaos incarnate, wielding the awesome power of the Void! At least, that was the inspiration.
But yeah... white magic... black magic... physical skills... breath attacks... status ailments...
@Arithmetician Ah, FFV! Honestly one of my personal favorites (gameplay wise).
Anyways, time for my own personal spiel. (Wait, it's already October..?)
Last Month's Goals
I updated to 1.3.1 pretty early on, and everything works great now! That's a plus!
I fulfilled my goal to develop the tile set a bit more, now I have some decent-ish sidewalks and streets.
As for the reward for memories, well it's not too big of a deal that I didn't do it now.
But all of that aside, I got a LOT done this past month! For one, I figured out a good way of modifying the battle system to be more text-based. (It was something I've wanted to do, but only recently learned how to do properly.)
I also implemented a "Psychoshift" system. To sum it up, by pressing the "C" key, the player can explore the Collective Unconscious of the world around them, where they can read NPC's thoughts, find hidden items. But one danger is running into enemies (which are normally absent).
I also spontaneously composed the main "overworld/town" theme. It's pretty decent considering my skills, but sounds incomplete. Sadly, since I don't own FLStudio yet, I can't finish it...
Overall a good month, and I feel confident that all of the basics are in place, so now I can start developing the game! (Opposed to just making systems and interfaces and what-not.)
This Month's Goals
Compose one more song! Not sure for what, but I'll figure out something.
Finish Diagonal graphics for the first three main characters. (Almost done with this.)
And the most ambitious part of this: Finish the Prologue! (Which consists of one Resonating Memory which is kind of like a dungeon, a few more maps, and a scene on a hilltop.)
@Vox NovusYou are probably right... grrrrr... I have to retain myself.
@bgillispHey I'll pray for you man! Hope all goes well for you.
No news from the person who asked for the dragon. ( All right... enough panicking for the last past 72hours. Will make the rear layers of wings awaiting if the deep blue I used count as a black (because... we all know that at a certain amount of dark it will blend with everything but we don't want to loose that of a big sprite totally in the dark.)
Only a short post, haven't done much. But after @Sharm's great advice (thanks btw!), I went back and did numerous sketches of various faces (even took inspiration from some animals – my favourite is a goat-inspired one, that look of utter self confidence fits so nicely – but none quite worked) and on the next day, I had the idea of going back collecting some reference material to tackle Salin even more differently. Next step is to go through the newly-gathered collection of 16th century Italian fashion and Landsknecht "armour" and sketch even more. I don't quite know when, though, as the paperwork and preparations for the move are pretty chaotic right now.
And getting lucky with the RNG, I was sidetracked by playing Path of Exile again.
From the 07th October:
So quiet, so I just edit my bit of progress in.
Didn't get to sketching yet but since I'll most certainly be out of internet from probably the 25th onward, I started collecting reference material for the first actual area of the game. Need to do some world building, but there's a 8-10 hour train trip (date not sure yet) in my near future, those are great for doing story stuff.
@Chiara: Those long train rides are good for doing side stuff, aren't they?
@Marquise*: Maybe they're in the path of that hurricane hitting the SE?
@AnotherMage: I'm curious...why a text based battle system?
10.6 Update: Managed to tweak events up to the Magi Tower sequence, and rebalanced the monsters in that part of the game some. Also played around more with lighting, figured out why it was driving my insane, as it seems the tile you put an event on is the bottom center of the event, not the exact center of the event. No wonder my lights were off by 1 - 2 tiles!
I like the idea, actually. It's like Dungeons and Dragons, just with graphics. From the screenshot, it does look rather like the normal. And I know the normal does have quite a bit of text in it. So how did you add more text?
@bgillisp The reason I'm going with it is a combination of personal preference, and for some future ideas in my project. There's a lot of text heavy "boss" fights, in combination with a certain system I'm including (using "Memories" in said "boss" fights). That, and I find it much easier to be creative through text rather than attempting to do animations (which I suck at, so another reason.) Not that there aren't any animations, just more focus on creative descriptions.
@HexMozart88 I added the text using Yanfly's Action Sequence plugin thingys. I removed almost all of the normal battle log, and just added in text code using the eval function. Here's the specific text I used if you're curious. (Also, I have the window as transparent; I'm using a ScreenHud with Mog's Battle Hud as the window.)
I originally was trying to include EVERYTHING through this text, but I left out stuff like damage output, criticals, and the such.
As for DOODLE (the Stickman)...honestly that's the extent of my artistic capabilities. Right now it's a placeholder. (You could probably tell, but a lot of the game looks a bit like this quality. So there aren't going to be any outstanding graphics.)
@AnotherMage That psychoshift function sounds nice, let's the player get ready for battle before going in and gives it a cool persona vibe in my opinion.
@Chiara Books for referencing stuff like that are absolutely invaluable. The train ride sounds like a doozy, hope you can at least get a lot done.
@bgillisp Honestly, that would drive me bonkers, I haven't tried messing with lighting effect stuff really mostly out of personal preference but that would definitely be another frustration in trying to use it.
@HexMozart88 The drawing is definitely better with that other arm visible.
@Marquise* The amount of detail people can pack into sprites amazes me sometimes.
Update 10/8:
Gotten through setting up the enemies for the third part of the game and did one playtest run through. Haven't decided if I'm going straight to setting up the boss for the area or give it one more playtest. The area seems a little more difficult initially than the previous two parts of the game so I'm wondering if I should tone some stuff down or adjust enemy skill usages, etc ...
edit-play tested again and did some stat and encounter step adjusting; plays much better now. Going to go forward with setting up the boss and finishing the area.
@Vampire Vox: Believe me, it did. It was a little of the reason for no update a couple days too, as I had nothing to say as I'd been fiddling with the lights for the entire day.
10.7 Update: Fixed up the scene in the Magi tower until the party meets up. From here I don't think there's much more to 'fix' dialogue wise, as I like most of the dialogue from the 1 hour point on (which is about when the party meets up). Just had to tweak and fix a few scenes/lines that didn't make much sense or felt out of character in the early game, like say (demo spoiler):
Why did the monsters escape 2x in two days? That always felt a little off to me and I'm sure I'm not the only one.
10.8 Update: Edited the monsters in the next part of the game, as well as the 2nd boss of the game. Only got the last dungeon and the final boss of Chapter 1 to edit and then it's balanced at least. Just have to readd the NPC's to the maps, as I took them off for now.
@bgillisp You right. I stay unstick to news theses days. Not lack of compassion... just... well I am already fiddling with too many troubles already. (I think/hope my kitties will be fine for the month. Gah... Mister Cat learned Daughter cat to steal food... Now I have to watch her from stealing HIS food!)
@Vampire VoxYeah. Pixel by pixel like a mosaic... except my mosaics have to be triple wide the $Big_Monsters ! I made the scales on the dragon to be certain I got it right.
Well seems I have the go to pursue the dragon and so far I got 7 masks drying in the kitchen... and uh... well... I might have a non-vampiric new invasion. :X They are eating up bed bugs but nobody likes them in the kitchen!
Replace placeholder dialogue and make the NPCs seem less generic (have them move around, play etc)
Get some custom tilesets designed and done
Collect feedback
What I have accomplished thus far. Implementing it into the game and making it look good was a bigger hassle than I thought but at least the goal is reached.
Well, so much for my resolution to post here more often. Life has been somewhat trying.
@Vampire Vox You say nothing really fancy with your skills, but that healing cycle sounds like it would be interesting to play. 'Fancy' doesn't always equal 'Better'. Character flying on a broom? You must find a way of showing us in motion, sounds such fun.
@Sharm I like that you're working on Tiny World. I haven't used it myself, but from what I've seen of it, it looks lovely.
@J-Ray I do not want to meet that character in a dark alley. Pink pom-poms on the shoes are clearly a cunning device to lure the unwary to their doom.
@Arithmetician I continue to be impressed by the amount you're getting through. I love that mashed up monster, looks truly terrifying to meet. (Maybe, though, you could borrow J-Ray's idea of pink pom-poms?)
@Psykofreac Speaking purely personally, I'm not sure the empathy thing works quite the way you suggest for everyone. Yes, everyone has once been 14, but that's like saying everyone can empathize with all characters of their particular gender, because it is a deeply shared experience. I have never enjoyed playing a character that young, I don't find it immersive, and generally the young teen is given wisdom/strength/skills/knowledge way beyond their years and can do stuff that no adult in the game can. So it's not really a young teen anyway. I do stress that this is my personal opinion, and I am in no way suggesting that you don't do it.
@Marquise* I've seen plenty of animated gifs on the forum. Sadly I have no idea how to do it.
@AceOfAces_Mod I've had that problem, beefed things up and then found that all opponents are slaughtered and had to go back and take them back down again.
@AnotherMage That's a great deal of progress. Congrats. Will you be able to get FLStudio in time for this game?
@Chiara I hope the preparations for the move are not too tiring. I know what moving is like, I've done quite a bit, and it can wear you out.
@bgillisp I remember my own relief when I worked out the reason why my lights were off. Hope the book is nearly out of the way. Does all this work mean that there's a new demo coming out? Or are you not going to bother with another one?
My update
Lost a couple of days of RM time due to Microsoft. Details in spoiler, as it is a bit of an irrelevant rant.
Without asking me, Microsoft decided that the thing I most wanted in life was to upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 10. My laptop was unusable for a couple of hours while it did its download and install routine. I then had to go in and disable all the things that I could, like Cortana, their tracking of what I write etc. etc. The the next day, there were a load more downloads, same time lost, and had to disable/get rid of all the same things all over again.
My basic position is that I own my computer, I do not hire it from Microsoft and I should be the one to decide what apps run on it and what do not. Because you can only disable and not delete a lot of this stuff e.g. Cortana, they are still running in the background, slowing things down, and I am just furious at their cavalier attitude which assumes (incorrectly) that they know what I want better than I know myself.
End of greatly toned down rant.
Did some mapping, but my big work has been editing tiles to do things they were never made to do. I found some nice cliffs, (wrong colour, but that was easily changed) but they don't tile, so I've been working on that. After all, who wants cliffs that are only 4 x 4? I want lines of cliffs. I also wanted them with a 'void' as it's for underground. I'll put my test map in a spoiler. There is still loads to do to make them seamless, I haven't even started to make the 'corner' connecting pieces, but this gives an idea. I've also got my animated water for that set done, but at the moment I think it is too bright.
I spent most of today sorting out a strange bug, but now done, so feel relieved about that.
@bgillisp seems like you've made some progress. Nice!
@ksjp17 so glad my laptop has Windows 10 pre-installed. XD And that map looks nice.
New update: Made my main character yesterday, and finished my knight character. Next, I should probably do my mage character. Three down, three to go. (as far as actual important characters. Random map NPC's and shopkeepers are a whole other matter.
-Finally made the patcher to work properly. I had to pack it up with Enigma VirtualBox however, since I had more than just the zip file with the update files. Here's how it works:
-Still working on the formulas. I have an idea of scaling the upgrades. I know the necessary numbers, now to build the correct function.
-Finished part of the code for the hp bars to show different color (according to the current hp). I am doing something similar done to the HP text. Now to integrate it to the drawing code. I also need to figure out how Luna Engine draws the HP bars.
Yikes! I suggest you set active hours (if the PC was upgraded to the Anniversary Update) on the Windows Update settings. This will prevent Windows 10 from installing updates when you are working on your projects. Also, (assuming you've upgraded form Pro or Ultimate) enable Defer Updates. I could explain how to roll back to Windows 7 without the need to reinstall it but I'm not sure if you can at this point (since you might have updated to the latest build).
@Canini Nice job, that's still some good work there.
@AceOfAces_Mod That looks really awesome, patching made easy!
@HexMozart88 Artwork you mean? Going to share some more pics at all
@bgillisp Somehow I always seem to find something I'm unhappy with dialogue wise while playtesting and still stuff usually slips through the cracks. That line sounds like a setup for a joke "Why did the monster escape 2x in two days?" "I don't know, why?" "[Insert Punch Line here!]"
@ksjp17 Good point, I just meant it wasn't that complicated in actual function to implement. I had a Global studies teacher in middle school that would always promote the use of K.I.S.S. Keep it simple stupid! Sometimes a nicely working clean simple idea goes a long way. Also, request granted! (Shows some battle gameplay as well; at this point my characters have gone through the area and already gotten the best gear so they are more powerful than they would be at the start of it).
Update: 10/9
Finished adding in and playtesting the boss for part 3; it can do a heavy amount of damage but for some reason I feel the fight is easy. Might leave it for now and see how external playtesters feel after development is complete and ready for beta testing. Will move on to part 4 tomorrow which will be different in scope because it starts out early on with a major boss encounter. Of course before I do that I need to database a bunch of stuff like new skills, animations, stat boosts for next character ranks so I'm not sure I'll actually get to the fight tomorrow. Oh and then of course some mapping to...
I may. These ones don't look as good as the priestess, though (almost spelled priestess with a capital "p" because that's how it's spelled in my game, lol). A little more cartoony (that's a word, right?), especially the knight. Perhaps tomorrow, I'll share
i can't wait to drink some ice after struggling with my illness in 9 days. 9 days is really bad for me,i can't focus with my shop and even can't do something with my project
