Oculus is an episodic sci-fi roleplaying game (RPG) emphasizing exploration and interactions between the player and the game's world.
The Oculus is a piece of technology discovered on Mars, granting mankind the ability to quickly travel through space and time. Using this, the Human Systems Alliance (HSA) has spread throughout the galaxy, colonizing new worlds and when necessary, abandoning dying ones. That was three centuries ago. Now, we share the vast reaches of our galaxy with our neighbors, the Varanasi. Driven by an internal desire to discover what else is out there, Earth has called for volunteers to undertake a risky mission, one that will take you far from home.
Features: These features without a doubt are included in the game, and will be available during the initial release.
- Free episodic content with an episode being released every other month, and with five episodes in total being planned.
- Explore the galaxy and land on planets with varying climates. Visit remote listening outposts, underground laboratories, and even venture out into deep space where law enforcing agencies have no presence.
- An engaging, fully interactive story.
- A colorful cast of characters with personalities ranging from charming, to quirky, to crass.
- Music tracks ranging from uplifting, to retro, to melancholy.
- Humor.
Planned Features: If I have the time and know-how, I'll try to implement a morality system, crafting, and augmentations.
- Morality system where the decisions you make alter your character's personality, appearance, and dialogue during certain story events.
- Ability to craft items, weapons, and armor from resources mined from asteroids.
- Ability to augment the entire party, drastically changing their stats.
Characters:
More characters are to come, but these are the main four protagonists so far.
James T. Lever
Age 23
Space Marine
James T. Lever was born on Earth and grew up within the slums of Vancouver. From an early age, he turned to petty theft to support his beleaguered mother and alcoholic father. One of James' earliest encounters with the law occurred when he was twelve, after he picked the pockets of a wealthy bureaucrat. After that, he focused more on school and graduated at the age of seventeen. One year later, James enlisted with the HSA and was sent on a special "volunteer" mission that took him far away from Earth, to the outer reaches of space. During one of his missions, he disobeyed his commanding officer, resulting in him being sent to Tiberius Station, a place where nothing seemingly interesting ever happens, or ever will.
Miranda S. Gosling
Age 25
Pilot
Miranda S. Gosling was born on a rim-world far from HSA space. Her parents were wealthy traders who invested into a booming colony, and who then decided to settle down and start a family. From an early age, Miranda was always found experimenting with parts and fixing her father's old motorcycle. After a pirate raid that left her friends and family deceased, she escaped on a vessel returning to Earth. The crowd Miranda was with, however, held loose morals, and she refuses to talk about what really happened on her trip back to Earth.
Echelon
Age 3
Combat AI
Echelon was built and designed by Armax Industries, the leading producer of combat AIs on Earth. It's currently unknown how he ended up being so protective of Miranda. Echelon has a knack for ignoring social protocol and being straight-forward. He's also a bit of a know-it-all.
Goll
Age 168
Warrior Monk
Goll was born on the Varanasi homeworld, Terus. Although a boy of only six, he was stripped from his family and sent to live within a secret monastery hidden away in the mountains. There, he trained rigorously to become in-tune with his spiritual side. He learned to fear no pain, to accept no weakness, to demonstrate no mercy. When he reached adulthood, he left the monastery to experience what he could of the galaxy. He has fought in many conflicts, including the Bunashi Incident of 2366, where the only war ever to occur between humans and the Varanasi took place. Goll is extremely silent, to the point where he may even ignore someone talking directly to him.
