Hello there. I'm RockSauron. My dream is to make RPG.

Unfortuantely, my talents do not lie in art or programming. I'm told I'm a pretty good writer and people say my stories are pretty good and I have a few I would love to make... the problem is, well, mostly art. I cannot make things look pretty. I do not have an eye for that. And people, myself included, do not enjoy looking at horribly done backgrounds. I could probably make other stuff, but not art. Even if I used the basic materials (which would probably jsut be cheap anyway), I have no eye for shadows or making things flow or whatever.

So, what can I do? Again, I write. Not that having a story idea means much in the long run but hey :p . I also organized a level project in LittlebigPlanet years ago, as well as having written a dating sim I'm not sure I can mention here and am currently writing the sequel. Some other guy's doing the art, so I'm free to just write and plan the story/ gameplay (as little as there is in that. It's a dating sim).

So what was i talking about? Oh yeah, I want to make RPG but am scared to start and self concious about my own abilities. I dunno if this time would be any different, but I just recently feeling that itch so yeah. Here I am. Hi.

Welcome to the community :) We all had to start somewhere, and the spoiler in my signature has links to some good guides and tutorials for beginners, if you're interested.

That being said, don't worry about failing, as long as you start something and keep at it. You're only limited by your imagination!

Thanks :p

Also, I remember I actually did something years ago... Maybe six or seven years ago? I have no idea if my link works and can't test it at the moment since I'm not at home, but if it does this is the link:

http://rapidshare.com/files/127436310/Vharley.exe.html

Not really much, but it was my first real project. If it's even still there, which it probably isn't. Probably was purged and is now lost forever. Niot that that is such a big deal :p

but yeah, kinda like the idea of working with other people... maybe like a tutor or soemthing, though that's probably too much to ask for.

also, I bought XP a while ago, and haven't bought VX Ace because expensive. I know it was on sale a few times, but I didn't buy it since I didn't know if I'd use it. Either way, don't know if it's worth buying VX Ace right away... I jsut dunno. Making games is daunting and frightening ;-;

Hello, RockSauron.

My advice about game making:   Don't bite off more than a small piece of the elephant at a time.  Making a game does take a lot of work, but if you think about it, there are a lot of little steps from start to finish.

Focus on each small step, one at a time.  And breathe deeply, relax and remember there's NO deadline here.

Also, there are excellent tutorials that show the basics.

If I were you, I'd do all of the tutorials on this site.  Then start by making a VERY SMALL game.  Let's say you start a party of two adventurers in a small town, and a High Priest just gave them a goblet to bring to the neighboring village.  Just use ONLY the resources which come with the game --- there are a lot of them to form a good starting point.

Yes, it is a small game, but will get your feet wet   And, as you become more confident, you can even start by expanding that little game into a bigger one --- well, on the way to the town, maybe they get kidnapped...

Best of luck!

Welcome to the group!

Hey, everyone has to start somewhere. Just take your time, experiment, ask questions, etc...

I usually keep a side project open that has no goal or story, just a place to randomly try new things until I know how to do them well without messing up an otherwise decent project.

Welcome aboard RockSauron, don't worry, everyone has their start, just don't be afraid, the community here will glad to help you =)

It's fine not to buy VXAce yet, XP has it's own advantages than VXAce, to be honest there's a comparison post made by TommyGun  for both programs, and XP is not losing with VXAce, both have their strength and weakness. Consider buy VXAce if your program is VX(but not mandatory), but for XP, it's fine I think.

Yeah... my problem is just that I have have little mental incentive/ drive to work on a game I myself wouldn't want to play... and anything I make now wouldn't be something I'd want to play.

That, and working by myself is just... I dunno, makes it scarier. I'm not sure if it'd help, but I always wanted to work with another "noob" or team of them in order to learn together. I really don't know, lol.

In any case, thank you all so much for the warm welcome :p

Fight your mental then.

Working for yourself may be scary, but it's all about passion, I myself create a game own my own which I do everything myself including script, graphic, music, and story, and the game is not a small game, I aim for 50 hours+ gameplay. The key to keep you standing is, do not burn out, do not push yourself to hard, a little progress in one day is enough, for example, I create 2 or 3 animation skill and I consider it a day. Don't create goal settings that is to hard to accomplish, what you need to remember is, we don't have a deadline, and it's our power.

What about try to work with me in a project, we're learning together then :) .

But it's up to you, if you interested just PM, you decide the story and the plot, I'll help the rest with what I can.

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
