Hi all,

I'm interested in purchasing the Old School Modern DLC because I really like the Earthbound visual style but I'm not 100% sure that I'm going to be completely happy with the default character designs and will probably want to create my own.  I searched for an Earthbound-like sprite editor but the only one I found looks like it runs in DOS.  I'm curious if there is a decent sprite generator out there that can do Earthbound like sprites OR if the Game Character Hub can create sprites that would blend well with the Old School Modern tilesets?  Essentially, I just want to make sure that if I buy the OSM tileset I will still have the ability to make character sprites that will fit in well.  Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I'm afraid there isn't anything that can just make Earthbound style sprites without putting time and effort into it. Your best choice is to get an sprite creator program (like Game Character Hub, which is a great program btw) and using one of the characters in the ODM as a template. You'll have to experiment on what looks good or not, but with enough time and practice you can make anything you want.

If you don't have Steam, you can try Graphics Gale as well.

Also, you can create your own "character generator" by using PSD files.

Regardless, as Uzuki mentioned, you will still need to use one of the OSM sprites as a template.

The second OSM pack adds on a lot of sprites, by the way. ^^

If it helps at all, Despain posted the template for the sprite in the announcement thread when the Old School Modern Tiles first came out.  It doesn't have any animation frames, apparently Despain did that separately for each sprite he created.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys.  I ended up getting the OSM sets and after looking at the character sprites I'm wondering if a Character Hub sprite would look all that out of place.  I might do some experimentation and see.

At some point I'd love to get into creating my own sprites in PS or a similar program but one thing at a time for now!  I guess I need to learn how to work VXAce better first:)

Best,
J

The Game Character Hub basically uses parts from XP and VX Ace. last I saw before it went fully commercial.

The creator may have added more generator parts since then.

You will be able to add your own character parts into the hub.

Apparently, the hub allows you to edit tilesets as well (I don't own it, so I can't confirm this).

Good luck, and have fun! ^^

It's pretty terrible for editing tilesets, it can but it's not made for it by any stretch of the imagination.  I recommend GCH for people who want a more flexible character generator than the one with Ace only without the randomization, but don't have the skills or want the hassle of doing the same sort of thing in an art program that supports layers.  For people comfortable with art programs it might not be worth it.  However, I believe that GCH is still being improved so it could end up being more than that in the near future.

Yeah, I'd love to find a program that's made for editing tilesets the same way GCH is made specifically for character design.  I know how to use photoshop but I don't have it on my computer because I just can't afford it right now.  I downloaded GIMP but I haven't had a chance to work with it too much yet.  Hopefully it won't be too different and I'll be able to pick it up rather easily.  I plan on learning how to make my own tiles and sprites eventually I just don't want to spread myself too thin at the beginning here.  Thanks again!

@littlegreenjason

I'm using the GIMP to make the Cyberspace tileset I'm working on right now.  I've never used Photoshop, but it looks similar to the screenshots I've seen of Photoshop, so it probably isn't a huge transition to working with GIMP.

It is a big transition going from say, Microsoft Paint to The GIMP though.  Make sure to download the GIMP's manual package as well, so you can view the built-in help.

I agree with whitesphere! GIMP isn't too much different from Photoshop. It even has a one-window layout option too.

Just like any new program, it'll take a little getting used to, but it's more or less the same.

Actually, he didn't.  I just checked the thread.  He couldn't because by that time, he was already banned from the forums for a while.  If he did, I'd like to see the link, please. ;)

I thought for sure it was there but I just checked too and can't find it.  I even went to his site to see if I could find it there and I can't.  Then I went through all the trouble of finding his banned account and searching through his posts to see if I could find it.  Nothing.  I'd question the existence of the base if I didn't actually have it right here on my computer.  I have no idea where I got it, all I know is that I remember seeing that and thinking "oh, I need to save that before I lose it".  Sorry to be misleading.

Hi all,

I've had the OSM tilesets for a while but I just now got around to trying to use them.  Unfortunately, I can't seem to load them properly.  I tried importing them via the resource manager but they just end up looking like different colored blocks and nothing like the preview.  I've heard about other people having trouble loading them into the program but I can't seem to find a decent solution.  Am I missing a step somewhere?

Thanks!

Littlegreenjason, this is called thread hijacking. You need to make your own thread if you want this answered.

I found this palette and base but it's posted by Nathanial B.

Personally I've been very slowly using GCH to franken sprite out a base and individual parts in the hopes of being able to sort of generate more OSM sprites.  I am not very good at spriting though and there's more than one base sprite making this difficult.

That's where it was! No wonder I couldn't find it, Nathanial posted it. Glad to know I'm not crazy.

I'm sorry I thought my question was relevant and wasn't aware that one could hijack their own thread:)

I'm not sure, but I think Sharm mistook you for a different user than the original poster, due to the way you posted earlier.

Could you upload a screenshot of your map editor, showing your problem?

Susan's right, sorry about that. We do prefer separate questions to be in separate threads though, it makes it easier for people searching for the answer to the same question.
