Game execution Issues? Try Firefox!

This tiny game is something like a tiny interactive horror story. We meet Ryan who stayed home all day and we learn why.

SOME MORE INFORMATION:
The game was created for the One Map Game Challenge.
Genral restrictions were:
  • You can only use 1 map.
  • You get only 10 events (total, combining map and common)
  • 10 variables max
  • 10 switches max
  • Plugins are allowed, but no plugins that are designed to work around these restrictions. Allowed engine: RPG Maker 2k/2k3/XP/VX/VX Ace/MV

I found that a little softcore for my taste so here are the restrictions I followed:

I shall use:
  • 1 Event
  • 1 Variable
  • 1 tileset
  • 1 picture file on the tileset
  • 1 actor
  • 1 class
  • 1 music piece (and split in two parts)
  • 1 sound FX
I shall set the project to have 1 but will never use:
  • 1 item
  • 1 state
  • 1 animation
  • 1 type (for all types)
  • 1 skills
  • 1 enemies
  • 1 weapons
  • 1 armour
  • 1 enemies
  • 1 troops
I shall use NO:
  • Switches.

For the game, a parallax map was made, using tiles, and actor graphics (doors).

I doubt that anyone would like to use any of the ambient pieces I made for this game.
It is one project with two instruments play, then two variations with solo instruments.
I mean it took me literally 10 minutes to make them and convert them to ogg.
In case though you wanna use any of them, ask me first.

Some personal comments on the Event:

It is fantastic how limitations can teach you what is possible, by using just simple tools.
I mean I got to the end of this and said "Hey look I can make it even more minimal and it will still be nice!"
Not to mention that this game can start as exactly this, and build upon it by adding a few stuff, to make a decent length game.

  • The challenge needed a map. Well the game MUST have 1 map to run anyway. I could had left that map blank (literally) and just add pictures and choices. According to choices we could work around with the one variable I used, using different values (powers of 2), thus a visual novel game could be also possible, making the one Actor and the grid useless too!
  • On the Event I used 4 Event Pages. Those Pages could become just a single Event Page by nesting Conditional Branches, but since that was a project to be made to have fun, I was just too lazy to turn it into an one Event Page event.

Great Event, fantastic idea!

Feedback will be highly appreciated.

It seems I'm unable to play this game. When I open the index.html file I get this error:

Just a quick update, I was able to get the game to work in Firefox. It won't work in Chrome for some reason.

I'm impressed you were able to do so much with so little for this game. I feel like the importance of the timer to the MC could have been expounded upon a little more, and there were a couple of minor grammatical errors. That being said, the ending was solid and allowed the player's imagination to fill in the blanks nicely.

Well done. :)

This was a pretty good game for what it was. I like the simplicity, and the how the dialogue lead to the ending aside from a view grammatical errors. Once it ended I was sure there was more to come, but sadly not. It left me to wonder what really happened. I think you're on to something here. Overall I'd say 7/10 for what limitations you gave your self.

Not sure if you meant to leave the resources open like that, but I'd recommend encrypting those files, mostly because I know the POP series is a paid product.

That was nice, Dread.
I didn't expect that ending (very clever), there's a few small grammar errors here and there but overall it was short and enjoyable, good mapping too in the house. And yes, I agree with @DianteC, it's better if you encrypt the project to avoid problems.

You did a good job despite the limitations.

I never intended to do such a thing, I probably forgot to encrypt them on the second build I made.

I will reupload an encrypted version and

I deleted it. But as far as the grammatical errors, it's nothing to serious. Just a missing letter here and there, a couple letters turned around within the word. If you breeze through the text you'll find them fairly quickly.

The face set!!! Of course. I was thinking that it was only the parallaxed maps (encrypted the first time anyway) but it has a faceset too. Encryption was a must and the fixed version was NOT encrypted. You were right.

You can not believe how paranoid I am on protection intellectual property of others. What happened here is unbelieveable. Thank you both of you for helping out keeping the community clean of such incidents.

Hey @Dreadshadow, sadly on my side I am getting constant errors, within Chrome, I am getting Actor.Js can't be found. Within Microsoft Edge, I am getting Background music that can't be found. So I wonder, did you select web browser when compiling your game? if so, perhaps it's clashing with the encryption. I think for the sake of testing, you should re-upload it compiled for windows instead. Because maybe the web browser isn't about to find these, because of encryption. Just a thought, may be wrong, but worth a try!

P.S. Within Microsoft Edge, the game plays, but the error continues to pop up during playing.

Okay, can you try something for me? Try running it on firefox and please tell me if it works.

Hey So I wonder, did you select web browser when compiling your game?
Size. The game is 9MB and it lasts 5 minutes.
Imagine it with the exe file ( +45MB ) Huge for such duration.
Also a browser application is supposed to work on anything.

It works splendidly in firefox, but I must admit, It is still mind-boggling that it doesn't work in Chrome and Microsoft Edge.
Other than that, brilliant work, it was short, sweet, with a hint of expectancy, the type of expectancy I would appreciate in a trailer.
I think it will leave the audience desiring more and wanting to know more about the night before the cleanup! Especially the line of evidence strolling the hallway at the conclusion! Brilliant work @Dreadshadow Keep it up!

Totally interested in how you fix your Chrome and Edge version if you do.

My heart froze at the very first count down as the game froze and got right on second time.

0.o hope nothing biographic. Lotsa innuendos. I really should had guessed with the resource choices. Nice title screen and icon and ambiance. Nice suspens, I kept trying guessing what that guy's relationship with his friends was. :3 Your music fit always well with anything you do. Here it is equal quality and effort so nothing jarred. I kinda am not used to run a game using my browser. Hope not all MV games asks that to be stable!

Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
