In my game, I plan to have a few boss fights that go in this formula...

You fight as One Party Member versus One important boss, basically resulting in a One on One duel. I plan to use this formula for 3 boss fights in the future in my game, one of which is a secret boss.

Do you think this is interesting? It's something like the Yuri vs. Flynn battle in Tales of Vesperia or Luke vs. Asch in Tales of the Abyss. Would this add some intense feel to the game or will it ruin it?

Suikoden series had 1-on-1 fights that played more like rock-paper-scissors than its standard combat system.  I don't think it really added anything, though.

Usually when you have these kinds of situations, it's all about having a set pattern, like block a few hits > enemy does something that you can counter and you deal damage > back to blocking > attack during opening > back to blocking.

One example would be a boss fight from Radiant Historia, where if you attack the boss normally he will eventually use a super attack that heals back pretty much all damage you ever deal to him.  The only way to prevent this (and win the fight) is to save up all your turns in the Turn-Order list and throw out your strongest attack 6 times in a row or so.

unless it is an action combat thing, which it is not most likely, no, they suck, they are repetitive and dull.

if a turn based rpg ever has a one-on-one fight that is fun, i will sing "I'm Walking On Sunshine" in real life.

I'd have to agree with SVGK for the most part. It really comes down to the battle system.

There are many One on One fights in RPGs, but the good ones are pretty much the ones with the best battle system.

Kinda like the 2 Tales games you mentioned, and the fight in Dragon Age Origins where the main character gets the

chance to One on One fight with: (Possibly a spoiler of Dragon Age Origins)

I like one on one fights. But as with anything like this if the system blows, the fight probably will too.

It would depend on your battle system and how dependent it is on having other party members present to make it interesting.  If there is a lot of depth and strategy to the gameplay with just a single party member on the field then it should be fine.  But if your battle system relies on other party members to make the combat interesting it would probably make the boss battles feel less intense, not more so.  So it's hard to give a straight answer.

I think its a fine idea, just make sure that you don't depend too heavily on the support of party members before it happens. For example, if you have a healer in your party that you consistently need to keep you from defeat, you might want to keep everyone together or perhaps change the play style a tad.

A one-on-one fight removes teamwork to focus on an individual, and that narrowed focus is where it's power lies. For something like a secret optional boss, a player might find it more fun to be able to use everyone together, to be able to use their whole team to their fullest.

I make EVERY TIME the battle only have one actor ALIVE and one enemy ALIVE. It enter the 'duel' state. And make the battle become suikoden one on one battle (stun both battler then using event + show choice + force attack + some script call).

So if we start the battle with two actor and face 3 enemy it will be normal battle(I use sideview animated battle). Then after we kill 2 enemy and then one actor dies. It enter one on one duel in same battle. Quite cool in my opinion. :p .

If you have a good battle system, then creating interesting 1v1s is elementary. Anyway, I wouldn't recommend introducing a different battle system.

When specific battles use different systems, it makes them feel like an annoying, forced minigame. Goemon 5, Wild Arms 3, etc.

It's completely fine when they are minigames, though.

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
