Ooo, secret characters!

Hiya! I thought it would be cool to add into my RPG the option to select a character. This character would be who you played as through the whole game, and depending on the character chosen there would be different stat boosts and skills available, so in the end, its actually player preference.

However, I wanted to go a step further and add "Secret Characters," which when selected offer a more advanced plethora of skills and another view on the overall story. But, the problem is, the character would be unlocked through terms of sidequests or extra dungeons/boss battles. The question is, when the requirements for the character unlock are acheived, is there a way for the player to select "New Game" from the main menu and have a new character appear on the selection screen? Could there be a "???" option as a character, and once the player acheives the unlock requirements on a different file, the name would change to something like "Isaac?"

I hope you see where I'm coming from. If you have questions or need visual representations to help me, please ask! Thanks for your help!

By using the script I'm about to link to, you can have it so that when a player beats your game, or those portions that unlock those secret characters, and select "New Game", a switch turned on in the first file will be carried over into a new game. That way, when they go to select their character, the new one will appear:
