I could be wrong, because this is a complex area, but I think the fact that it has a GPL licence may be a problem.

Under GPL licences, you have to ensure that the end user can access it and modify it in their turn.  I think (but am not 100% certain) this means that anything distributed which uses GPL work must be unencrypted so that the end user has this access.

If that is the case, then there would be a huge problem with custom assets.

Eh, projects like this are extremely common, most of them fizzle out and die before they've got their first downloadable version.  It's not worth looking at until they have a working engine with all the necessary parts.

yeah, I've seen quite a number of these kinds of projects. They're active at the first few months or so then eventually die out.

nope, just the software itself has to stay free, but things created with it, like a picture drawn in gimp, isn't affected by the license and therefor your choice

but btt there is another open source software "open rpg maker" which could become a legal rpg maker 2000 like programm with linux support (with 2k3 now officaly released it lost some but not all relevance, especaly the linux part is still a up to date lack of the offical makers)

however it's 5 years in dev now, editor works already but engine is not released (there is allready something running but too buggy to be release accoring to the developer)

well lets see in 1 or 2 years from now xD

(maybe till then the mysterious mid 2015 statisfys some of my needs to choose my op system freely ;)    )

As said, there have been many such tries and some got farther than others.

However, we do not support or advertise for non-Degica game makers here (see forum rules), so closing this

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
Can someone recommend some fun story-heavy RPGs to me? Coming up with good gameplay is a nightmare! I was thinking of making some gameplay platforming-based, but that doesn't work well in RPG form*. I also was thinking of removing battles, but that would be too much like OneShot. I don't even know how to make good puzzles!
one bad plugin combo later and one of my followers is moonwalking off the screen on his own... I didn't even more yet on the new map lol.
time for a new avatar :)
