Hello RPG Maker Forums!

I have a question about RPG Maker MV: How would you go about opening the main menu while a choice or text is shown?

I am making a text-based game that uses RPG Maker's combat elements, which means that 100% of the time text will be shown. How can I get around the impossibility to open the menu at these times?

Thank you very much!

Extra Info: I am using many Yanfly plugins, including Message Core to allow for full-page text to be shown, and the Yanfly Message Pack to allow an infinite amount of choices.

P.S.: If you have any tips on making a text-based game in RPG Maker MV other than using Yanfly's message core, please let me know in this tread. :)

What are you trying to do with having text/choice being shown with the main menu? Is this for a tutorial, a cutscene?

I just said it was a text-based game. That means that the entire game is comprised of text (Like your ye olde text adventures). This means that there is always text on screen. However, the player needs to be able to see their menu! D:

Did you not read the description? Lol

Yes I read the description but I've never played text games and I've just seen a few things here and there, the closest I've gotten has been choose your adventure type games and visual novels. So no, I wouldn't know how you would want your interface to look.

Honestly what you want to have the menu accessible while running text requires a plugin to be made.
While on that subject the reason you can't have a menu open while in text is 2 fold. One, the menu is a different scene the map scene and thus can't be read as rpg maker reads scene separately. And two, while two or more events can run on the map, only one can be interacted with at a time, thus making a menu that can be touched or mess with doesn't work.

The simplest (in terms of plugins you have to learn and get) work around is when you have time to make choices to allow one to open the menu do what needs to be done and come back.
Or if you want to stream line it use Yanfly's map skill select and map select equip plus the built in item selector for when you want people to get items, or weapons or armors or use skills.
If you want you can also use script calls to force equip the actor or actors and then use script calls to see what they have equip (if you have battles and the like) and have events changed based on that.

For example have a text prompt that says pick a weapon to fight
and using map select equip a menu of 4 weapons comes up and the player picks one.
Then ask if they want to equip it or not (and if they have a weapon, that weapon would be removed, if equipped) and then make the next event changed based on what weapon is equipped.

Hm... the best solution would be to have choices open up the Menu "Temporarily", closing the text while the menu is open I'm assuming? The traditional menu UI is preferred to weird workarounds.

Yeah...without getting too complex or paying someone for a plugin.

I actually figured it out!

So, first thing I did is made a choice called [Menu].

Then, I had the screen go black when you open it, causing the menu to appear without seeing that the text just magically vanishes.

The menu is there, and it works fine.

Click out, I have it jump to the beginning of the choice, and it works perfectly.

The icing on the cake is that you can set the Cancel button in the choice editor to a specific command. Like... cancel.

So you know how the right mouse button goes to the menu in normal games? It does in this one too! Just on choices! With NO PLUGINS!

Thanks for your help guys.
