Unfortunately not - at this point in time, Mac version is only available through Steam.  

We're still trying to get Mac standalone, but it might take a while.

Yes.  Buying from the website gives you both a Steam and a non-Steam version.  You should already see it in Steam - it just can't be downloaded until tomorrow.

So, if I download and install the Windows version now, will my product key work for a mac version as well when it's available? Or will I need to buy it twice?

Got excited when I saw the email saying it was available for download...but actually it turns out I can't have it yet because the mac version isn't available yet...kind of annoying to be teased like that!

Ok...are we sure about this? Because I when I come to download my standalone mac version I really don't want to be told "you've already used this product key so you'll need to buy it again if you want to activate another copy." So we're pretty confident that's not gonna happen?

The key is a steam key it can't be taken away from you. In fact claim it on steam now you will feel safer. After that you download the zip file install it and run the game and use your email/steam key for it. 

They decided to make life easy and simple to just reuse the key on their site rather then generating since it already sits in the database.

I'm not sure if I can claim it on steam now, it says the product will unlock in 8 hours and the only thing I can choose is "add to cart." Although I realise this is not a "how to use steam" forum so I'll try to figure that one out myself.

download steam and install it and when steam open bottom left add game. do it now.

What you did was trying to buy it but since you already bought it from the RPG Maker Web Store you just have to follow these steps:

Please follow these instructions to activate a new retail purchase on Steam:

1. Launch the Steam client software and log into your Steam account.
2. Click the Games Menu.
3. Choose Activate a Product on Steam...
4. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the process.

One thing you can be sure of - we will NOT ask you to buy it again if you have already bought it. You just need to read through some old support threads to see proof of that - how much trouble we go to to help people get up and running on new computers, to avoid needing to buy it again.
