Otherland is an interactive visual novel made in RPG Maker VX Ace. It is a whimsical horror based on Alice in Wonderland (book) and inspired by other horror titles like Little Nightmares, Fran Bow, Ib, and Pocket Mirror, while still having its own personal charm. It tells a story about how nothing can be ever be perfect and perfectionism isn't always perfect - this includes life not being perfect itself. That no matter how beautiful paradise may seem, it still has its flaws.
※ This game isn't suited for those who have trouble handling serious topics found in horror such as depression, manipulation, blood, and brutal deaths.
※Please note that despite the game being in 2nd person and having exploration elements, it is still advertised as a visual novel - in another perspective.
※ To get the most out of the experience, please wear headphones.

Features

※ Original artwork and story
※ Episodic
※ Characters who will travel alongside you
※ Collectibles
※ Exploration & lore
※ Three unique endings all dependent on how you treat others and yourself
※ Bonus Content (upon final chapter)

Gilbert Warrens was abandoned at the doorstep of the Kingsman Orphanage as a baby by his mother, Meredith. As his thirteen years tolled by, he came to saw things that no one else could see, except him. Creatures, spirits who lived alongside the people of London. No matter how many times he told the other oprhans that there were these odd things around them, they all pegged him as a liar or insane.

So, he and his only friend, the young demon faun who watches over Gilbert's good health, are left together to share their lives in the orphanage. Until one day, the circus beyond their wildest dreams comes to town square. A circus of magic, a circus of wonder - The Circus of the Paradise. El Paradiso.

The art looks amazing, the world has a unique feel and the story seems promising. I agree, I'm not sure why this game hasn't gotten more interest here!

Thanks! I've been working on the story for years; there's only a half hour of gameplay from the prologue. It got waaaaay more attention on Itch than it seemed to do on any forums I posted on. I think it's because the visual novel genre isn't as interesting here as rpg games are on the RMG Maker forum sites.

I think its mostly because games here don't get the deserved attention, I guess people don't use here to seek out for games :(. Anyway the artwork is amazing! Also the sounds on the gameplay seems really well put, this is some incredible work done for sure!

Thanks for taking a quick look at the video! Same, honestly. I always look on rpgmaker.net for games. I haven't been on this forum since I was 15.

I decided to download your demo and I really liked it. The artwork is very beautiful, the setting is well done, everything was chosen correctly and organized very well to make the project something special. Without a doubt you and everyone involved in the project have a lot of talent and affection for the game and I confess that I am looking forward to see how this project will perform from now on.

I'm watching this tread for future updates! ^^

Thank you for downloading and giving me a positive review, friend! I actually did everything myself; I'm the only person on the team. I've been working on many different versions of this story since college and I think the RPG platform was always the best medium to portray the story in. The best place to keep track of me is on Tumblr or Itch. I'm not really active on the forums.

Rated on itch.io then!

From what I saw it is a very laborious project, so I wish you luck. Keep up the good work! ^^

Your rating brought it up from a 3 to a 4! I was a little worried when there were no comments and only one rating. The last person didn't leave a comment on why they left a three, so there was no way of knowing what they didn't like. I did put a lot of work into it, so it was nice to get some feedback on it. It's been pretty quiet for the most part.

Looks gorgeous. Im going to go out on a limb to say the lack of attention is due mostly to it being a visual novel.
While RPGMaker is adept at making VNs, most in the hobby use it to make/ play JRPGs... and thus likely skipped over the game (as I almost did) simply due to it being a VN.

Your artwork is gorgeous, I just think this isnt a place where many VN fans congregate.

But thats just a theory... a GAME Theory.

Edit: I watched the walkthrough and thought I should give you my feedback since you were wishing for more feedback in this thread:
"Dark. VNs arent really my thing, especially ones about trauma. But I made myself sit through and read even though I was uncomfortable and I enjoyed the message of the story, even if I did not so buy the character dialogue at times. In that regard, it felt more like a third party was telling a story. IE- the narrator. As none of the dialogue felt really unque to or consistant with a character. That said, I really enjoyed your artwork."

Maybe the last person just didn't knew what to say. The game has a difficult topic for many people, but certainly will have many who will like it. In the future, if you need translation into Portuguese you can count on me! :)

There is a narrator for the story! It's mostly told on Gilbert's end when it comes to the character's personal opinions on things, but there is certainly someone telling the story. There's a hint on who it is, as there is only one character in the game capable of 'ghosting' all the others' lives. By the narrator's voice babbles, some should be able to determine who's telling Gilbert's story.

Maybe so. I did leave a warning, hopefully preventing anyone with any stress disorders from accidentally triggering themselves from any depictions of ab***. As a victim of religious ab***, I know why it's important to leave that information in there, as I drew most of the manipulative tactics from my own experiences. I'll certainly be looking for translators once the full version of the pilot comes out!

Back in action to develop the indie game that has been long overdue... Final Fallacy. A game that keeps on giving! The development never ends as the developer thinks to be the smart cookie by coming back and beginning by saying... "Oh bother, this indie game has been long overdue..." How could one resist such? No-one c
