@Lord: what do you mean misinformed? No one informed anyone, it is a prediction. What are your reasons why the consoles will be better then ever before?
Perhaps misinformed was the wrong word to use. I meant to say it's a very common way of thinking amongst a lot of people these days, and not a very well educated one. I could say more but I'm sure you can find other sources on the web which would explain it a lot better than I, such as Michael Pachter's videos.
There is a very few percentage of people that owns all three systems. Have you ever really want to buy a game but you do not have the system? Of course! I have, for example FF crisis core. If that game was on PSN (for the ps3) I would buy it immediately. But its only on PSP...Square already lost at least one sell right there.
Would you buy a $800 ps4 to play FF15 (which is gonna prolly cost around $80)? Or just pay $50 for a controller (assuming for some dumb reason why the ps3 controller is not compatible) and the game?
I'm not really sure how this is relevant to what I was saying. A PSP exclusive is on the PSP in order to sell the PSP, not damage the PS3's sales. And I'm not really sure what you mean by that last question either - no, I wouldn't pay $800 for a game I could play on the older console, but in what case does this actually happen, and moreso do you think it's going to happen with the PS4 and Nextbox? Because it's pretty safe to say it isn't. We won't see, for example, the Witcher 3 on PS3 just because of some new controller support.
I would really like to see your point of view why it is a better business decision to stay with consoles and why do you think consoles is actually gonna "take off". Because I think it "took off" when the SNES came out.
The console industry is the strongest it has ever been over the past few years. With the big three (Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360) selling over 240 million units worldwide, I think that's a pretty fair statement to make.
However - after about 8 years, they're getting pretty stagnant. Devs have pushed them to their limits, and now people want something new to play with. This has always been the case, and there is no exception here. Improved graphics, improved capabilities, even more gimmicks - you name it, the new generation will bring it. And the audience from the last generation become the primary fanbase for these new consoles, meaning the amount of console gamers will, generally speaking, only continue to grow.
As for the whole "taking off" thing - I said they'd
take off more than ever, not just taking off, meaning that consoles are only going to keep doing better over time. If you meant that you think the industry was at its prime during the SNES period, I'd recommend you compare sales figures from that time to the ones I listed above.
