Thanks everyone who replied. I don't just mean graphics and sprites as commercial quality.

It takes time to develop a commercial venture, and time also to be available for people you love (aka real life). Ignore the naysayers and always keep a clear idea of what you want to do and where you want to go.

the best way to shut them up is still by releasing an awesome game yourself...it's a huge facepalm to them :)

Why stay away from them?

Why not hold your head up high and say "YES,  I made this using RPG Maker. I Spent hours of my life to not only learn the program and all its features, but I also spent the time to create my own, commercial, rpg..."
Because their rant will not add nothing to your life, using reason will have no effect on such people. Unless they actually use reason (wich is rare, most say "made in rpg maker? crap") why bother trying to put some sense into them?

"awesome" is a subjective notion but one that is not subjective is making a living out of it.  :p

what kind of responses do you expect on an rpg maker forum

lots of free tools get dissed... there's a lot of same-y noise garbage games released through them. Game Maker and Unity both cop it, and both have been used for very commercially successful games too. To me, the noise is in the background, and I tend to ignore it. It's ubiquitous though, and there's nothing to be done about that, but it can colour people's first impressions. who cares what those people think, those people are also just background noise you can ignore.

Lol yea, sometimes people can be very defensive when their opinions are challenged. It probably would be best to ignore them; however, some people (like me) thrive on peoples doubts.

For example, I would'nt have even started using RPG maker if people didnt tell me there as no way that I was going to make a good game... That gave me the motivation to prove them wrong which turns into motivation to simply surpass your previous achievement. Whether that be a complex script, a mini-game or a full commercial game.

Also, at the end of the day. Who cares what they say or think. You should be pleased with yourself with the fact that you created a commercial quality computer game... So many people want to make their own game because their idea 'is epic' but they just dont have the capabilities to succeed at the challenge when given the opportunity.

People who hate on the RTP make me wanna slap a *****. ;p

People who hate on RPG Maker are idiots. They obviously know sweet FA about the program so frankly, their opinions should count for naught.

I dunno, thing is people can tend to put out the very bare minimum of a game with RPG Maker, weve all seen it. Some people dont take the time to learn to map or use in depth events, they just crap out something theyve barely put 15 hours into like its some sort of commercial product god and expect people to like it. Then we get say 15 of these going, and people who see these tend to get annoyed, green light being the most amazing example of this. Thing is though they're right, you really can **** out a horrible commercial product with RM because of how easy it is to use. However they miss the depth that RPG Maker has as well, and the truly great things that can be made with it. Even I myself whose been a part of the RPG maker community for like, 6 or 7 years, find myself dissing it because it is seriously restraining compared to other developer tools. Going back to the RTP as well, because people use the RTP, or other popular tiles (Celiana, Lunaria) there are tons of games that all look the damn same, again that can really annoying to people, I know it bugs the **** out of me personally. I can see why people would be angry that a community that thrive son using other peoples tiles and scripts to put together their game in a very easy to user maker, to produce a game that is identical to 15 other games in almost every way but story. Then has the audacity to say its on equal grounds of games with completely custom graphics and coding. RPG Maker kinda brings it on itself really.

Now im not saying RM is crap and theres no reason to use it, but if your gonna try and make a commercial game then act like its a commercial game. Commission tiles, hire a coder, or learn to do it yourself.

I mean for petes sake i remember a while back a RM game on kickstater got like 11k of funding and they were using a Active Battle System, now for those of you who have put any thought into ABS have probably noticed really only Final Fantasy uses it. Thats because they literally own it, and only they can use it. So this dude uses RM to get funding and the guy didn't even do enough research to see that his battle system, the core of his game, was technology owned by SE that he couldn't use.

I couldn't agree more with you Liberty, too many people understimate the power and value of the RTP materials, it's how you use and edit them! People will never understand this! In proper hands the materials can shine, they have a lot of potential! Most people can't even map a freakin' city...and they even dare to complain about the materials and if they're overused or not.

I'm also a fan of the RTP materials, and I really can't stand when someone says crappy and meaningless things about them. Those Haters who try to label the developers who uses the RTP as "lazy" are the worst scum ever.

As I said, people who hate Rpg Maker don't deserve my attention, they aren't even worth my time.

I disagree with this statement for so many reasons...

-- There are other games, such as zelda that have also used ABS type systems..

-- If i write an abs script, final fantasy does not own that, i do...

-- If someone then used my ABS is a commercial game, without permission, square enix would not be able to do anything.. but i would..

You may as well have stated that final fantasy ows every kind of battle system you could think of. They dont, they have just used ALL types of battling systems in their games before.

http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Battle_System

To be fair, they do own a patient for THEIR ABS...

Oh Lord, Square owns ABS? Someone better tell all the other RPGs out there that are commercial and viable competitors to Square's games about that because - sorry, no I can't keep a straight face. Square does not own the rights to ABSs. It owns the right to it's own ABSs but not any others. Just as they don't own the right to side-view battles or -gasp- mythological figures! Just because they use them doesn't mean they own them. It's like saying someone owns the sky. Or air. Or molecules. You can own certain molecules (say those that make up the exact formulae of Coke) but not each and every one. So, yeah, sorry can't stop giggling at the thought of Square rocking up to certain companies with cease and desist letters. XD

Considering that it's likely all they've seen is the massive influx of terrible rpgmaker games lately, I'm not surprised they would have that opinion.

I mean. If you'd only ever heard of ww2 you'd have a pretty negative opinion of Germany.

Square filed a Japanese patent application related to the ATB system on July 16, 1991 and a corresponding US application on March 16, 1992. One Japanese patent (JP2794230) and two US patents (US5390937 and US5649862) were granted based on these applications.

Sorry i meant ATB, got the terms mixed up.

EDIT: Nvm I messed up, both of those are now in the public domain having been 23 years ago, carry on.

Yea, Patents usually only last for 5 years tops, and then they need to be renewed. Also I feel the need to point out that patents based on games, and computer software in general, has more to do with the actual "code", then what the code does(since coding is treated like the writing industry, thus using the same code, is compriable to plagorism, so as long as you found another way to create a similar/even the same system by writing a code that was noticably different then the code that was under the patent, you could use the system.

In any case though, with Square's stock being worth less the the paper they were written on, I doubt they kept renewing that patent to this point in time(and the 2nd you stop renewing a patent, there's no point to renew it at a later date)..

The problem is that these opinions will discourage users that are new to RM from wanting to try your game, effectively leading to loss of potential customers.

When I look at a new restaurant and all I see is bad reviews I'm not going to try it.

Whether this actually does influence customers or not is another question and could be purely speculation.

Oh, I've felt that in person actually.

"You make games?" "Yes." "What engine do you use?" "RPGMaker." Then followed the instant stink eye side glance and I felt like I had to slip into the defensive.

But like most people have said, the negative stigma around the maker exists for a reason: There really -IS- a lot of crap games out there made in the program. Because the program is so accessible, there's a large quantity of little nubs who think "I can make a game!", 'successfully' make that game, think it to be precious gold, and then pitch it to the world like it is that gold even though it sucks. And this is what people see. A large amount of the best RM games seem to stay within the community; so while we bear witness to just what level of power the maker has, the gaming community as a whole just sees the little nub with their starry eyes popping out their trash game.

Now, we all know bashing an entire system based on the bottom of the barrel offerings is foolish and trite, but it's human nature. Like Tsukihime said, if we see nothing but bad reviews about something, we're very likely to form that opinion ourselves and not try it. These people that hate on RPGMaker as an engine are in that position. Why should they take the time to learn what the engine can really offer? That's not their role in this; their role is to play and judge what they think is good and bad and put their time and or money in what is most likely to be enjoyable.

I guess, as a community we should do better to bring the best games to the masses. To showcase, through -games-, what the maker really has to offer outside of RPGMaker aimed forums and such. Social networking and all that junk is certainly a thing I feel as a whole the community lacks. But that's the only way to truly kill the negative impact the rush of bad games has brought down. If we look at what games are known to people outside of the RM community, (random example, Yume Nikki or what...OFF last year? or that Pom game for a bit) it's the ones that caught on like wildfire on other social networking platforms. It's not easy to force a game to catch on in such a way, but we could be louder. We should be louder.

Don't tell them "RPGMaker can be used to make great things!", SHOW THEM.

yeah, the effect on other customers would be on a per person basis. I for one doesn't really care about reviews, I like to try it myself unless it looks awfully bad (which is kind of rare for me), but I guess most person do care about reviews and use them to decide...

Why not hold your head up high and say "YES,  I made this using RPG Maker. I Spent hours of my life to not only learn the program and all its features, but I also spent the time to create my own, commercial, rpg..."

I find that the majority of people who diss something are either jealous of the people who can/do utilize it correctly or simply one of the webs notorious 'Troll's' ^_^
Considering the only way to get on Steam is to put the game on Greenlight and get it through the voting approval (of which the primary voters there seem to hate RM and the RTP), about the only way you're going to do that is by staying away from the RTP.

I'm not saying it's fair or it's right, since I've played plenty of good RTP games, however, if you're looking at Steam you're going to have to do something more than posting an RTP game: you need to convince people to vote for it. The problem is the mob mentality that escalates there. All it takes is just a couple of people bad-mouthing and voting down a game for any reason, and suddenly your game topic is filled with pages of people hating the game and voting it down even without playing the demo or reading the information to see what the game is about.

About the only way to conquer this is to pull in a mass following of people that can drown out the negative comments and who are willing to upvote your game, but such a following usually comes from outside of Greenlight. If you rely on the primary GL voters, chances are slim it will get through. The downside is, you have to have an account with Steam and have had purchased something in the past in order to vote on a game in GL. So those people coming in to vote for your game can only do so if they've made previous purchases; if not, it may not be worth their time, effort, and money to vote on your game.

People who say that are just random haters. RPG Maker do give enough tools to make really great games. But in some people mind, a good game = 3D crap everywhere.

Those "pseudo-gamers" should be just ignored.
Not to mention there's the common train of thought that in order to make a game you need to be knee-deep in code. I've noticed in the last 12 months though that "make your own game" software has been coming out quite frequently, so the popularity of being able to make games without programming knowledge I think is rising. Will it rise enough to sway the haters? I don't know.
