Petal Knights is an RPG inspired by Sailor Moon & classic other mahou shoujo anime, telling the story of modern day schoolgirls who must become Knights in Shining Armour to defend their world. Interlopers from Faerie are trying to steal broken hearts and only the Petal Knights can stop them. Gossip by day to find who they’re after, then battle by sword in Faerie!

Petal Knights Episode One is complete and available now. It tells a self contained story that should take between 30 and 40 minutes to complete with a mix of combat and gossip mechanics.

Story

After centuries apart, Earth and Faerie have reconnected. Wicked, capricious Fanes of the Court of Stone want to unravel human civilization, and are searching for broken hearts to turn to their magical ends. They find anguish a-plenty within the walls of High Schools, targeting tumultuous teens.

Momo and her friends find themselves chosen by the Court of Blossoms, human-loving Síth, to take up the mantle of the Petal Knights, noble fighters who once stood for unity. They become transforming heroines, protecting others from the insidious schemes of the Court of Stone, while trying to keep their true identities a secret.

Gameplay is split between sections in the human world where the player has to gossip amongst their peers to figure out what wicked schemed the Fanes are up to, and the Fairy World where they must battle magical enemies and adventure through dungeons.

In Episode One, the Petal Knights are faced with a mystery- someone has tampered with exam papers, but who? And why? Solve the mystery as Momo and then face down a Fane as Cherry Knight!

Characters

  • Momo / Cherry Knight
    • Leader of the Petal Knights, a soft hearted chatterbox. She’s not the most academic, or the most athletic, but she’s always got time for friends. As a knight she has the magical power to heal her allies.
  • Shona / Rose Knight
    • A hot headed perfectionist who’s sometimes too quick witted for her own good. As a knight she wields phenomenal destructive power.
  • Aiza / Lily Knight
    • Cool headed and analytical, Aiza never moves without carefully considering all her options. As a knight she wields technical abilities that support her allies.

Features
  • Gossip
    • A unique mechanic combining of dialogue and the RPG maker combat engine
    • Use your chat skills to pry information out of tight lipped opponents, but make sure to finish before the tea runs out!
Gossip is what I've spent the most time on in this project and the part I'm most keen to get feedback on. The idea is to offer a lot of dialogue options that you can explore, but using more classic JRPG mechanics like the combat. Build up your stats, specialise, become great at chatting and unlock juicy secret dialogue with NPCs. Well, that's the idea, whether the implementation lives up to it or not I don't know!

Mechanically, Gossip uses the regular RMMV SV combat system with some tweaks. The regular combat party is swapped for a single actor with a special skillset, and a HUD element is added to show the "Tea" meter. The tea meter decreases as the encounter goes on, and the encounter ends when it runs out.

The main system is a modified version of Yanfly's Snatch script, where all the items are topics of conversation. When one is stolen, it triggers a special event playing out the appropriate dialogue.

NPCs have another meter, "Candor" that determines how likely they are to answer questions - using skills will increase this, so you can Flatter or Cajole them until they'll answer your question.

You add Questions to your repertoire as you delve deeper into the mystery, by examining clues, encountering people, or sometimes by asking other Questions! Pose Questions in Gossip to learn Secrets, then use them to figure out what's really going on.

Hi! I just wanted to drop by and say I utterly love the concept for the game you have going on here? The mixture of drawing from classic magical girl anime and modern high school gossip is such a unique combination, and I'm honestly all here for it! I found myself getting immersed in the demo because the dialogue for all the characters you could spill the tea with is so brimful with personality! Despite the sluggish loading waits sometimes, I found myself really getting into this.

However, (this is a small nitpick) I'm not sure whether it's Itchio or something wrong with the actual game, but there were some serious delays in SE and MEs at points, and sometimes the BGM would just fade out and stop completely for a few seconds and I would be all like, "Did I do something wrong here? Uh oh," haha. That being said, there were some really good choices of SE and BGM, like the pouring of tea before a spill and the elegant music played during it. Other than that small thing, to me, this is a pretty solid demo showing off the Gossip concept! :>

I look forward to following the development of this game! Good job on creating something so fascinating; I'm very eager to learn and play more! :kaojoy:

I've noticed the same lag when playing it on itch.io - I don't encounter that when running it on my computer so I think it's down to playing it in the browser (itch.io is also not nuts about the number of files in the project which made it very difficult). I think for subsequent demos I'll probably post a download link and hopefully that will clear up the load times.

New devlog, new video (edited it into the top post, but included it here too)

This time it's the introductory Gossip scenario which is supposed to act as a tutorial for the very basics of Gossip, Ask, Chat and Blab. I'm a little worried it'll come across as too simple and condescending/boring, but *hoping* it's quick and just gives the player a firm idea of what each command does before throwing lots of them in at once.

Gonna take a little break from this project to participate in the No Travel Game Jam this month!

Just wanted to say I burst out laughing when I saw the tea meter, I love it! It seems like a cool and unique game feature, I wish you luck with this project!

I took a little time away to work on my No Travel Game Jam entry, but I'm back now with another update :ywink:

This one's pretty slow, a lot of back end stuff. One big back end change- I figured out how to save and load extra data via script, which allowed me to implement a new system for remembering which NPCs you've asked which questions. Previously this was all done via which items you had in your inventory, but now it's a unique map.

Next time I'll have another video to show the updated Gossip work, I'm really excited to show it off!

Here's my second update for the month! I recorded a little video of myself talking about what I've changed and progressed with this month. The main change is adding a new main menu option to look through the Questions and Answers you've unlocked, and implementing more of the dialogue, Questions and Secrets for the next scenario.


I'll edit the video into the main post.

Hoping to have a new demo ready by the end of June, fingers crossed!

I just watched the videos you posted. Seems like you've got the start of something good and I like your gossip battles. It reminds me a bit of the debate battle system in some of the later ROTTK games, except they used basically rock-paper-scissors mechanic.

Looking forward to seeing this progress. ;)

ROTTK is Romance of the Three Kingdoms? I'll have to give those a look. I really love conversation and dialogue based games.

Why is Momo 2 years behind in High School btw? As a 16yo, she should be a Junior in HS. Freshmen are supposed to be 14yo. It was just the 1st thing I noticed as I watched the 1st video in your OP.

14 - Freshman
15 - Sophomore
16 - Junior
17 - Senior

But besides that, cool video.

Edit: I just noticed your description says she's not the most academic. So I guess she got held back 2 years, ouch lol. She'll be 19 when she's a HS Senior, possibly 20 by the time she graduates.:kaoswt:

Oh my GOD!!!!! I have been waiting for a game like this. As long as it has it's own story (unlike Wedding Peach), I am all for it. Looking forward to the day this is complete. :kaoluv:

This is a bit confused and I should change things, however, I must point out, the game is not set in America so the school age / years are different. "Freshman", etc. terminology is not used outside of North America.

Momo is not held back. When I wrote this introduction I had imagined the game in the Japanese school system, where there's a middle school and a high school, with middle school spanning from 12 to 15, and High School spanning 16-18, so although it's her first year of High School, she only has 2 more to go, not 4.

That said, I have since changed the setting to Scotland where we don't have middle schools at all so she'd be in fourth or fifth year instead.

@EuphemiaArtoria Ah that makes more sense. I've visited Japan during the summer when I was a kid, thus attended their schools for a few weeks. In Japan, middle school year 1/2/3 would equate to age 12/13/14 and their high school's year 1/2/3 would equate to age 15/16/17. I guess it doesn't really matter if Momo is in Scotland though lol. I've never been there so I can't comment on that.

In that case I believe you can use "senior high school" instead, to avoid the confusion :)

thats it, i 've had it, I will NOT promote my game as a "retro RPG" when its done, i have in the past but it is literally the first thing on every rpg maker game description to the point that you'd think the sales pitch came with the RTP. I refuse to use that angle.
My memory is embellishing the quality of NES era game assets :/ .... I need to stop comparing my work to somthing that was groundbreaking decades ago. Especially since its not as good as I seem to keep remembering it to be.
