So, I've been working on my game for a bit now, I have the entire 'Prologue' finished, as well as most of the first town completed and the first two zones you can go into. I've done all this with obvious placeholders in character sprites and tilesets because they're just the default. Now, my reasoning for this is because I'm thinking that once I get further in the game, I can find people to make and edit the sprites and tilesets to better match the characters and the game and from there go and give the game a facelift. This would mean the demos I release, while having the game mostly complete for those sections would be mostly placeholder.
What kind of damage could you see this giving the game in the long run? Do you as a designer, think it's alright to have mostly placeholders for the demos, and after you're past that point start to give the game a facelift into the finished product?
My reasoning for this is because, while I know the general feel and tone of the game, I know it may change in the long run. I have things mapped out, I have my character personalities, I know where the story begins and ends, and I have the majority of what happens in between planned, I just have no talent for graphics. I also believe, it'll be easier for me to find people willing to help me once I have 2-3 demos out showcasing different parts of the game, and I can show them drawings by a friend showing them what I'm looking for in each zone or for each character.
So, what does everyone think? Is it smarter to look early into development, or should I wait it out. What are the potential risks you can see with this thought process? What would you do?
