Hello,

I'd like to post my game on other sites so as to get more exposure, but I'm not sure which sites would be best.

I don't actually know about any game dev sites other than this one, and I only found RPGMakerWeb because it was linked on the official RPG Maker site. This is the only forum I've ever joined (I was never super-big into the whole social websites thing), so I'm totally ignorant of any non-forum places that may exist. Basically, I know nothing. :)

Where does everyone post their games, and where would you say you receive the most exposure?

Thank you! :)

@MechScapeZH For the most exposure, I'd say try to find a YouTuber, Twitch streamer, or Mixer streamer with a decent level of viewership who will play your game. If you want feedback on how you're doing, there's a site called Roast My Game that will give you critical feedback from other developers. If you want to put it out for free or priced download with donation options, itch.io is one place to look. If you want to go up on Steam, they require a Store page be active two weeks before you can release your game so that it spends some time in the Upcoming cue to garner interest from Steam buyers who watch that list. You can use social media such as Facebook to create a page for your brand and/or your game itself. IndieBoost is another site that helps plug you in with streamers. The question with Facebook pages and IndieBoost is...how much are you willing to pay to "boost" your visibility, and how well, if you try that route, does it work? I have yet to "take the plunge" with either although I have accounts set up with both. There's also a site called Giant Bomb that apparently has some viewership, so setting up a presence there doesn't hurt. The main thing is, keep looking into options and subscribe to different sources for information. Excellent sources for developer information about exposure how to's and more can be found by following content from Extra Credits, Ask Game Dev, GDC, Kotaku, Gamasutra, and more. There's a wealth out there. Hope it helps!

Thank you!

Roast My Game looks cool... Just looking at the games on the front page, it seems like feedback is given quickly there, but people don't write very detailed comments. Looks like a double-edged sword, at least on first glance.

I didn't know about itch.io. I see there are some RPG Maker games on there... Since it's free, I guess I'll use it. There's so many games, though- will mine get found?

As for Steam- I looked at that, but I don't think I'm there yet. ...My game isn't that good.

I can't use IndieBoost, since I... have no money. :guffaw:

Facebook- no. I don't like the way it's run, and I don't want to "compromise my principals" for the sake of a signal boost (obviously I'm exaggerating a bit, but I hear awful things about their security & getting data stolen, and I don't want to take that chance).

I looked up Giant Bomb, but that seems to be a review site, not a game-sharing site- is there something I'm missing?

I looked up Extra Credits, and I found a Youtube channel- is that correct?

Thank you so much for your help!

Here is the list
  • rpgmaker.net
  • itch.io
  • several discord servers, specifically RPG Maker Portal server (link in Yanfly's website)
  • media social (twitter/facebook/etc)

Obviously, you need to actively promote your game elsewhere. So you can't just put the game there and call it a day. Then you don't get exposure.

Thank you! I'll definitely be looking into rpgmaker.net as well.

There's a fair amount of really bad RM games on Steam, so I wouldn't consider that a barrier to entry. You mentioned not having money though, and that might be a bit more of an issue since you have to pay an up-front fee to host your game there. ($100 I think?)

Well, when I say "not good enough yet," I mostly mean it's not finished- when it is, I'd definitely say it's Steam-worthy.

The $100 fee will keep me from getting there though, yeah. I would like to say I'd be able to pay it by the time my game is finished.

I believe you get the $100 refunded if you meet a certain sales threshold or something.

I'll second RMN. I've been a member of that site for over a decade now. It's definitely the best place to host your RPG Maker game and find other games too. It is THE PLACE for RPG Maker games and if you make something good, people will definitely notice it.

I'd also like to mention that if you're looking to get notoriety or looking for more people to play your games, entering contests and game jams is a great way for that to happen. It can also help you in making games when you're locked down for a certain theme or timeframe and help you figure out your workflow and maybe even get people interested in your games.

Ah, I didn't know that.

RMN is definitely on my list- I'll release my next demo there.

Game Jams require a significant time commitment, though... Wouldn't that time be better spent working on my project? Obviously, I've never done one before, but that's just what comes to my mind.

Our latest feature is an interview with... me?!

People4_2 (Capelet off and on) added!

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
Can someone recommend some fun story-heavy RPGs to me? Coming up with good gameplay is a nightmare! I was thinking of making some gameplay platforming-based, but that doesn't work well in RPG form*. I also was thinking of removing battles, but that would be too much like OneShot. I don't even know how to make good puzzles!
one bad plugin combo later and one of my followers is moonwalking off the screen on his own... I didn't even more yet on the new map lol.
