I am using the Linux version of RPG Maker MV downloaded through Steam, and for whatever reason, the playtester will not open. It does not open and get stuck on a black or white screen, instead, nothing happens at all when I playtest, I press the button, and no window opens. I know for a fact that my input is registered, because I can make changes and it will ask me if I want to save them before playtesting, so it must be somewhere around opening the game it goes wrong.

Can you start and play the game/project with the index.html?

Others have found that verifying files solves this issue, so that could be worth a try. Close MV, go to your Steam Library, right-click RPG Maker MV > Properties > Local Files > Verify Integrity of Application Files.

I tried, but I got an error message saying "Failed to load: data/Actors.json" despite the fact that the Actors.json file does exist in my data folder.

I tried verifying twice, first time I got the message "1 file failed to validate and will be reacquired." and the second time it said "All files successfully validated." however, the playtester didn't work after either time (and neither did index.html).

"failed to load xy" means that either your project is damaged (this will happen if the content of the file is no longer correct and can't be loaded) or the filepath to the project is not legal under networking rules.
If this happens with a new project as well then it's most likely the filepath, can you check that for illegal letters and symbols?
Or post the complete path (from root to the filename) here if you need help checking it

Created an entirely new project and got the same error, so it's not the project itself that's the issue.
I opened the folder in terminal to check what they have named the path to the project folder, and found it to be:
home/invenblocker/Documents/Games/Playtesttest
Playtesttest being the name of the temporary project.

strange - that does not contain problems.
can you play to the error message again, then open the console window while the error is displayed and post a screenshot of that? It contains the full error data and might help with finding the cause.

I tried changing what application I opened the HTML file with from Chrome to Firefox and the unable to load file error disappeared. Still doesn't solve the built in playtester not working, but at least I can playtest in browser now.
But just in case it turns out to be relevant, here's the console and the error message when I open in Chrome:

no, I just forgot that third cause for the failed to load - it is a security setting in chrome that always causes this problem.
and yes, it looks as if the problem is in the system/program instead of in the project, so I'll have to get out - I don't have Linux and can't really help into that. You'll have to wait until one of the linux users reads this and can help.

I can run the index.html but my Play Test button does nothing. I am going to use this as a workaround for now.

Back in action to develop the indie game that has been long overdue... Final Fallacy. A game that keeps on giving! The development never ends as the developer thinks to be the smart cookie by coming back and beginning by saying... "Oh bother, this indie game has been long overdue..." How could one resist such?
