Well, I just played Pokemon Fire Red a bit, it's basically the remake of Pokemon Red. Nothing new in here, actually. lol.

(I just played around and did a little bit grinding). Because it's quite dull, I would go for Pokemon Emerald then, and I'll tell you my honest opinion regarding the game. =)

FireRed was the enhanced remake of Yellow actually, so it got some plot differences than Pokemon Red :p

Just tried Pokemon Emerald. It's better than Fire Red IMO... But, is it just me or the gym leader is pretty strong?

By the way, I'm using a mod that allows you to catch everything...

I didn't think the first few gym leaders were that hard, but then again, it may depend on the starter you picked.

The 7th gym is the one you may want to look out for, you're going to end up there under leveled.

To this day, I have never played a pokemon game, which is unusual because I've been a JRPG fan since  the 80s. When I was in grades 1-7, and Is aid I liked RPGs, my peers would always say "RP-what?". Nobody knew what rpgs effing were. Then in grade 8 or 9 or something, suddenly everyone was playing on a gameboy in school, and I'd look casually and see something that looked alot like an rpg, and then I'd ask what they were playing, and they all said pokemon.

At about the same time people were also fooling around with these non-gameboy electronic devices called "tamogachi" or something, basically watch things with virtual pets they had to feed and take care of and stuff. I didn't understand the appeal. But at the time I thought pokemon and these things were linked, as the same obvious fad. By the time I realized pokemon was its own thing, I also learned that it was getting its own tv series and everything, so I learned even if it might not be the same fad, it was a fad.

However unlike fads, it never really died out. So NOW I treat it like something I really should try, though I never had the time to do so.

THAT said, I've heard that the touhou fangame of the GBA fire/emerald/I forget what it is (there's only one for touhou though) pokemon gba game is excellent though. Maybe you should try that if you aren't against fangames and/or anti-touhou.

The first few for me weren't that hard - could be because I always grind a lot :p - but then again it was challenging. What was hard for me is the 5th gym and the 7th gym.

I usually hold off from all the hacks/cheats/mods until I have beaten the game once, because you know, for a gamer like me it takes all the fun out of the game when you use cheats. The only occasions that I use them are for the times when I cannot catch some Pokemon through normal means.

LOL. I remember the times when I used to have a "tamogachi" too. How time flies. Never really knew the name of those things back then.

You should really try out any Pokemon games. I have been playing them since the very first gen.

What I don't get is why people like Touhou that much. I mean, it's just a very simple shooting like Blazing Star from arcades' primetime (with some anime girls who shoot beams at you, I guess). Mind you, I'm a big fan of arcade games and anime alike. Still, why do people go crazy for something like that?

EDIT: @Matombo: Just saw your post. It was the remake of Yellow in the senses of gameplay and mechanic. FireRed/LeafGreen has a lot of mechanic that doesn't exist in the original game but was included in the Pokemon Yellow. While the games don't directly re-use Yellow storyline, it has plot-differences than the original Red/Green/Blue nevertheless.

On a side note: I seriously love those Team Rocket's duo (I guess it's a trio since you need to count Meowth in there as well :p , just saying) as a kid.

The base Touhou games are decent shmups in their own right...What makes people crazy for it is the music is very well composed. Even if you don't like how it sounds in-game due to instrumentation (like those trumpets or something), you can most likely find a fan-band that uses a style more to your liking playing the songs, and you'll probably appreciate them more.

Frankly though, I think some of the fan-games are extremely well done, in particular are RPGs genius of sappheiros, and labyrinth of Touhou. Honestly they are 2 of the very best I've played (in terms of gameplay, challenge, but being fair, etc). They aren't good cuz it's Touhou, they're just good. BEING Touhou though I suppose lets developers have a very large cast of characters to work with that people already identify with, and do not have to waste time/resources developing those assets for themselves, and can focus on the rest of the games themselves...At least, that's why I want to make a touhou fangame rpg. Not because I like Touhou more than anything else, but because I don't know anything else where I have a large cast to use that I don't have to invent on my own, that I'm legally allowed to use, even commercially if I so please.

I've played the Emerald version of Touhoumon before, and it  was a pretty fun Rom hack.

Look around and see how many people PLAYED touhou before. It's mostly about the large cast of characters, timeline, and music. It spans of the several fan animes, thousands of fan manga, hundreds of fangames... and fangames of fangames.

But this isn't a touhou topic... great, now I feel like starting one, be right back.

@Ghaleon: Hmm, yeah. I have heard the reason people like Touhou was because of their music before. Personally, although I have tried a one, I haven't played a lot of Touhou games yet, but I have to say their music was not my cup of tea. Maybe I'll try searching for one of those fan-band like you suggest.

I did a little wiki search after reading your post and I have to say I'm impressed by the amount of Touhou fan-games that exist. I'mma take a note of your suggestions. Are those by any chance made by RPG Maker, and are those available in English?

But let's not stray too far from the main topic we're talking about here.

I unfortunately ended up skipping gen 3. I had developed a very unhealthy obsession with Pokemon at the time, so my parents cut me off. I started playing again during gen 4, but I've only recently got around to playing Emerald.

Back when I was still playing GBA and stuffs, I didn't even consider Pokemon to be an RPG lol. I mean, I used to played other RPGs like Final Fantasy, Shining Souls and some other games, I knew them as RPGs, but Pokemon appeared to me as a whole different genre on its own =P

I liked Pokemon Red and Pokemon Yellow (Pika!) and then I moved to Fire Red and Emerald. They're great!

Gold was too easy but nice too when you fight Red in Mt. Silver.

...I have the fondest pokemon memories in GBA < :D

I think I managed to beat the gym leader (the fighting styled-pokemon)... i am overleveled now and I have Kadabra on my side. I flat-lined him lol.  :)

My only problem is : I've been introduced by so many new pokemon(s), and sometimes I use a wrong pokemon against them. :)

The road to become a Pokemon Champion is long and hard... unless you use this site! On the other hand, though, unless you want to become a master on Pokemon, don't click on the link, or else you will turned out to be overloaded with tons of features with no time to play at all. They say "Ignorance is bliss".

Back in action to develop the indie game that has been long overdue... Final Fallacy. A game that keeps on giving! The development never ends as the developer thinks to be the smart cookie by coming back and beginning by saying... "Oh bother, this indie game has been long overdue..." How could one resist such?
