So I've been working on a cave-like dungeon w/ the FSM Rocky Caverns tileset (which are beautiful btw). Now I have 4 monsters that I've been contemplating to put into this dungeon, but in order to save these sprites for other locations in the game, I'm only allowing myself to put 2 out of these 4 into this dungeon. My question is: which 2 of these 4 would be most fitting for the FSM Rocky Caverns tileset? It's a rather damp dungeon as well, maybe something to consider. Also, keep in mind this will be a lowbie dungeon.

Here are the choice of monsters: (2 of these are free assets on this forum, & the other 2 are purchased from RM store)
Ant
1604680992161.png
Worm
1604681027640.png
Slime
1604681116634.png
Bat
1604681211560.png

Keep in mind these can be hue-shifted to better match the tileset if necessary. Oh and, if anyone can think of better-fitting monsters w/ similar art styles, I'd love to check them out.

Edit: I thought it'd be better if I show the monsters on the map for a better comparison...

i would say all off them, but with restrictions where they can move..and where they come from..also at which time that happens.
(about vote: i had to chose 2 so i took slime and bat)
for example if there is a large bridge where the player needs to pass the water..
- Ant move only on normal ground
- Worm move only on normal ground
- Slime move only in water
- Bat fly over both ..

->also you could use spawn points that the slimes spawn out of the water in certain moments..
->the worms and ants could spawn out of wall holes at certain moments..
-> the bats could be there by default to engage the player

=> if you want to make things really complicated to setup ,you could also add a skill(maybe even an AOE skill) that allows the Player to push ants or worms into the water where they die instant.. this skill should be only availleble If the enemys are close to the water.
(but i got no idea how to make sure the player gets exp in such case)

Hmm, those actually sound doable! I already have push/pull mechanics implemented, as well as spawning from specific locations at certain times.

If I use all 4, I worry I won't have enough sprites to spare for the rest of the game lol. I wish TOKIWA would release more character sprites...:kaoangry:

Well when i think about it.. make only worms get out of holes, while ants come from the top of Walls

also in such case ants should be able to walk over walls aswell..
A spider would fit in aswell even if you need to take other kind of sprites for that, but the ants look a little bit like spiders anyway

Edit
on the shown spider..
-yes i use the same in my own project (not the demos)

I would say all of them, too.

Limited sprites is definitely a problem for on-map encounters. One solution lots of people use is to have the on-screen representation be more symbolic (aka not have the battler match), but it's definitely nicer to have unique ones for every battler.

I mean, one could make a case for each of the monsters to show up in a cave. Personally, I think ants and bats would be the best fit.

I'd say bats and slimes would be the more naturally logical choise based on the cave and its eco system but all of them could be there.

Ants I would expect in a more sand/desert set cave.

Exactly, there's another FSM tileset that's a lot more "brown" and dirt-themed (aka FSM: Soil-Ridden Cave tileset). I think the insect would fit better there.

So I think I'm gonna offer 2 different slimes for the cave in my screenshot. I've recolored one like so:
1604722772704.png1604722812491.png
The blue one will heal or lifesteal, while the purple one will poison you. Now, I do want to include the bat, but it's color pallet is quite jarring against the color of the dungeon in general. I've tried hue-shifting this guy, but I can't seem to find a good color...help?

I say worm and slime. I feel like those are the enemies you'd find in a wet cave. Bats, maybe but worm and slime seems to go together and if you're limiting yourself to open these enemies up for later use, the bat and ant can easily be used other places.

Yea, I was thinking the same thing. Worms definitely love humidity. Btw, this is the other cave tileset I was talking about:

I think the spiders and bats would fit better here perhaps?

I definitely think bats and spiders fit here better than the first cave.

So here's the finalized enemy roster for the 1st cave: (edit: I scaled up Oozling's size by 50%)
1604722772704.png
1604722812491.png
1604730497270.png1604729132915.png

Couldn't come up w/ any original names for these guys though, I just called them:
Teal Slime (life steals)
Violet Slime (poisons)
Oozling (can heal once)
Cave Worm (paralyzes)

Lol, I hope that doesn't seem too overpowered for an intro dungeon. I like a challenge. :p
I welcome any suggestions.:kaothx:

I'm trying to think of a good boss for this dungeon though...

Edit: Dungeon #2's roster... (large spider = boss?)<-could have minions too
1604729716387.png1604729639704.png1604729664369.png1604729727518.png1604729736454.png

Edit2: Should I scale up the other sprites by 50% too? So far all 3 slimes and the red/yellow bat are scaled up, while the worm, smaller spider, large spider, and brown bat aren't scaled.

Leech Goo/ Leech slime
Posionous Goo

Might be better, might not be lol

Edit: as for a boss how about a very large slime combines of multiple slimes? (not the most original but hey)

time index 10:02 ish.... he talks about monster distribution.
I left a comment there, about a year ago, stating the rule of the riddle of the shepherd and the river: a shepherd with a sheep, a wolf and a roll of grass has to go past a river, but he can't carry more than one item at a time.... you can't leave the wolf with the sheep, and you can't leave the sheep with the grass.... how do you move all three past the river?
same rule here: you can't leave antagonist monsters in the same room (or, dungeon, period) because they'd eat one another.

for a cave dungeon, I'd say most definitely spiders, or bats.
but if there's any significant treasure to be kept there, then goblins or even undead would be fitting.
and, the undead should most definitely be *spartoi*: skeleton soldiers, with armor, who died on the job of protecting said treasure.... as opposed to ghouls, ghosts, or random skeletons with no name.

I do also have this sprite: (like a Royal Slime or something)

Wasn't sure if I should use this guy as that dungeon's boss or save this sprite for another dungeon.

Edit2: Regarding the names, maybe...
  • Oozling
  • Leech Ooze
  • Toxic Ooze
or...
  • Gooling? <- lol my brain sucks rn
  • Leech Goo
  • Toxic Goo

What... No rats? :p
Lol, I have Rats in the Basement!:mrsatan:

Yes, I recolored them brown. Here it is if anyone wants it (so it matches the RTP img). Apologies for the awkwards spacing (I use 96x96).

Acid Ooze

if you resize it and give one of the 2 Sizes a crown , you can call them

Acid Oozling
&
Acid Oozking

also mini changes with neon colors ( yellow , blue ,pink) can make both kind of Units look different but still toxic

Looks like a solid rocky cave. Not crumbling brown dirt and soil.
Ants and worms are diggers, so normally they are eliminated...

Especially ants, because they move in community and make tunnels. And I see no tunnels.

Your worm looks covered in carapace and has legs like a centipede, so they actually fit. Just don't call it worm.

Slime can be whatever type they want. It's a fantasy creature anyway.

Bats fits well.

Hmm, what shall I name this wormy non-worm thing? "Centipede" sounds just as boring as "Worm" lol. Gawd I suck at names...

Edit: So I made a hue-shift and was wondering which looks better, original, or hue-shifted?
(for that specific dungeon anyway)

Our latest feature is an interview with... me?!

People4_2 (Capelet off and on) added!

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
Can someone recommend some fun story-heavy RPGs to me? Coming up with good gameplay is a nightmare! I was thinking of making some gameplay platforming-based, but that doesn't work well in RPG form*. I also was thinking of removing battles, but that would be too much like OneShot. I don't even know how to make good puzzles!
one bad plugin combo later and one of my followers is moonwalking off the screen on his own... I didn't even more yet on the new map lol.
