Possu's Resources

Okay, so I'm new to the forums (I've been a spectator for a long while, but I guess I never posted anything) and I'm pretty new to RPG maker too (well, I've had it for two years or so, but I've just been learning). Now I figured out what kept me from being inspired! I'm an artist in real life, focusing on realistic pet portraits and stuff, and something about not having my own art in the game bothered me... But I always thought it would be too time-consuming to create the art. And now I've found Pyxel Edit, and I just love it <3! I've done digital art before, but never pixel stuff and Pyxel Edit really made the difference for me. It's easy enough to use and do tiling and stuff. So I bought the program and gave it a go!

I will be posting my results for you guys to see (and possible use, if you want to)! I will be updating this thread with new resources as I work on them. Feel more than free to request things to add on tilesets etc. I'm more than happy to get some ideas and get the creative juices going! Right now I'm focusing making a whole tileset initially to be used in my own games (and will be free and available for you guys too!). I like the RPG genre and medieval stuff so it will be more like these things and not scifi or modern. Just to clarify this, so don't suggest something completely out of the concept.

I'd also love to hear any feedback on my art, but keep in mind, that even though I'm an artist, this is really the first time ever I'm creating pixel art. Don't expect me to be a master or a genius right from the start! I'm learning, I'm updating, I'm working on it!

//You are allowed to use my resources freely on both uncommercial and commercial games. I paint everything by my own hand right from the start if not otherwise mentioned. I'd love to see what you do with my resources, I really really appreciate if you toss me a copy of your game!//

Some resources I might abandon

These were some stuff I tried before I found Pyxel Edit. Some of them I like, some of them I don't - so I might abandon them from the actual tileset I'll be using. Figured out somebody might still like them!
Here is example map:

Sorry for the empty space, meant to make more there, but decided I might start all over :)

I'm a fan of Pyxel Edit too!  May I suggest, since Pyxel Edit isn't so great for trying to do an anti-aliased look (for obvious reasons) you might want to make tiles that match one of the pixelated sets instead of trying to get your stuff to work with Ace's RTP?  It'll probably be a lot easier.

Hey, my name is Michael and I'm designing a game: 'Purgatory's Shadow'. It's ok if you don't want to be part of a team or anything quite yet because we are in early stages of writing. Your stuff looks great and I was wondering if you would be able to create stuff for a steam punk game. Please get back to me as soon as you can as I would love to get you on the team!

Hope to see you soon,

Michael

P.S. I recommend using Game Character Hub for editing sprites and tile-sets. It's simple once you get used to it and it's really helped me out. It's made by the same people as RPG Maker so it is completely compaible and it only costs around £15.

MaikeruKeay, please do not hijack threads to recruit people to your team. We have a recruitment section for a reason.

//Now I've worked on snow, sand and cobblestone road too! Added some trees, not sure if I want to go so dark, so might do them all over again... But they kinda look nice with the new cobblestone//

Thank you everyone for the comments! Really appreciated!

I think there are certain limitations when working on a tileset rather than parallex mapping tiles. Some tiles are probably going to look like tiles (if I want to keep my "style"), but I'm ready to accept that, since the limited customization (can't have unlimited versions of the same tile).

I'm not sure if I understood everything you wrote. RTP is a strange term for me. (And anti-aliasing doesn't really translate well to my native language either XD). But yeah, I'm going for my own tileset from the beginning to end as I really really want to do that! This is why I'm not just making add-ons to one of the preset tiles but rather making everything from the scratch. I like the challenge :D .

Hi Michael, and sorry, I'm probably the wrong person for your project as I'm not very familiar with steam punk! I might do steam punk tiles in the future once I've practiced enough, but what I need to do right now is practice, and I'm trying to stay within things that are more familiar to me to avoid complete failure! I do hope you find someone more skilled in the kind of tiles you are looking for and of course feel free to use any of my tiles if some of them fit with your theme and game! I'll be looking forward to see your game when it is finished though, maybe I'll even learn something :p !

I'm sorry, I'll try to clarify some of what I said.  RTP is an acronym meaning Run Time Package.  It's the assets (music, sound effects, art) that come with RPG Maker.  Anti-aliasing is the way to make things look smooth on computers even though it's all made of square pixels.  It can be hand done and is done automatically when you draw with a brush tool instead of a pencil tool in an art program.  If you do a google search for images with the term "anti-alias" it shows a lot of nice visual examples.  The RTP for Ace is not pixel art, it was created with a lot of anti-aliasing, so pixel art clashes with it when the two styles of tiles are put in the same map.

Pyxel Edit has some minor blending options but is not made for creating anti-aliased artwork, it's made for pixel art.  Your artwork has a very high color count, like you are trying to get a anti-aliased look and not a pixel art look, but you've still got places with very hard pixel edges.  Normally I would dislike the blending of such dissimilar drawing styles, but you've managed to make it look good anyway.  It'll be unusable until you have that full set because it is such an unusual style that won't look right with any existing style.

It's good to know that you're dedicated, and it looks like you've added a lot more.  I look forward to seeing it when it's a full set!

These are a great beginning.  I look forward to seeing what else you produce.

Thank you so much for the explanations, they really made the difference! Now I understand what you are and were talking about! And yes indeed, I mean this be kind of stand-alone thing (though if someone wants to use just some part and thinks it suits their project, I'm perfectly okay and happy with that too), because I don't want to copy so much someone else's style, but rather create my own. Of course it's a long journey, since I'm just beginning and I don't have much experience. So finding the style I like might take some time. I like how the A2 tiles look at the moment, but the trees might be a bit dark for example. At the moment I'm experimenting.

These are a great beginning.  I look forward to seeing what else you produce.

Thank you for the comment!

Update with different kind of trees that are a lot lighter. Which ones you think are best (I would of course make overlapping trees for the lighter ones too)?

Hmm, not liking the newer trees as much, they're too cartoony for my taste.  You could raise the brightness of the other trees instead of making brighter ones from scratch.  If you don't have a program that'll do that I can do it easily enough.

*Facepalm*

Such an obvious solution, and easy fix with photoshop... I adjusted brightness, midtones, shadows and stuff a bit, and now they look a lot better! Will be updating them very soon (for some reason, it made the overlapping stuff different from the single trees, so I have to do overlaps again).

UPDATE! I made water and walls. Now, let me cure my headache... Ugh, water was not easy. You don't want to know how many times I tried before I decided to go pretty simplistic.

so hopefully tomorrow i get to go home from the hospital i've been here for 5 days already and it's driving me mad. I miss my family like crazy but at least I get to use my own toiletries and my own clothes. My mom is coming to visit soon i can't wait to see her cause i miss her the most. :kaojoy:
Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
