I am new at modifying tiles. I want to make a scene where modern day towns get destroyed but i don't want to use a bunch of separate tile sets. It would bother me to not have consistency with my tiles. So i was wondering what i would have to do to take the tile set i'm going to be using and make a modified set to look like the town has been destroyed? What program would i use? How would i go about it? Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. :)

If you stick with good quality RTP edits you will probably be happy.

They are out there.

Changing the fog over the map is great, and lighting effects are also important.

For example, PandaMaru has wall ruins.

RMMV
They're edits of the original tiles that came with the maker.

Basically it's taking the resources available in the RTP and modifying it to your needs. I recently posted a "fantasy ruins" set that was nothing more than editing the RTP. Edits can be simple, like a recolor, or complicated like mine. Copy and pasting Moss into wood and stone, recoloring, resizing, etc.

So, I found this poking around the forums. It is a tutorial by Indrah for editing tiles. Guide to Simple Tileset Edits.

I prefer to use GIMP for editing, only because I'm too poor for Adobe Photoshop, and quite frankly there is nothing Adobe can do that I haven't been able to do with GIMP.

If you have any specific questions about editing, feel free to PM me.

Thank you so much for the responses. I am decently proficient with gimp and i was probably going to use that program anyway.

so hopefully tomorrow i get to go home from the hospital i've been here for 5 days already and it's driving me mad. I miss my family like crazy but at least I get to use my own toiletries and my own clothes. My mom is coming to visit soon i can't wait to see her cause i miss her the most. :kaojoy:
Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
