So I’m thinking of eventually adding a post game challenge / event island which is a combination of the Gold Saucer from FF7 and the Battle Frontier from Pokemon to extend the length of the game and add more to do. The island will have mini games like Gold Saucer and various battle facilities with different and unique battle systems, with points to exchange for prizes. All the battle systems and mini games will be original obviously, nothing used from either game.

I havent seen many RPG Maker games with these additional challenges post game, so what are your thoughts on it?

Mini games in RPGs tend to have rewards that make the main focus of the game - the core gameplay - more fun or easier.  If all your post-game content are just minigames, then there won't be much point to them.  You should add more quests and bosses to give the player reason to play your mini-games.

Well each battle facility will have a boss, but I'm not sure how that would fit into a mini-game. Both will reward points and / or money to exchange for prizes such as better equipment, new abilities and such.

Battle Frontier works because it allows you to further test and train your pokemons and "prove" that they're strong... because that's mainly the point of playing pokemon, breeding/training pokemons and try to be "the best"...

now if you're gonna add a post-game mini-game island, just for the sake of having mini-games to prolong playing, I don't see a difference whether you add it right at the start or as a post-game... post-game might even mean that players won't even play it since it's purely mini-games...

Both will reward points and / or money to exchange for prizes such as better equipment, new abilities and such.
and for what will I use those better equipments, abilities etc???

I agree with Engr. Shana, you should add the Minigame Island during the course of the game, not in the post-game. The player will also be more encouraged to explore it as the rewards they can get will benefit them on their main quest.

You can even add more difficulty levels suited for later stages in the game, or expand the facilities as you progress, so the player can revisit the place and still get a challenge and rewards :)

Thanks for the ideas. I might have it accessible mid-game, but with added challenges, facilities and difficulty post-game. I don't know, maybe I'm just a sucker for post-game content. I love how well Pokemon does this by opening up new routes, challenges, events and such which keep me hooked way past initial completion.

@Engr. Shana, in terms of new equipment post-game, most of it will be earned before you officially complete the battle facilities as you earn it along the way, perhaps with a final few rewards upon completion that can be utilised against secret bosses that will be really challenging. So ultimately, the equipment and spells will be used for extremely hard challenges post-game.

You also gotta make sure that it fits your storyline/storybackground... Just don't make the mistake of adding something just for the sake of adding it...

I like secret Post-Game areas that have new places to explore. Like the hidden areas in the Megaman Battle Network series. You can't access them until you beat the game and they add more to the story and gameplay. Your idea of an Arena and a place for Mini-games sounds fun, but I don't think it should be considered post-game content.

actually gold saucer in FFVII is fun because we can access it 'during' the game instead of post game content. it give people some escape time when they're bored continuing main story. also perfect for people that love grinding since you can get some powerful item by 'grinding' on the mini games.

Personally, I'd make the post-game area accessible right before the end, not during the post-game. The post-game content works in Pokemon simply because it is Pokemon. Almost nobody plays Pokemon for the story, just to make their mons the very best, like no one ever was.

The only post game content that I considered great in Pokemon was in Gold, Silver and Crystal where you could re-explore Kanto and see some of the changes made after Red became the champion of Kanto. I was not impressed with the places to explore in X & Y, let alone there were only a few pieces of post-game content after beating the Elite Four.

I suppose it depends on the game. Sometimes it works out properly, other times it doesn't. Although, it's rare to see post-game content done wrong (excluding DLC for some games).

Unless we're talking a bonus dungeon(and even then, in such cases you should have a new game feature), have you side quests much ealier in the game, because what's the point in getting all these great items from the side quests, if the game is virtually over.

Right. Unless the player likes to collect every piece of gear in the game, there's not much motivation to get the gear once the game's completed.

There's a reason why I normally don't have 100% on games that have post-game items, I don't feel like I need to play it anymore after the end part of the main game... anything after that is just for trophy anyways... so really, only people who play for trophies/achievements/self-fulfillment would do that...

and I think a lot of people don't have the luxury of time to do that, especially given the amount of games that are being released...

Just to be clear, no FF games has post end content.

It has end-game content that can be done prior to completing the game.

This makes sense, since the special stuff can usually be used to defeat the last boss, or to discover additional story content.

FF7 has several story related scenes that can only be seen by backtracking for instance, and defeating the weapons, getting gold chocobo etc, all serves to power your characters.

Non of this can be done after defeating the last boss though, since the game ends at that point.

While post game content can be fun, if you can go back and explore the world to see what happened as a result of your actions, it's pointless if it's only for additional items, since that could just as well be added as end-game content, rather than post-game content.
