Princess Rescue! is a light-hearted mini RPG. I started working on it in 2012, rebooted it a couple of months later, and then had a looong break from it. but now I'm ready to finish it off! hopefully this time I actually complete the thing :)

It is shortly after the Princess's seventeenth birthday, and her world is about to be rocked by tragic news. Her fiance, a prince she was promised to ten years ago, has vanished. His room empty, but for a bizarre frost coating every surface. Her parents, and the parents-in-law-to-be beg her to use her Goddess-given powers as a seventh daughter of a seventh daughter to track down and, if necessary, rescue him. But of course, they don't send her out alone!

So the Princess, her Knight Commander, and perhaps one or two other oddballs they pick up along the way, are off to search the four corners of her future kingdom. Will they find him? Will they break into a lot of houses along the way in order to loot the hardworking peasants of the land?

I guess you'll have to play Princess Rescue! to find out.

MAIN CHARACTERS
Sarah (default name, can be changed)

The young princess, charged to rescue her prince.

Has a lot of emotions.

Victoria

the Knight Commander of Sarah's army. She's fast and deadly with

any sword she cares to wield, and a little cagey about her age.

Cian

An elven scholar with a penchant for destructive magic.

He loves researching old magic, and inventing new spells.

Quinn

A bright-eyed merchant with a unique moral compass.

Asha

A person of High Importance and Mysterious Age.

  • sidequests! never get bored again
  • a weapon/skill system similar to Final Fantasy: Tactics Advance. unlock new classes as you master the skills attached to each weapon
  • awesome custom face sprites for the main characters. who doesn't love visual emotions?
  • visible monsters! no more random encounters
  • a quest log, and a monster log. keep track of what's happened so far in-game!
  • optional party members, each with their own unique class and sidequest
  • party members chat to each other as you wander around

  • font on this page is Casual Tossed from AJ Palmer
  • in-game font is Go Boom! by Miguel Rios
  • customised face sprites by tumblr user fairymascot
  • Quest Journal + Monster Log systems by modernalgebra
  • AP + Weapon Skill system by fomar0153
  • Viewed Battle system by Jet
  • Event window + class system + event chase + Gab window by Yanfly
  • a million battle things by Yanfly

  • maps: ~95% (I'm thinking about adding more locations for the side character quests)
  • database: 50% (mostly need to do enemies, and finish the classes)
  • events: 90% (some sidequests, and neatening up some cutscenes here and there)
  • music: ~90% (need to set up music for the final area, and any side character areas I end up making)
  • graphics: ~95% (keep finding things I want to update/recolour)

a final note: if this game looks familiar, it's because when I was last working on it, I made a thread on this very forum! but after all this time, it's been archived, so I'm making a fresh one :)

I finally updated the OP with some newer screenshots! go have a look :) Isabel has a new outfit, and you get a sneak peek at some important characters!

other progress: I realised the other day that one of the dungeons was totally in the wrong area, so I've spent a few days reorganising the map, and adding/moving a few areas, which has been pretty fun!

I've also been working on planning out the optional party members, and now you can get them all on your team (although you can't actually do their quests yet, and most of them don't have skills or weapons yet).

I'm thinking about adding a minigame, maybe this rock paper scissors game? it might be fun to be able to play a minigame in some of the towns, plus I could make it so one of the cool weapons is a prize for getting a good streak, or something? I dunno!

next up on my list: finish rearranging the map (atm you can't get to the last town, oops!), finish setting up regular encounters in the dungeons, and finish up the final area (I need two boss fights, plus maybe two cutscenes). then I should be able to play the whole thing, start to finish!! so exciting :D then I can start neatening up stuff: finishing side quests, making sure all the areas have fun random dialogue, adding in the optional character areas, etc.

getting close, anyway!! to finish off the post, here is one of the latest cutscenes I've been setting up:

The story seems nice. :)

I also love that you put side quest, visual emotions, and party chat. It makes the game more enthusiastic and worth playing. :guffaw:

I'll try it once there is a demo release :D

thanks!! I worked pretty hard to make it a lively game, so I'm glad that comes through :)

There probably won't be a demo release, I'm honestly pretty close to just being entirely done, so I'll probably just post it when it's finished. But yay, I'm glad at least one person on here will play it, haha

some updates!

you can now battle the final boss and the pre-final boss (spoiler alert :v), and I'm fixing up the rest of the enemies as well. still having some trouble making the final cutscene as DRAMATIC as it should be, so I'm mostly just poking around the other areas, adding little bits of map here and there, and fixing up map connections.

also: I renamed every main character except Victoria, as well as re-designed a couple of them a tiny bit. I decided, since I had four fairly distinct "races/species" (tails + long ears, wings + long ears, pointy ears, and human), I might as do a little wordbuilding and give them diverse names to go along with it. so that's a thing.

a question for anyone reading: I'm debating whether or not to post face pics of the four optional party members. on one hand, it'd be cool for you guys to meet them. but on the other: I kind of love the idea of a player wandering around chatting to all the npcs and suddenly discovering one of them wants to join the team. like, that'd be pretty cool! what do you guys think?

Perhaps put them in a separate spoiler tag, so that anyone who wants to see them has the option to do so.

yeah, that's a good idea! I'll probably do that :) also I guess even if you know what their faces look like, you don't necessarily know where you'll meet them, or what they'll be up to.

first post updated with the faces and names of the four optional party members! I don't want to give you guys any spoilers about their quests, so instead of personality blurbs you can just have their database nicknames. I feel like that should get their ~vibe~ across without spoiling things :)

progress notes: I finished the final cutscene, and added in a smaller sort-of quest near the start of the game to tie it all together. now I just have to do all the boring database things x__x and like, fix up shops and chests and balance enemies and stuff. yawn! but at least it's coming together :)

it's been a little while since I last updated! but don't worry, I've been working hard~

progress notes: a whole lot of boring database things are complete! I moved a handful of skills, states and weapons from an older version of this project into the current one (the mismatch of game data was one of the reasons I gave up on this a while ago, I think), and finally finished working out one of the character's class progression. I set up all the armour and accessories, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, all of the enemies!

I still need to finish working out the rest of the hundred skills and weapons, and fill the shops and chests with them. I mapped the exterior of one of the four optional areas, but I still need to do the interior, and the whole of the other three. not to mention!! actually event up those quests, and the rest of the sidequests. (five of which don't even slightly exist yet;; gotta get my brainstorm on!)

after that...it's mostly graphic tweaking, and making sure there aren't any bugs in systems. (I have a feeling there might be one in my job system, sigh)

after all that text, you guys deserve something visual. so here's a recent screenshot of a new area:

It's hard to catch my attention recently, but this game looks interesting enough for my tastes.

All I want to say is: Good luck with it! I'm looking forward to play it.

I'm a huge sucker for the whole reverse damsel in distress theme, so I'm looking forward to checking this out~ Not a huge fan of the font you've picked, but that could just be me. It's readable! So-- at least there's no trouble there lol

Anyway, from what's shown here, Sarah looks like she's going to be a fun character :> Good luck with the rest of the game!

thx for the kind words guys, I hope you like it when you play it :)

re: the font. it's a lighthearted game, so...I wanted a lighthearted font. I'm not entirely sold on it, but it's cute enough (and most importantly, readable enough!!) for now. I might have another look at fonts when I'm pretty much done, but for now this is what I'm going with

& yeah, reverse damsel in distress is totally my jam. it was the very first idea I had for an RPG, & I ran with it haha. even the name is part of the reversal (by sounding conventional)

Yeah, I clicked on the thread name thinking 'oh great, save a princess' and was delighted to see--no this is a princess rescuing, not being rescued. The title is clever! Simple, easy to remember, and smart. *thumbs up*

Picking a font can be very hard :S For me it's too decorative to be a text box font, but that's something to take with a grain of salt haha Probably best to wait and hear what other people think of it; I like notoriously boring fonts a lot of the time.

it's been forever since I last posted, & I've been working hard!! so here, have an update:

sidequests: I invented a whole bunch more, planned them all out, and have now implemented all but three of them!

graphics: I changed all the characters to DS style....and then promptly changed them all back. that was not fun. I also merged a couple of cute window styles and added that in

script stuff: played around with the menu a whole bunch, so that it only displays pertinent info, which was fun and not too hard. thennnn the boy had a cool idea for battles, and I'm still trying to implement that. I mean...it works?? but also the info screen vanishes for a bit, so. uh, it also doesn't work.

that's...basically it, lmao. I spent a week on holiday in melbourne with the boyfriend, so that's definitely taken a whole bunch of time away from PR!, but hopefully I can wrap it up pretty soon! I'm excited to move onto a different (hopefully less linear! maybe a rune factory-style game?) project, haha.

so hopefully tomorrow i get to go home from the hospital i've been here for 5 days already and it's driving me mad. I miss my family like crazy but at least I get to use my own toiletries and my own clothes. My mom is coming to visit soon i can't wait to see her cause i miss her the most. :kaojoy:
Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
