I downloaded the free version of CreateInstall and followed the steps in Amanda's guide on the Commercial RPG Maker Discussion forum. But when I'm ready to build the setup, it doesn't work. I click on the "Build Setup" button and nothing happens. I select it from the drop-down list, same effect (or lack thereof). In fact, the same thing (nothing) happens when I click "Run" and "Save" or "Save As". It's like the buttons/commands are broken, or something.

Things get even weirder when I attempt to close the program. It asks if I would like to save my project (which I can't), and I click yes. Then the window goes away as if nothing happened (ideally it should save the project and CLOSE THE PROGRAM, right?). I can repeat this infinitely; the program will not save or build anything.

Any idea what's wrong...?

something prevents the save-function from working.

Most likely culprits are either

1) you're trying to save into a restricted folder (if using win7 or win8)

2) CreateInstall is damaged (try reinstalling)

3) Windows-functions are blocked or damaged

Okay, the problem was that I was including a colon in the project name. Fixed that, but NOW I have another problem.

So as I said, I followed all the steps in Amanda's guide, but after I install my game, the desktop/start menu shortcuts don't work. I click on them and Windows searches for the game EXE and can't find it (I have another copy on my computer and it instead finds that and asks if I want to redirect the shortcut to it). I have no freaking clue why this is happening...

EDIT: Hate to be a pain, but one more thing. In Amanda's guide, she mentions creating a variable called "Play Game Checkbox" so that the user will have the option to run the game upon installation. When I tried to do this, I got an error as the installer was being compiled, that said it didn't recognize the word "Play". I changed the word to lower-case (also omitting "Game Checkbox," unsure if that was necessary however) and the installer was able to be compiled, but it didn't give me the option to run the game upon installation. There was no checkbox either, if that's what's supposed to happen. I haven't yet tried adding back the other two words, though (if that will somehow do something, I have no idea)...

It might be that the guide was written with an earlier version of the createinstall software, and that the newer version works slightly different.

So you need to check the new versions helpfile to learn how to do that now.

Okay, I figured it all out, thanks for the help. I guess this can be closed now?

What was the problem?
Initial save/build errors: I was using a colon in the project name, which is a big no-no.

Shortcuts: I had to add the shortcut directories/target files each in their own "Shortcut - Create" sections, not just list them in "Shortcuts - List".

Play Game Checkbox: In Dialog - Finish, under Checkboxes, I added a variable (one of the default, "ischeck") as the text "Play Now" and chose it as the condition for "Run Application". In Amanda's guide, she says to add within "Set Variables," "Play Game Checkbox" with a value of 1 and set that as the condition for Run Application, but that didn't work for me.

Not that I demean the guide or anything, I wouldn't know where the heck to start without it! :D

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
