Hello dear Sir/Lady!

I am really desperate and need to know wether what I have than can be undone somehow. I was working on a rather big project for already ~20 hours worktime. Problems arose when a friend of mine wanted to look through it (we both aren't RPGMaker experts) and I searched for it on my hard drive. My search was not successful at all so I thought maybe if I close the project it would appear, after all my other ones were there as well.

But when I did that, not only did I not find the project at all but I couldn't seem to open it. The version that RPGMaker VX Ace always tried to open was one from the very beginning with barely anything being done with them.

I always saved and even closed the RPG Maker a couple of times in between, so it is bound to have been saved at some point (at least that's what I think). My question ultimately is, is there any way to restore my project? Considering I can only work on it in my free time, 20 hours are extremely much.

Thanks in advance and any help/tips are appreaciated,

Yes, you only need to find out where you saved it to and open it in that folder.

What you currently have is most probably a combination of two quirks: Ace always remembers the last path used and only that, so when you tried to open a project elsewhere it forgot where you saved your current project.

Additionally (and especially on the steam cloud) the project name is the name used for opening. If you made a backup and didn't rename the project, then only one of those projects will be listed under that name in "manage projects".

Search your computer for "game.rvproj2" with windows search - that will list all the Ace Projects on your computer. Then try to open those manually (from inside the editor, with open file - not by doubleclicking) until you found the correct one.

Thank you for your fast answer,

but I have already tried that (among other things)

I came to the conclusion that it is gone for good due to complications with a synchronisations folder. Real shame about my project, but I will just head back to the drawing board and start anew. I didn't like some of the maps I had created anyway :)

Have a nice day

the only way a synchronity problem could exist is if you're using the steam version of Ace and have enabled cloud storage for that project.

If that is the case, then indeed a failed sync can cause steam cloud to think that it needs to "update" your project with an older version, and in that case it is really gone.

If you have such synchronity problems or failures on your internet connection, then it would be best to remove the cloud features to prevent a repeat.

To do that, you not only need to disable the cloud in the steam program properties, you also need to remove your project manually from the cloud in the manage project window (which only exists on steam ace, not on standalone ace, because it is for handling steam cloud and steam workshop)
