So, this is serving as a distraction from me crunching on the game so I should attempt to keep it quick.
Alright, so, that title is temporary so don't freak out this isn't another of those games. This is something unique.
It begins with murder. And a celebrity interview. A wild west town in the future, living under self-imposed apartheid and laws of the old. A murder, an entire family killed in a deadly explosion. Being the only detective who has ever run out of ink you're sent down to this town to figure out what caused this murder. And boy do you never find out because that's only the first act.
The only real other story thing I can give out are some companion summaries, so enjoy and tell me what you think: (They're all temporary names by the way, and they all come from a first draft of a story so they're subject to change.)
Companion #1 - The Fallen King
A man with everything the common spirit fights to wish for. Wearing glorious medals of five attempted suicides and two trips to rehab, this king's fame has him kept in an eternal throttling.
Companion #2 - The Political Antagonist
A woman who extrudes power from every word she speaks. Fighting her way up the political ladder, fighting corruption, for the first in what feels like forever, life was fair to her: A hard, yet safe life paying off with an entire nation under her control. Except when things went wrong, it wasn't because she changed, she just finally saw the true devil that guards the white gates of progress. Now she battles in a war against Emotion itself, with even her entire nation now trying to kill her the only warmth she has left is Logic.
Companion #3 - The Faceless Backstabber
An unknown. It's not human, but it knows our patterns, even those we don't see. The only thing you can be certain of is that it loves to change its entire purpose based off what's popular in the area it inhabits. In a split second this being can become everyone's best friend, and your worst enemy.
In terms of gameplay I aim for the game to be very laid back, you can explore the area and partake in each area's cultures and secrets. As a Detective you must gather evidence and gather evidence so long as things stay fairly close to reality, afterwards, well, I like to think a good story isn't afraid of breaking the laws of reality.
Development Status
Alright, I've been working on the game for about 4 days now and while I've got nothing in-game I'm currently crunching on a Vertical Slice. That is most of Act 1's critical path and gameplay playable, this is due on October 19th, it won't be released publicly. From the vertical slice I'm going to look at getting some source of funding or publishing in so I can hire a very small team to help with the things I cannot do alone.
That being said, if someone with a scripting ability has a few spare days I'd really appreciate some help. While I can do some basic scripting there is a huge amount of content that needs to be written & designed, problem is I've got a few complex gameplay systems that also need to be done. These outstretch my capabilities and while I could take the time to learn the intricacies of RGSS3, I simply don't have time. I aim to finish this game, and in order to make that happen I have to abide by some fairly strict due dates.
If you're interested in joining please PM me ASAP, here is an overview of what to expect:
UI Programming
A rather-specific ID system to organize unique strings of text, numbers and "sequences"
A complex gameplay system designed to merge cinematic and gameplay, making the player the action hero
An evidence based interrogation system
A dynamic freeform interrogation system
You will be provided with a design document and a Visio drawing of a brief overview of how the system should work and what processes it has to undertake. After the vertical slice is complete, you are not expected to work any further and any further work will be paid.
Alright, I gotta get back to crunch mode, also, sorry for the roughness of this post, I think the crunch is getting to my head. If you find something wrong/disagreeable or you just didn't get something just ask and I'll answer, as long as it doesn't spoil anything.
Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
Can someone recommend some fun story-heavy RPGs to me? Coming up with good gameplay is a nightmare! I was thinking of making some gameplay platforming-based, but that doesn't work well in RPG form*. I also was thinking of removing battles, but that would be too much like OneShot. I don't even know how to make good puzzles!
