Hi, here's some comments about the choices I voted for :

About the ABS, I would like to bring to your attention regarding Falcao's Pearl ABS Liquid v3. (Maybe you already know about it)
I have not used SASIV or Pearl v3 extensively, so I don't know which may be better suited.

Predefined characters may make for better storytelling, but having the 'silent protagonist' type characters may make it easier for a large group of people to create their own side story and quests.

Open world side-quests & non-linear structure- great for a project like this and also largely underused these days.

Books/scrolls/etc.

- to shine a light on the history and current affairs without launching into 30 minutes long cutscenes.
- help to flesh out the story & world for those who want to know more.

Elder scrolls-like skill improvement

- it'll be nice if it can implemented although some might find it a put off.
- interesting to see stats grow & improve when used for x times rather stay stagnant. and end up having 3-5 of that 'Ice' magic of which you're ever going to use only one, while scrolling through a lot of skills just to reach that one.

Weather system

- maybe they can be isolated to certain areas. Snow in cold areas, rain in jungles, sandstorms in deserts.

Relationship/Crafting

- cool if it came be implemented. It'll be difficult but rewarding.

Conversation choices

- if possible, especially if the protagonist(s) doesn't speak.

- If you're going to have a skill system, maybe things like 'Persuade' 'Charisma' can affect what choices you have.

Sleeping

- yeah everyone needs to sleep, especially in a world as big as this one.

Bards?! And dancers too! Make it a gypsy camp or festival!

Here's an update.
Lately I've been trying to add things like an Action Battle System (Falcao Pearl ABS Liquid), which might actually become obsolete if people want a turn-based game instead. Even so, Falcao works like a gem.

You can bash things in using "F".
You can assign different skills to different keys.
You can slash aside bushes like Zelda.
It works best in single-player.
Fighting is breezy.
I think this will work with our project really well. But in the end, it's up to the public, right?

Crafting is super-fun!
I also happened to put an awesome Falcao MMORPG Alchemy and Extraction System where you use your Gather skill to harvest items (with a chance of success/failure) and combine them using recipes you find or buy.
This can probably be implemented whether or not we use ABS.

Let there be books.
I implemented a script XS - History Book so now we have readable books in game. Things like skins and stuff are subject to change, to make them look more... papery.

Well, CarshmereCat, they are in-between, like they have about the same votes, right now it's 9-9, and yes, the ABS is refreshing, something new, and definitely fits in this open-world scene, I have no idea why they are choosing turn-based battle system, as it doesn't fit in this open-world scene at all, because that means constantly going to battle screens with a lot of enemies since, it's an open-world, right? that means a lot of enemies, so I don't get it why they're doing that, lol, I think turn-based is over-used already also, and non-fitting to finish. The reason they could have it's that they're used to it, but it does not fit here, and I'd tell them to get something new :) . Nice crafting system, really, crafting system are fun stuff because you build stuff and it's interactive and stuff, not just buying or selling items, but gathering materials and building it, it's just fun hehe, and fits in open-world scene also :) . Nice book system, it is good for open-world containing different writes from different towns and can contain easter eggs and stuff :)

(btw, can't like your post now because I got max likes per day done lol)

I have a suggestion!

How about everyone who wants to participate can create one NPC and one unique "Rare" monster?  Or, you could swap out the NPC for "Quest" of a current NPC, maybe?

I dunno, I'm just throwing ideas out there.  I kind of want to get to "Dungeon Design" and we hopefully already have a "room list" where we can apply to design certain rooms (like you could label some of them as puzzles, boss rooms, treasure rooms, etcetera).  I think that might be fun.

I think we'd need to have some idea of parameter ranges so all of the monsters are approximately equal in terms of difficulty.

Such as: ATK from 50 to 80, DEF from 5 to 20, etc.

Replies.
@M_Michael -- I appreciate your opinion. Regardless of whether we use ABS, the crafting system and the book system look like they're staying.

@The Prince of Sarcasm -- Thanks, working hard.

@Tai_MT -- As this event keeps going, we're going to have NPC creation and monster creation events. Quests will be related to characters that pop up now and then. As for dungeon design, that'll come after we have some idea of locations, and the general story and lore of the game. I'll talk about our tentative timeline later on. Your idea of assigning different types of rooms for different people to pick up is a good one, though.

@whitesphere -- I think users could specify the general strengths and weaknesses of a monster and then people who are good at balancing can balance it out for them. I'll scope out the landscape to see which guys are good, and when the time comes, they can put up their hands as well, to volunteer for things like balancing and general development. I'm not the best at balancing, but I'd say I'm middling to competent ;)

You can download a trial version of the ABS if you want.
Disclaimer: This is not the finalized version, by any means. If anything, we may end up using turn-based combat (Yanfly Engine) instead, but this is a little taste of what it might be like if we use the Falcao ABS. It also contains one plant that you can gather, 3 fireball enemies, and a whole lot of weapons.

Controls

  • Arrow Keys = Move
  • "F" = Attack
  • "Z" = Interact
  • "Q/W" = Toggle Weapon (Bows don't work because I haven't given the main char arrows yet but you can if you want)

Changelog v1.02b:

  • Included Yami Patch System (system to include patches so you don't have to download everything)
  • Trialling Falcao Pearl ABS
  • Implemented crafting system (only gathering is included as of this version)
  • Implemented book system (just use the "Test Book" item in your inventory)
  • Included basic quest system (quest not complete-able yet)

Celebratory Prizegiving!
It's that time!

The "World Map" section of Project RMW World has been completed, and "Colabria" (name pending) is now alive, all thanks to you. We have assembled a panel of 8 judges to rate each of the maps, and decide on an overall winner. These judges will be introduced later, as well as the results of the winners of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd placing badges!

Unfortunately, we have not completed the process for acquiring the badges, however Archeia has confirmed that we will have badges as soon as possible. Please thank her if you get the chance!

But first, the poll voting has closed, and the following has been decided by you! Let's go through each of the options and explains how it affects the collaborative game.

The 4/11/2014 Poll Results & Evaluation

28 members cast their vote, on three questions that were posed for a week-long period. They dictate how the rest of the game will be directed. The following are the results of the poll, and how the results will affect how the game eventuates.

Analysis:
This means that we will be using a turn-based engine such as Yanfly, or another engine that is widely available to foster turn-based gameplay. Since I am not that good at balancing turn-based combat, I'll need to find someone who is good at that. If you are, then please volunteer, if you feel like you can take the workload. Project RMW World will work under a week-by-week iterative basis with preset goals/agendas, and seeing how we met those goals/agendas each week. PM if interested.

Analysis:
This means that we will work with the 1 open-slate character initially, unless the story calls for 2-4 pre-defined characters, which I believe many turn-based RPGs do. Again, we can brainstorm this kind of stuff when it comes to the gameplay and concept sections.

Options to Include?
The third question contained many different options that you could choose from, resulting in a few popular options, the top 6 stated here from most to least popular:
  • Skill tree (buy skills using skill points) (18 votes)
  • Open-world sidequest structure (17 votes)
  • Books that you can open and read in-game (17 votes)
  • Crafting items (17 votes)
  • Weather system (16 votes)
  • Conversation choices (15 votes)
This question turned out to be not that conclusive, since many of these options won't work that well together, and they will probably turn up organically in the discussion of the game anyway. Regardless, it was a fun little poll to have and at least we can agree we don't want random encounters.

Let's get to the map contest!
Now we are up to the most exciting portion of the night - who won the badges for top maps. The judging process is as follows: each judge was selected to rate all 100 maps on a scale of 1-10. These were then averaged, using a formula that tries to equalize each judge's influence, and ranked from highest to lowest. The badges will be given to 1 unique person each, for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, because it turns out that one person won all three prizes because they had all the best maps :/ Good luck guessing who that was!

First of all, I'm looking forward to the next stages of this project. The mapping quilt was a lot of fun and a good practice as I'd never mapped with Ace before :p
It seems it was both close calls on the battle system and the PCs, at the moment they are a bit contradicting, but I'm sure we'll be able to deal with it just fine. :)

Thank you jury members, I hope you had fun judging :)

And now a big congratulations to Paladin!  She did most of the work and that in itself deserved recognition, so it was no surprise to me when she won. Congratulations to Cronus and Loke as well for their lovely maps.

Laslty, thank you Cashmere for starting and managing this project. It's hard work and we really appreciate it.

PS: You're showing the top 20, not 25 ;)

Wow, congratulations, all! I admit to being surprised at my #14 spot as I only submitted one map, but hooray! Taking part was a lot of fun ;D

Everyone should check out Paladin-Cleric of Awesome's shop as her sample maps there are gorgeous. I also must give a shout-out to the judges for going through a whopping 100 maps, and to our Triple-C-ashmere for organising all this epicness.

Did I catch that you're looking for interior mappers? I want in...

Edit: whoa! Winners for mapping? Awesome! Nice work. I really like this Quilt, and think its an awesome idea. Is this to be the whole game world? Is the map available for public consumption?

Dude! I won! Wow! I won the top three places. That was not expected. lol. I assume the judges had no idea which maps belonged to who.

To be fair, there were a lot of maps on the board that I feel were more interesting and creative than mine, so that makes me really honoured to have won. Congrats to everyone who took part (and sorry I stole too many of the map slots).

I'm looking forward to some fun with interiors now! Yay!
